You Are Cordially Invited to SOFTBALL IN THE CITY

Permit application process has been started, with any luck we’ll be frolicking in the North Meadow of Central Park some sunny Saturday in July or August.* Attendance will be taken! Those not in attendance will be talked smack of!

Further details will be posted as they become available, or as I remember them. If you’re in contact with primates (or other beings) who don’t regularly visit the site, make sure to let ‘em know! They don’t need to be good, there are already enough of you who make me look bad.

RSVP before game time, whenever that turns out to be. Or just show up.

*Okay, I requested 11 - 2 on July 20, we’ll see what happens
**Per post #130 below, it’s Saturday, August 10, 11 - 2 on North Meadow field #4. I’ll try to keep the info up here up to date with the latest status. -vi

OMG, here we are. Everybody gather round and let's hear some chatter.

vi, can we get this pinned to the top of the page for a while, so the occasionalists (ie, those who only drop in occasionally, not the philosophers) see it?
   2. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: April 25, 2019 at 04:03 PM (#5835385)

Bummer, I can't make it that day -- have to be on Long Island that morning. Might be able to join for a beer after the game.
   3. Hysterical & Useless Posted: April 25, 2019 at 04:05 PM (#5835387)
That's the important part, Dave. The fewer actual witnesses to the "games," the better the stories are afterward.
   4. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: April 25, 2019 at 04:06 PM (#5835388)
Count me in. It's time to get back out there and hit some softball dingers and utterly misplay some popups.
   5. Hysterical & Useless Posted: April 25, 2019 at 04:38 PM (#5835410)
So, we're already up to 2 attendees! Awesome!
   6. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: April 25, 2019 at 04:40 PM (#5835412)
I should be able to make it.
   7. Dog on the sidewalk Posted: April 25, 2019 at 04:45 PM (#5835417)
I'm a "firm no" for 7/20, but if you were to change it to August, you could upgrade me to a "likely no."
   8. Hysterical & Useless Posted: April 25, 2019 at 04:47 PM (#5835420)
Alrighty, snapper! Yay.

BTW, according to HCO over in the Lounge, at the 2011 game you were sweating profusely. I defended you. If a man chooses to sweat, that is his prerogative, after all.

IIRC, it was about 95 that day, so, yeah, I'm going to sweat profusely in the sun.

We'll try to schedule a 2nd go-round so you can do the full miss.

02 and 03 very likely. 04 and 05 strongly possible
   14. catomi01 Posted: April 25, 2019 at 07:00 PM (#5835482)
along with catomi-clinchers, catomi-bats, and catomi-bases.
   15. Hysterical & Useless Posted: April 25, 2019 at 07:49 PM (#5835492)
Yowza! We might actually have to play softball.
   16. The Anthony Kennedy of BBTF (Scott) Posted: April 25, 2019 at 07:58 PM (#5835494)
I just want JE there so I can heckle him for being against two spaces after a period.
   17. Howie Menckel Posted: April 25, 2019 at 08:46 PM (#5835498)
I want to see JE go all Jim Bottomley one more time.

blew up my knee last week, which could impact by speed in going from 1st to 3rd (inside joke among those who have seen me 'run'.)

doc diagnosed it as "water on the knee" - a term I haven't heard in maybe 35 years. my nephew - about to start his residency at Stanford as he bids to become the nation's first-ever Irish-American doctor - never heard of the term (they call it "effusion" now).

think of it as the body's "airbag," no kidding.

I bought a used glove last year for reasons that escape me now. I do have a nephew or niece wedding again this fall for the third consecutive year (plenty more in reserve!), so that might encourage me to try a little conditioning against my "severe osteoarthritis" diagnosis that it getting difficult to ignore.
   18. Meatwad Posted: April 25, 2019 at 10:50 PM (#5835518)
I will not be there.
   19. The Yankee Clapper Posted: April 25, 2019 at 11:06 PM (#5835522)
Oops. Wrong thread.
   20. Shooty would run in but these bone spurs hurt! Posted: April 26, 2019 at 08:19 AM (#5835559)
I will be in London on July 20th so that would be a firm no for me for that date unless we move the game to Hyde Park (which I would totally be all for). Any day in June, early and late July and all but the last week in August would be a firm yes.
   21. villageidiom Posted: April 26, 2019 at 08:26 AM (#5835562)
That's the last full day of summer camp for my Scout troop.

