Yankees send Freddy Garcia to bullpen

Let’s do the Freddy in. Chubby, checkered career nearing end?

As a group of reporters approached his locker, Freddy Garcia wasted no time.

“Bullpen,” he said.

Amid a difficult beginning to the season that left him 0-2 after four starts with a 12.51 ERA and a 16.5 hits per nine innings ratio, Garcia will take some time to work out his kinks as a reliever.

Eventually, his place in the rotation will be taken by Andy Pettitte, but in the meantime, manager Joe Girardi mentioned long man David Phelps as a possible fill-in.

“It’s like any of you guys, if you don’t do your job…do what you’re supposed to do, than this is what happens,” Garcia, obviously disappointed with the news, said. “I didn’t pitch the way I was expected to pitch.”

Hughes got off lucky there.

Bringing back the three-man rotation?

Anyway, I believe the correct answer is "should have kept Colon instead."

I was hoping for Mars, but the bullpen is a good first step.

My initial reaction is beware small sample sizes and old arms having poor starts in cold weather.

I haven't seen Garcia much this year, but if this is the beginning of the end for him (and my Yankee fan friends seem to think it's closer to the end of the end), it's been a pretty great ride. His comeback from a major injury deserves applause and I think he could still have a few serviceable months left in him in the right situation (Petco? Marlins park?)

Yes, but if you are where the Yankees are on the success cycle, how many starts do you give an ineffective guy? In four starts, his high is 5.2 innings, and in that game he gave up five runs.

Look at his games and try to find something positive to take away, and make the case for why he should be starting for a playoff contender.

Honestly, I see two run of the mill crappy starts to open the season and a pair of truly horrific starts in his last two outings. Does that deserve the pen on a contender? Yeah, probably, especially when there's something better waiting in the wings (Banuelos or Pettitte.)

However, generally, I'm still loathe to call it a career on Garcia, which was my point generally. If he did this for two months then, yes, I'd be ready to throw in the towel on him.

The really amazing thing is that the Yankees are 2-2 in his starts.

The same Banuelos who's on the minor league DL after starting off with 14 hits and 7 walks against 2 Ks in 5.1 innings? 2 strike outs of 36 batters faced with 21 of them reaching base. He's also walked around 5 per 9 innings since hitting AA. I wouldn't expect to see him starting for the Yankees just yet.

The same Banuelos who surrendered West Point to the hated British?

Unless the next guy is better, maybe you're not a contender.

One of those included tying an AL record for wild pitches. Nothing run of the mill about that!

Is it?

Garcia looked like he was working with smoke and mirrors last season but he did it well. This season the smoke has cleared and the mirrors don't seem so shiny. Not sure if time in the bullpen is going to help in this case, he just looks terrible.
