Yankees Release Juan Rivera

Finally, something goes right!

The Yankees released first baseman/outfielder Juan Rivera, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports...

The Yankees added Vernon Wells and Lyle Overbay this week.  Wells, Overbay, and Ben Francisco are making the team, Rivera was told, according to MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch and others.

So the Yankees' position players will be:

Catchers: Cervelli and Stewart
Infielders: Overbay, Cano, Nunez, Youkilis, Nix
Outfielders: Wells, Gardner, Suzuki, Francisco, Boesch
DH: Hafner

Looks right to me, Bruce. I'd imagine the lineup against RHP will be:

CF Gardner
RF Ichiro
2B Cano
3B Youkilis
DH Hafner
LF Wells
1B Overbay
SS Nuñez
C Stewart/Cervelli

Vs LHP I'd guess Youkilis plays a lot of first base with Nix stepping in at third. Francisco probably DHs.

Wait, this means the Yankees only have two good position players. The problems certainly add up.

Their pitchers should be good though.

Isn't Francisco a pretty decent defender? I'd expect to see Wells or Boesch DHing vs LHP, no?

It's Attack of the MLB Has-Beens! {with apologies to Youks natch}

The 2006 Yanks

Overbay 125 OPS+
Cano 126
Jeter 132
Youk 106
Wells 129
Ichiro 106
Granderson 98
ARod 132

OK, the 2007 Yanks are probably better overall ... Overbay and Wells stunk but ARod, Granderson, Youk and Ichiro were much better.

ESPN's headline on this right now is "Yanks cut Rivera."

For a split second they had me.
