Yankees release Preston Mattingly

He could always find solace at The House of David Parrish.

The New York Yankees have released Preston Mattingly, who agreed to a minor league contract in January.

The 24-year-old son of former Yankees star and current Los Angeles Dodgers manager Don Mattingly had been playing for Double-A Trenton in spring training games.

The Yankees confirmed the move on Tuesday.

Don Mattingly said Tuesday that he spoke to his son by telephone but didn’t ask whether he plans to try to continue a professional career in which he never has climbed above Class A.

“I didn’t feel like it was the time to ask,” Mattingly said.

Mattingly hit .232 with five doubles, five home runs and 19 RBIs in 53 games last year with Class A Great Lakes and Rancho Cucamonga.

Shave those sideburns, Mattingly! No, seriously, you might need to get a job as a barber now.

Don Mattingly named his child Preston? That seems weird to me. Not exactly a scrappy name.

Preston not exactly a scrappy kid. Non-Athletic, but doesn't do anything that is considered 'gritty' or 'scrappy'.

Still, 5 years from now, Preston will get 6% of the HoF vote.

Preston still has a chance to be the next Jeff Nettles.

Better than "Koby" or "Kody" or "Kory" or "Kozy" or "Kony" or "Gunner" or "Hunter" or "Tanner" or "Cutter".

Exactly. Sometimes letting the wife name the kid is a good idea. Otherwise, my son might have been named Clemente or Mario or Bettis or Ward or something like that.

Given the apparent grasp of the HOF voting rules by the people who do the voting, this would not surprise me in the least.

Mario or Ward would be okay. At least those are respectable names, unlike Braden and McKenzie.

Nope. Gunner is an awesome name.

It's an appalling misspelling of the badass Viking name "Gunnar". Even Ricky Nelson didn't manage to #### it up like Papelbon did.

Maybe he'll wind up on the Somerset Patriots. One of these years, Jeff Nettles has to retire.

In my (limited) personal experience it is the wife who is more likely to prefer some silly new-fangled while the husband lobbies for a more normal John, Michael, Brian, ect.
