Yankees president Randy Levine slams Barbara Kopple’s ESPN documentary on George Steinbrenner

Always fun to pull out Lonn Trost quotes for no reason…“I practically lived in old Yankee Stadium,” he says. “That’s why, when the architect said, ‘We’re going to move right field in a foot,’ I said, ‘Oh, no, you’re not.’ “To Yankee fans, those distances are sacred.”

Sounding very much like his old boss, Yankees president Randy Levine Wednesday fired verbal shots at an upcoming ESPN documentary on George Steinbrenner, calling it “disjointed” and “the usual news at 6.”

“It was very disappointing to watch the film. She had unbelievable access to the Yankees. She had great access to Hal (Steinbrenner). The interview with him was exceptional,” Levine said. “The rest of the film was the usual news at 6. It was a disjointed effort. I’m not sure where she was trying to go with the story.

“As somebody who is an admirer of hers, I just think she swung and missed at this one.”

...Kopple said after Levine watched it (“We showed it to him out of the good graces of our heart”) he “didn’t stay and talk very long,” but did ask why he wasn’t in it. Neither Levine nor GM Brian Cashman appears in “The House of Steinbrenner.” Kopple said she wanted to include both in the documentary.

“We sent emails asking for Mr. Cashman and Mr. Levine,” Kopple said. “They just said no.”

Levine differed, saying: “She’s a filmmaker and she’s entitled to decide who she wants in the film. She never communicated that she wanted to interview me or many other relevant people at the Yankees.”

"Those" distances are not sacred. THESE are.

"Newsdolan" columnist Ken Davidoff had a blog on Tuesday about seeing this film. He says it's not very good. Even casual Yankee fans won't find out much they haven't already known. The only good parts are films of old Yankee stadium being torn down and an interview with the increasingly reclusive Hal Steinbrenner.

Randy Levine has the skin of a spring roll. I'm surprised everything in the world doesn't outrage him.

I thought Hank was the increasingly reclusive one. Is there a competition to reach Howard Hughes crazy first?

Hank actually had a period in the late 1980s when he was seen with the Yankees. He had some decent ideas about "lets see what our kids can do instead of trading them" But apparently after being ridiculed by players as a rich man's fat kid, he withdrew to let various brothers in law such as Malloy and Swindal run things. But when those guys marriages to the Steinbrenner females (who must be comparable to General Burkhalter's sister) failed, Hank had a period when he bloviated about everything. But catching the flak again, both for being a big mouth and for correctly saying Joe Torre was a loser until his father gave him a job, Hank crept back into whatever he does (real estate?). No doubt that like Dracula, Hank be very public for awhile around 2025.

Davidoff's words are "some exclusive interviews with Hal Steinbrenner, who has grown only more reclusive as he continues to run the Yankeees." I was a bit surprised he used that phrase but since he covers baseball, he would know more about how often Hal is seen/talks with the media.

A ruler rap across the knuckles to you, you bold and brazen article, for insulting the actress who also played "The Penguin" in the Blues Brothers. I loved how Burkhalter pronounced, "Gerrr-truuude"

Jessica is somewhat bovine, but Jennifer wasn't half-bad in her younger days.

Horses.
