Yasiel Puig apologizes for not running out comebacker: ‘That’s not going to happen again’

We’re used to seeing Yasiel Puig’s name in headlines for what he does on the base path, but Saturday night, it was what he didn’t do that’s noteworthy.

With one out in the bottom of the fourth inning, down 1-0 against the Minnesota Twins, the Cleveland Indians outfielder hit a first-pitch ground ball directly back to pitcher Jake Odorizzi.

Odorizzi started to run the ball to first, but about halfway there, realized he needn’t rush: Puig had yet to leave the batter’s box. In fact, he had already turned around and started back toward the dugout – it was confusing to both Odorizzi and fans in attendance alike (reports from the stadium say Puig was booed).

Could the people who turn molehills into mountains please contact me- I could use their services in my life outside this site….

Was there any chance Puig was going to be safe at first if he hustled down the line: NO

Was there any benefit to risking injury by sprinting towards first when there was no chance to be safe: NO

Do fans and sportscasters (and teammates) expect hitters to run out routine ground ball outs: YES

Against a division rival, in a crucial game, while trailing, Puig should run out that ball. His decision to turn and immediately walk back to the dugout became fodder for the Indians broadcast booth for the remainder of the inning. Santana had to talk to him about it in the dugout. Francona had to answer questions about it after the game. Who knows what the impact was on the rest of the Indians who still had a chance to win the ballgame at that point. It became an unnecessary distraction that could have been avoided.

In my mind those are important enough reasons to not do what Puig did.

??

The pitcher could have thrown the ball away or the 1B could have dropped it. That's why you run to first base in the first place.

False binary. He didn't run at all.

Right, and a simple run (not an all-out sprint) to keep the defense honest only minimally risks injury.

He didn't even have to run. If he'd just kind of shuffled in the right direction for a few steps and he was at least looking toward first, this wouldn't have been a story.

I was watching this game on the Twins broadcast and the color guy was absolutely spot on I thought. Here is what I noted in the omnichatter Saturday night;

Puig hits a one hopper back to the mound, takes one step to first then goes right to the dugout. Francona and Carlos Santana both have pretty tame conversations with him and he stays in the game.

Don’t know who the Twin announcer is (don’t think it was Blyleven) and he was very reasonable about it. Said effectively “look, you just gotta jog at 50% down the line in case the pitcher messes it up, we’ve all seen that. But Puig knows what he did wasn’t OK so the Indians just want to make sure it doesn’t become a big deal.”

He didn’t make a federal case out of it or get hysterical, he just noted that Puig needed to jog down the line. Francona said a few words to Puig as he came back in the dugout and then Carlos Santana put his arm around Puig (literally) and talked pretty much the rest of the half inning. I suspect that Puig apologized as soon as he came back to the dugout and Tito realized that Puig understood what he did wasn’t acceptable.

Narrator: It would definitely happen again.

if Puig loses his BBTF defense team - and they are mostly lacking here - he's lost everything.