But! I'm not going to summer camp with my troop this year.

But! I'm up at 3 AM the next day to go to the World Scout Jamboree for 2 weeks.

Realistically I think I need to be a "no" for this, but I'll say maybe because I've already missed 2 of the last 3 years.

vi, can we get this pinned to the top of the page for a while, so the occasionalists (ie, those who only drop in occasionally, not the philosophers) see it?
Done.
   22. villageidiom Posted: April 26, 2019 at 08:40 AM (#5835564)
Site to check on availability. Nothing booked yet specifically for 11-2 that day. Heckscher fields are booked all day. Great Lawn 1, 3, 7, and 8 are open in that slot. North Meadow 4, 5, and 10 are open as well.
   23. Blastin Posted: April 26, 2019 at 09:41 AM (#5835575)
I wrote it down on the calendar. My puppy is having surgery sometime in July, so it might depend on that.

If he's healthy (or it hasn't happened yet), I might just bring him.
   24. villageidiom Posted: April 26, 2019 at 10:45 AM (#5835601)
If he's healthy (or it hasn't happened yet), I might just bring him.
You have to bring him. He's our starting shortstop.
   25. Hysterical & Useless Posted: April 26, 2019 at 12:02 PM (#5835623)
Thanks for pinning us, vi.

Maybe I'll look into an August date as well/or instead! Too many jumping in to say No!

Blastin, you actually have a calendar you **write** things on? Woulda thought it would just be all on the phone. Good luck with the puppy.

   26. Blastin Posted: April 26, 2019 at 12:10 PM (#5835627)
No, it's google. I "typed" it down.
   27. Hysterical & Useless Posted: April 26, 2019 at 12:44 PM (#5835638)
You've restored my faith in the younger generation.

What sort of disorder causes one to be for two spaces after a period? It's like reading David Letterman's teeth.
   29. Hysterical & Useless Posted: April 26, 2019 at 12:56 PM (#5835645)
Those of us who were born gat-toothed and have proudly remained so regard Letterman as the worst sort of traitor. We can grudgingly recognize the desire to get your teeth "fixed" (sic) in order to improve your professional prospects in the Show Business, but what sort of complex causes a wildly successful personality to submit to that sort of dental vandalism?
   30. Karl from NY Posted: April 26, 2019 at 02:17 PM (#5835682)
I'm a solid maybe. Might be traveling that weekend, but if not, very likely to be there.

And I've put two spaces after every single period for my entire life. Any less looks amateur and cramped and lazy.

   34. Hysterical & Useless Posted: April 26, 2019 at 07:10 PM (#5835747)

   37. Hysterical & Useless Posted: April 26, 2019 at 08:18 PM (#5835766)
Howie, I'll take that kind of smack from Edmundo, because he's even older than me. "Age before beauty" and all that. But kids like you need to show a little more respect.

Well, you don't need to. But it'd be nice.
   38. Howie Menckel Posted: April 26, 2019 at 08:59 PM (#5835774)
Heck, anybody who calls me a "kid" has my ultimate respect!

:)
   39. McCoy Posted: April 27, 2019 at 03:36 AM (#5835845)

At work, this was about 7 or 8 years ago, I was on the phone with one of the traders, clearing up some questions about one of his personal accounts, and I said, "Oh, you kids nowadays." He said, "I'm 49 years old!" I said, "I'm 59. You're a kid." He laughed.

IMPORTANT UPDATE:

Since some of our most beloved and influential Primates have chimed in and said "July 20th! Ooh! Icky! No way I'm coming then!!!" we're now feverishly preparing our grant proposal for funding an alternative request.

Saturday, August 10, 11 - 2.

Any of you kids know how to add this info to the heading at the top, either let me know how (I think I knew once, but that was in another country, and besides, the wench is dead) or go ahead and do it yourself.

