Yankees sign Burt Reynolds

Baseball Prospectus’ Kevin Goldstein Tweeted on Wednesday morning that New York has signed third baseman/outfielder Burt Reynolds, who played for the independent Newark Bears of the Can-Am Baseball Association in 2011.

Though not related to the iconic actor who played titular antagonist Bo Darville in 1977’s “Smokey and the Bandit,” Reynolds does have a strong baseball bloodline - he is the cousin of Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano.

If you want to be techincial, someone posting on Baseball Think Factory with the handle "Dangerous Dean" is a cousin to Robinson Cano. If you want to be really technical, the tree that Robinson Cano's bat is made out of was also his cousin.

Now playing 3rd base... Bo "Bandit" Darville.

I tried showing Smokey and the Bandit to a friend who was just 1 or 2 when the movie came out, and who has never been to the South. She didn't get it.

Was there an old Archer thread? I'll bet it was all babytown frolics. Though I still don't find it quite as funny as Frisky Dingo.

Sterling: Hey! I'm serious. Look at me, seriously, Lana. Forget the eye bandage, but the hair, the strong jawline—who do I remind you of?
Lana: Nobody.
Sterling: Say it. Say it. Say it!
Lana: Burt Reynolds in Deliverance.
Sterling: No! Not in Deliverance. In Gator! How can you not see that?

Robinson Cano is a teammate of Mariano Rivera. Rivera was on the team with Don Mattingly in 1995.

Mattingly was a teammate of Lou Pinella early in his career. Pinella played with Roy White.

White was a teammate of Dick Howser. Howser grew up with Burt Reynolds.
