Yanks acquire reliever Britton from Orioles

Dillon Tate, Cody Carroll, and Josh Rogers are human beings who throw baseballs and now play in the Orioles’ organization.

Seventeen years on this site and I've submitted an article for the first time.

Not a very exciting return, but what do you expect to get for two months of a relief pitcher, Gleyber Torres?

It's a great return. I'm surprised Carroll wasn't added to the ML bullpen, he's ready. Dillon Tate's downside is a good relief pitcher. I'd be happy to get this return if I were Baltimore, and I'm a little disappointed the Yankees had to offer that much for a rental with barely a dozen innings pitched this year.

Eh, if it effectively means the end of the Chasen Shreve Experience, I can live with it. Plus Britton's been pitching better lately and who the hell knows about Chapman's knee. Also, all three of the players traded are Rule 5 eligible after the season. Get something for something you might lose for free ...

Britton hasn't been BRITTON this year, but he's pretty good for a what, 5th-best Yankee reliever (Chapman, Betances, Green, Robertson)?

What happened to Tommy Kahnle? Is he hurt?

Excellent, this opens a spot in the Orioles bullpen for Chris Davis and his 0.00 career ERA.

It's a fair return, not a great return, for the Orioles. Carroll may be a decent reliever, but the Yankees have a dozen of those guys in the minors. Rogers is a 6th-8th starter at best and Tate, who highlights the package, is pitching pretty well in AA, but he's already 24. A guy with that stuff should also have more strikeouts.

It's a reasonable return, but the Yankees didn't give up anything of real value.

That has zero influence on the quality of the return for Baltimore. Dealing from a position of depth is good for both teams.

If Britton returns to anything like the form he used to have, this is a fine trade for the Yanks -- although I wouldn't consider this their main need (partially addressed with JA Happ of course). But Britton wasn't that good last year before hitting the DL (solid results, not so solid peripherals) and has been average or worse since returning. I assume statcast and similar are suggesting the velocity and movement are still there.

In Britton's last 9 games, he's thrown 9 shutout innings with only 3 hits. He maxed out at either 96 or 97 tonight, so the velocity's still there.

And what Britton now gives the Yankees is a high quality bullpen that's deep enough to take some of the pressure off a crew of starters who seldom seem to go past the 5th or 6th inning, as well as being deep enough to give the individual bullpen members themselves a bit more rest between appearances. Of course a lot depends on whether Happ can return to the form he had up until a month ago, and there's no way now to know that.