I mean, take some ####### initiative!

ETA: that's not the eff word blocked out there; that's how you can tell I was just joking.

Let's schedule a second game in Chicago for the same day. It could be like Live Aid, and Phil Collins could play in both.

   47. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: April 27, 2019 at 08:15 PM (#5835959)
I can make it on August 10.
   48. Omineca Greg Posted: April 27, 2019 at 08:19 PM (#5835960)
August 10th I'll be in Prince Rupert. I'll show you a picture of where I'm staying...

That's my room, the red roofed spire.
   49. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: April 27, 2019 at 10:34 PM (#5835994)

   50. Hysterical & Useless Posted: April 28, 2019 at 07:45 AM (#5836027)
What number is it, snapper? Mine is on the 5th, the number is a bit larger than that, though.

OG, that looks fantastic. Do you get to go up in the cupola, or is that off-limits?

   51. Omineca Greg Posted: April 28, 2019 at 10:53 AM (#5836050)
Do you get to go up in the cupola, or is that off-limits?

Yeah, that's my room! It's for me! We're spending a couple of nights there before we catch the ferry to Haida Gwaii.

Prince Rupert is beautiful, but with one caveat. They call it the "City With A Hundred Sunny Days", but anyone who can do math will realise that leaves 265 days...where it's not sunny. In fact, it's very rainy. But, oh boy, you catch it on a sunny day, and it is really something to see. That building I'm staying in is out on pilings, it's a dock, very maritime.

There's a song about Prince Rupert, Canadians of a certain age will know this song, it was a pop hit here, but I imagine for Yanks it'll be new. When you live in a place with shitty weather, like Prince Rupert, or indeed, most of Canada, it changes your perspective on things. Trooper was a pretty typical 70s rock band, from Vancouver. They were out on tour in the rest of BC, and after playing a show in Rupert, they had a day off and chartered a fishing boat, for a little R & R (rest & relaxation, not rock & roll). They had a rare sunny Rupert day when out on the ocean, but the skipper of the boat had some advice for them...and they wrote a song about it...

A very good friend of mine
Told me something the other day
I'd like to pass it on to you
'Cause I believe what he said to be true

He said we're here for a good time
Not a long time (not a long time)
So have a good time
The sun can't shine every day

And the sun is shinin' in this rainy city
And the sun is shinin', ooh, isn't it a pity
And every year has its share of tears
And every now and then it's gotta rain

We're here for a good time
Not a long time
So have a good time
The sun can't shine every day

Freudenfest is only two hours from me. We should just go ahead and schedule a game for there. Freudenfest means "festival of fun" - how can you guys pass that up?

Bah! Don't give me any of this "fun" bullxxxx. We're MEN here. We do stuff cause it HURTS.

Which is a great excuse for drinking afterwards.

Thanks for updating the header, vi. But please update your post 58 to say "I'm DEFINITELY good with that date."

Well, what we do hardly qualifies as "sports" now, does it?

FWIW, I wouldn't bring my wife because I would hate to disillusion her. I've been fooling her for over 4 decades now, don't want to ruin that.
   65. villageidiom Posted: April 29, 2019 at 11:22 AM (#5836324)

Tell her she can serve as a judge at our game, like they have for figure skating or gymnastics.

On that note, I'm setting the over/under at 2 minutes 43 seconds into the first game for the first time she awards a 0.0.

I'll take the under on that. WAY under. I'm assuming she's not going to be blindfolded while we're all "warming up."

Who we got so far? This is for August 10 now:

1) Inge (Dave)
2) AJK (Scott)
3) snapper (DO NOT schedule your vacation over this, ya big lug)
4) catomi01 + perhaps 4
5) Howie, because we need to verify the latest injuries
6) Shooty (I know, you haven't bothered to check in, but we changed the date for you!)
7) Blastin (assuming he only does a half-marathon that morning)
8) Karl (yeah, "probably," but he's a regular so I'm counting him as in)
9) Charlie
10) Edmundo
11) villageidiom (none of this "might" crap, please)

At this rate we might be heading straight to the bar.

