YESNetwork: Pedroia: Cano’s the MVP

Oh, I’m sorry…I was just polishing Robbie Cano’s MVP trophy.

While Pedroia can’t play baseball, he can talk baseball. Since Pedroia won the MVP two years ago for the Red Sox and has done a lot of watching lately, I wanted to know who he thinks has been the most valuable player in the American League. He responded in 1.2 seconds.

“It has to be Robbie, you would think,” Pedroia said. “Doesn’t it have to go to him?”

...As the other marquee Yankees have sputtered, Cano hasn’t experienced many droughts. He is hitting .318 with 28 homers and 105 runs batted in, robust numbers for a second baseman. Cano, who has also excelled defensively, had better numbers before the All-Star break (.336, 16, 58) than after the break (.295, 12, 47). But Pedroia lauded Cano for being a slick fielder and the most consistent hitter on a team that leads the Major Leagues in runs.

“He would get my vote for MVP,” Pedroia said. “I’d like to see another second baseman get it.”

...Besides Cano and Hamilton, Miguel Cabrera (.328, 38, 126) of the Tigers and Jose Bautista (.264, 52, 118) of the Blue Jays are also candidates for the MVP. When I mentioned those players to Pedroia, he said it would be difficult for them to win because their teams haven’t been contenders. Joe Mauer, who was the 2009 MVP for the Twins, has had a good, but not great season. He is batting .331 with nine homers and 74 RBIs.

The triple crown stats just called to say that the rumors of their death have been greatly exaggerated.

No, he's not.

My tinfoil hatted head was talking to me today and I still say Brian Roberts is the best (or at least the most valuable to his team) 2B in the AL East. Yankees without Cano? Fine. Red Sox without Pedroia, still perfectly servicable. Orioles without Brian Roberts? Disaster.

Well, Cano has been as good if not better than Pedroia was when he won the MVP, so I can understand why Pedroia thinks Cano deserves it.

If there is someone directly and easily comparable to me who is obviously better than me, that person must be the MVP.

Cabrera and Bautista would have a better case if the award was more like the Cy Young. Interpretation of "most valuable" varies, players on last place teams have won but that usually happens when they are far and above the best players on winning teams.

The Cy just wants you to vote for the best pitcher without the hazy interpretations of value, so the difference between Felix Hernandez going 1-1 with a 0.50 ERA in 18 innings his last two starts and getting rocked for 13 runs in 7 innings will be huge, although none of it matters in determining the AL playoff composition.

I can't make up my mind in the AL. Probably Hamilton if he wasn't out so long. Cano, Bautista, Longoria are probably the ones I'd have the highest.

My vote is for Tony Parker's wife(n). Canó belongs in the conversation, though I suspect the voters will give it to Josh Hamilton, in part because of his interesting personal story. My guess is that Adrian Beltre will not finish in the top 4, despite what WAR thinks:

by Fangraphs' WAR
Josh Hamilton 8.0
Jose Bautista 6.9
Adrian Beltre 6.9
Carl Crawford 6.8
Cliff Lee 6.6
Eva(n) Longoria 6.5
Robinson Canó 6.4
Miguel Cabrera 6.3

by b-ref's WAR
Eva(n) Longoria 7.6
Miguel Cabrera 7.0
Shin-Soo Choo* 6.9
Adrian Beltre 6.0
Josh Hamilton* 5.8
Jose Bautista 5.6
Robinson Canó* 5.5
Joe Mauer* 5.4
Justin Morneau* 5.2

I'm rooting for Mr. Cano to win the World Series MVP and I believe we'd both be satisfied with that less-prestigious honor.

Dioner Navarro says Francisco Cervelli is the MVP.

Even though it says "MOST VALUABLE PITCHER" right there on the freaking plaque. Go figure.

The biggest difference is that pitchers' value is much easier to determine. You look at the ERA and the innings pitched, and that'll generally answer the question for you 90 percent of the time. Position players have hazier interpretations of value because the value of position players is much hazier to determine.

Man, Mauer is hitting .331! When did that happen?

Hasn't that been changed to "Outstanding Pitcher"?

Whether he deserves it or not, I really hope Cano wins.

Reading this headline really made me smile, having nothing to do with Pedroia or Cano and everything to do with BTF.
