YES Network, Michael Kay extend relationship

Meaning “Ossified Roy” Bard still has a shot to make CenterStage!

The Emmy Award-winning Michael Kay, whose voice has been synonymous with the YES Network since its launch in 2002, has signed a multi-year extension with the network to remain its lead New York Yankees play-by-play voice. Kay has earned 19 Emmy nominations and 3 Emmy wins while at YES.

...“We are pleased that Michael will continue to be the voice of the Yankees on YES while also hosting our signature CenterStage interview show,” said John Filippelli, president of production and programming at the YES Network. “New Yorkers have long identified him with the Yankees and as a sports authority in general, and he is considered one of the best play-by-play men in baseball. His knowledge of the game and his ability to articulate in a clear, accurate and succinct manner make him an invaluable member of the YES team.”

“The Yankees are probably the signature franchise in all of sports, and to have the opportunity to continue to live a boyhood dream and be behind the mic in the first year of the new Yankee Stadium is humbling,” said Kay. “I could not be happier about being a part of the YES Network for the foreseeable future.”

Kay is a douche.

I think Kay has his issues, like when he tries to take over the color analysis. But I think he's a skilled play-by-play man, and I love his everyman story. He's emblematic of an American who works hard and rises to the top of his field relatively unassisted.

Despite the fact that he's too loud about his opinions, I think he's an asset on YES, and I'd have re-signed him too. I think he's well above replacement-level and is indeed well above average.

GODDAMMIT.

HE SUCKS.

He ruins my enjoyment of the games. I don't care how many 80-hour weeks or Hollywood uncles helped him get where he is. I wish he was somewhere else.

Of course Kay was always going to rise, with that massive, helium-filled skull of his.

Kay can be annoying, but in the world of RSN baseball announcers he's among the tallest midgets.

If anything, Kay is good at engaging his color guys. If the color guy is good (Jim Kaat was great, now the best is probably Al Leiter) then the broadcast is good. If they color guy is a dud, so's the broadcast. You could do a lot worse.

Michael Kay is easily one of the top-5 active play-by-play guys in baseball.

I am not a fan of Kay, but he has greatly improved over the last 3-4 years, in my opinion at least. Also, he is much, much better when either Leiter or O'Neill is in the booth with him, as they will call him out for saying something stupid. The result, to his credit, is that he says far fewer stupid things since the two of them started doing color commentary.

Mmm, sometimes. I used to count this as a positive trait, despite not liking him overall. But he tends to overdo it. He'll come up with any half-assed ######## to turn into a question for his partner -- "They've cut the grass in a new pattern today. Why is that, Kenny?"

In what way?

I have happily avoided hearing him for a few years now. Does he still do that pre-game shtick where he describes each team's uniform in excruciating detail? If so, I still wish him dead.
   17. Best Dressed Chicken in Town Posted: November 04, 2008 at 12:12 AM (#3002149)
No, he stopped that when he moved to TV.

Who's this shmuck got pics of? At one point, ESPN radio in NYC was promoting him as "the Voice of the Yankees". Disgusting.

Michael Kay makes me stabby.

I love the part saying his show won "'Best Regional Show or Series" (sports or otherwise) by the trade publication CableFAX Daily last week." That's like an award for best airport bathroom in NYC.

Ironically, this makes Kay the longest-tenured announcer in YES history.

Is there some feud between TBDCiT and CS that I don't know about? That sounded harsh.