No, I didn't forget myself. Just not sure I want to be seen in this company.
   71. Howie Menckel Posted: April 29, 2019 at 06:06 PM (#5836496)
5) Howie, because we need to verify the latest injuries

latest is severe tendinitis, left wrist - which, fyi, is way worse than water on the knee. but you get more days of Naproxen for it.

first world injury: my remote control has been fading - so when I hit pause, FF, etc to the DVR, it doesn't always respond. so I pounded the buttons to the nub this weekend to enforce my orders anyway. this worked - until the next morning. guh

10-day IL, return to DVR field expected early May - with a new remote.

pro tip: being ambidextrous would make life a lot easier (I'm left-remote-d)

#facepalm

Shoulda refreshed! I'd texted Jason early this afternoon, just heard back from him. Huh. Guess I'm not on his list of "call back immediately!" people. Can't understand why.

At least SOMETHING is going right today!

snapper, thanks for contacting Jason and Ray. I emailed Brian (the tailor) and he says he's in too. Also emailed BDC but since we can't provide a dome I don't think he'll be making the trip. Have to check my gmail tonight (didn't think to add my work address), maybe he was planning on being in NY then anyway.

12) Jason
13) Ray
14) Brian

We're getting dangerously close to having enough people for 2 teams.

Sorry for being so lame. I feel terrible as an originator for missing the LAST TWO games.

I have to confirm the weekend, so right now I'm a maybe.

You know, even if you can't make it, Jules is always welcome. We need a decent photographer! And tell her, Howie promises some great action shots.

The colorful kind. The color being red.

Anybody have contact info for GregK, or Chicago Joe, or Obo, or any other of the Usual Suspects who haven't shown up yet?

Or unusual ones, Votto/Blotto (he came once!) and of course (dog help us all) Rickey!
   82. Stormy JE Posted: May 01, 2019 at 03:18 PM (#5837305)
Shoulda refreshed! I'd texted Jason early this afternoon, just heard back from him. Huh. Guess I'm not on his list of "call back immediately!" people. Can't understand why.
Because you're hysterical?
   83. Hysterical & Useless Posted: May 01, 2019 at 04:12 PM (#5837332)
I thought it was because you hadn't added me to your contacts when we had discussions re: the game 4 years ago so didn't recognize the number.

Now I find it was just wanton bigotry against the emotionally labile.

Good to know!

LOL. No, you were right the first time.

Okay, McCoy, when CAN you make it to NY?
Keep in mind that last year we accommodated his schedule and, despite being in Manhattan, elected not to drop by the bar and say hello...

I should be able to find them.

McCoy is a new father, I'm not sure why you go by his certainty of schedule.

He was IN TOWN, but the bar we went to was not classy enough for his wife. In his opinion. Don't know that she actually had a vote.

Then again, nobody else subjected their womenfolk to us either, so...
   88. Stormy JE Posted: May 01, 2019 at 05:01 PM (#5837357)
I just want JE there so I can heckle him for being against two spaces after a period.
Wait, I thought your kind were the ones in hiding.

EDIT: Key Food Lime Seltzer to Face.
   89. Stormy JE Posted: May 01, 2019 at 05:02 PM (#5837359)
I want to see JE go all Jim Bottomley one more time.
You want me to serve as player-manager?

Where'd you guys go?

I'll have to be a maybe yet again!

In theory I should be able to make it, but at this point I don't know where/if I'll be working in August/September.
   92. Greg K Posted: May 01, 2019 at 05:41 PM (#5837375)
Hey, I was in town last year and didn't show up at the bar either! It's what all the cool people do.

Doesn't everybody bookmark these? Priceless comedy once we have links to the action shots.

I’d like to see more Statcast data in this year’s game report.

Ah, you're volunteering to provide & run the equipment? Brilliant! We'll all be thrilled to see the results. Now, we know Jason had the whole launch-angle thing figured out years ago, but we need more data on who goes upright-to-prone fastest on the way out of the batter's box.
