You Are Cordially Invited to SOFTBALL IN THE CITY

Permit application process has been started, with any luck we’ll be frolicking in the North Meadow of Central Park some sunny Saturday in July or August.* Attendance will be taken! Those not in attendance will be talked smack of!

Further details will be posted as they become available, or as I remember them. If you’re in contact with primates (or other beings) who don’t regularly visit the site, make sure to let ‘em know! They don’t need to be good, there are already enough of you who make me look bad.

RSVP before game time, whenever that turns out to be. Or just show up.

*Okay, I requested 11 - 2 on July 20, we’ll see what happens
**Per post #130 below, it’s Saturday, August 10, 11 - 2 on North Meadow field #4. I’ll try to keep the info up here up to date with the latest status. -vi

Shooty, I usually drive to Secaucus Junction and then take a 10-minute train ride to midtown.

I normally would drive to Newark and park at my office but I'm assuming I'm going to drink too much to drive back...

Planning on Ubering down and taking the NY Waterway Ferry from Weehawken to 40th St., then cabbing it uptown to the Park.

And then...

I have tix to Nats @ Mets that night -- which could turn out to be large -- so it'll be the LIRR to Willets Point after the 19th hole.
   202. Lassus Posted: August 05, 2019 at 12:23 PM (#5868412)
Should have planned a group trip to that game. I might go for walk-ups.

So have we determined the post-game location? I need to know on which side of the island to park.

fyi, it's Mets Hawaiian Shirt Night on Saturday, no kidding
   205. catomi01 Posted: August 05, 2019 at 05:10 PM (#5868523)
Equipment check?

I'm bringing clinchers and can bring bases if needed. It would be easier if someone else brought bases though - any volunteers? I'll also have at least 2-3 bats.

Also - headcount if we're tracking that - its me plus 5 (but the last two are not firm).

Impressive. I think we'll bill next year's game as Primates vs catomi0s

Alas, I have no equipment other than a glove. Can't even find my bat.

I'm fresh off of the annual family reunion abbreviated game, which lasted 3 innings. Went 2-2 with 2 doubles (one ground rule, the other three feet from being a HR), 3 RBI, 1 run scored, and a TOOTBLAN. One ball fielded, no errors.

Ready to ######' crush it this Saturday. Put me at the top of the draft list!

I've got a glove, but nothing else.
   208. Ray (CTL) Posted: August 06, 2019 at 12:50 AM (#5868651)
I'll be there. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Though I have to be in some place called Connecticut late that afternoon so I won't have time for drinks, unfortunately.

We should just pick a side of the island for after game drinking so folks like snapper know where to park. I don't think we need to find a specific bar just west or east. We can just limp into the first bar that looks decent.
   212. Never Give an Inge (Dave) Posted: August 06, 2019 at 09:51 AM (#5868687)

Since we did East Side last year, why don't we plan to drink on the West Side this time? Jake's Dilemma is a cromulent sports bar at 81st and Amsterdam (we may have gone there two years ago, I can't remember) and there's a bunch of other places around there if Jake's is too crowded or if people want other food options.
   213. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: August 06, 2019 at 09:51 AM (#5868688)
West is probably better around 96th St, right? We'll exit the park on the transverse, IIRC. On the East side, we won't hit many bars until 3rd Ave.
   214. Shooty would run in but these bone spurs hurt! Posted: August 06, 2019 at 09:55 AM (#5868691)
West it is, then! Let it be written.

and so it is done.
   216. snapper (history's 42nd greatest monster) Posted: August 06, 2019 at 10:01 AM (#5868695)
Looks like Jake's has half-priced beer, plus other specials 12-8. Could be a winner.

If we can make it the 20 blocks. Might lose a few stragglers.

Ah, didn't realize we were that far up. In that case, maybe Dive Bar (96th and Amsterdam) is a better option.

Unless I'm wrong, I think the North Meadow is above the 97th St. transverse. So, that might be better.

Edit: Looks like one can park near in the 90s on Amsterdam for $20-25, so that's cool.

That was for the originally posted date of 7/20. For 8/10 I have multiple commitments in multiple states, not counting softball and/or New York.

I'm likely backing out of day 1 of Saberseminar in Boston (my son has tickets), regardless. That leaves my Scout troop's fundraiser Saturday morning in CT, which I can back out of if we have enough adults to cover it. I just haven't gotten confirmation of that yet.

You're going to promote the militarization of our youth over wholesome group activities like softball? I'm calling CFS.

I'll leave home around 0630 and get back around 8-9 o'clock. That's a long day, you guys better make it worth my while!

Fingers crossed for Amtrak and Metro-North running on time tomorrow, I'm just going to train it both ways so I don't have to worry about any sort of driving after the postgame. Depending on how early I roust myself from bed, I'll be there around 10:30 or 11:15.

Ray is a good pitcher, among many good qualities.

that helps!

fading now, but looking to rebound for the "somehow, he make it work, even if it isn't pretty" annual event.

with another Mets win, I'll break out the Mets fanboy cap with some sort of red top/blue bottom combo.

Catomi06 to the DL with an elbow injury, rest of us will be getting on a train around 830 and should arrive around 1030-1045. Me and one of them can and will also pitch.
Side note - if anyone wakes up and has/can get bases, that would be fantastic. They are more awkward to move than I remember. If not, I’ll have them, a couple of bats, and a half dozen clinchers.

Listen to your body dept.

I woke up with a tweak in my upper thigh, that I know is going to pull the second I do any kind of movement required on the ball field. I've pulled enough muscles in my life to know what's lurking. I won't be coming today. That sucks. Enjoy.

Shooty "played with pain" in the post-game festivities after a throwing mishap (which is to say, he tried to throw the ball effectively).

Chicago Joe - well, his night presumably is still young.

Great to see a surprise appearance from AndrewJ.

The pleasure was all mine. Already looking forward to next year.

seeking "proof of life" for anyone over 40 who played on Sunday.

I'll start.

I rarely take Advil or really any medication/aid (stubborn Irish), but hit 2 Advils before and 2 Advils after.

I tell you, those are some magic beans.*

I'm here. Foot's bad, but not as bad as I thought.

I’m not 40 for another few months but I’m here. Felt a bit stiff this morning but I ran 16 miles anyway (training for the NYC Marathon in November).

ok, that's kind of ruining the meme there, Dave.
:)

or should I call you, "Outlier"?

I'll be 50 in 6 months, never exercise, and for playing on both teams, I turned out great. I had walked to the field from columbus circle.

I'm only an outlier because Blastin didn't play this year. He would have run 16 miles on his way to the game, and 20 the next morning.

But honestly, I'm just trying to get my miles in before my body starts to fall apart as you all are leading me to believe is imminent :)

I'll be 50 in roughly the same time frame, run regularly, and I'm a wreck. My ankles and shoulders are aching. To be fair, I spent most of Sunday afternoon fixing a sliding glass door at my house and moving furniture. And my Saturday morning run (3 miles before heading to NYC for the game) was on what pass for "roads" around and through the town landfill property. So I'm not sure how much of the aching stemmed from softball.

Nah, it's like a car. The less miles you put on, the longer it lasts.

my right knee and maybe right hamstring barking a little bit this morning - that dreaded "second day."

but could be worse.

I was sore and I didn't even play! LOL

I did have the Bataan Death March up to the North Meadow and then a lot of standing on the 7 train out to Citi Field, so my dogs were barkin' most of Sunday -- but I didn't get out of bed until 11:00, so...

OK..Team Catomi was scheduled for 4 games yesterday as well...won the 1st, won by forfeit the second, and then split our two modified games. All are alive and well, but two now report feeling like they got hit by a truck...and I might have broken my thumb on that tag play at first in the 1st inning...we have two more modified games tonight, so health status subject to change.

Well, I survived the game more or less. Spent a couple of hours Sunday at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden with a friend and her 4 year old (ie, I was ambulatory; yay!). Went to the gym 6:30 this morning, lifted some weights, came home and played an hour or so of tennis. Then did laundry; this involves carrying the basket of dirty clothes 100 yards or so downhill to the laundry room, then carrying the basket of clean but now wet clothes back up the hill to hang on the line. This summer I've realized I'm too old to be doing this. And still I persist.

Edmundo's injury & no-show made me the oldest player, and by my 3rd AB I was definitely feeling it. Hit the ball well my first time up, less well the 2nd, even less the 3rd...etc. Isn't practice supposed to lead to improvement?

Everyone, check your calendars and let me know which dates you'll be available next July & August. Central Park field permit process opens in November so I want to be ready to jump right on it!

Second-day soreness here too, mostly in the thighs, though a light workout yesterday helped and I can tell it will pass. I'm 41 btw.

I'm likely out the weekends of July 18 and August 8 next year.
