Looks like the Marlins are going to give it up. This is one of the more brutal six-game losing streaks — to the Reds and Marlins — I can remember.

Atlanta Braves @Braves 6m6 minutes ago

The #Braves have placed RHP Mike Soroka on the 10-day DL (retroactive to May 14) due to a right shoulder strain. LHP Max Fried has been recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett and will start tonight’s game against the Cubs.

How many players will the Cardinals put on the DL today? Carson Kelly joins the -- I wanna say 5? -- pitchers. Guess they needed a battery-mate.

EDIT: Duh, forgot Molina. Okay ANOTHER battery-mate.
   10. perros Posted: May 17, 2018 at 06:11 PM (#5674604)

Justin Turner is back and he says NO!

I love Turner. He makes a huge difference. The problem for the Dodgers going forward (besides no Seager) are that there are eight teams between them and a wildcard.

Their best bet is still to win the West. Not impossible with over four months to go in the season.

That JDM contract is looking like a winner!

Mookie on again, JD homer makes it 2-0. Mookie with another run scored. Would love to see him give 150 runs scored a shake. No one outside of Bagwell has been near that for over 70 years.

Phils' catcher wearing gray uni, gray mask, gray chest protector, gray shinguards. Looks really strange.

When was it that the Orioles started sucking ? Seems like it was 10 years ago, but probably more like 3 or 4 ?
Machado should not waste his time with those losers.

Come to San Francisco , Manny, and make SF great again ! -casts lure-

Jesus Christ, that Betts dude is so good ! How can a sucky town like Baston deserve someone like that ?

I cannot, for the love of me, remember any season with a player anything like, and who tasted like Mookie Betts.
Not even in the vicinity of Bettselgeuse.

Machado is definitely going to get paid this winter. I hope he continues his amazing year because I'm curious as to how much and for how long he is going to sign for.

They were a wild card two years ago, and a year ago Sunday they were in first place in the AL East. From 2012 to 2016 they averaged 89 wins.
   19. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 17, 2018 at 08:40 PM (#5674662)
Mookie with his 3rd hit of the game, looking to score for the 46th time this season.

Price pitching too good to be true, I'm expecting bad things over the next 2 innings from him.
   20. Jay Seaver Posted: May 17, 2018 at 08:40 PM (#5674663)
This Gausman fellow the Orioles have pitching is setting a new standard for not holding runners on first. The way Mookie & JBJ have stolen on him is bonkers.
   21. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 17, 2018 at 08:41 PM (#5674664)
Mookie steals 2B. Price only on 54 pitches after 5. That's pretty darn economical.

Cardinals, along with several other teams have been saving for his free agency...
   23. Perry Posted: May 17, 2018 at 08:42 PM (#5674667)
Cards go down 1-0 and it feels like 6 the way they're (not) hitting. Although Marp is at least starting to hit some balls hard the other way (he said, desperately grasping at straws).
   24. cardsfanboy Posted: May 17, 2018 at 08:42 PM (#5674669)
You have a stud catching prospect on the roster, and yet you keep starting your backup catcher every other game, this is not how you win friends and influence people.

I must admit, I'm kind of disappointed nobody else is going to steal against Gausman tonight, because Eck getting more and more flabbergasted by it each time is hilarious.

Velasquez scares me, but so far, so good tonight against the Cards, with a little help from Odubel Herrera.

Who was leading the majors in BA before Mookie went on a tear tonight.

I'll flat out state that if my team gave him 10 at 250 mil I wouldn't complain.... but I doubt he breaks 300 mil... so hopefully that qualifies as a range... An elite third baseman with a good bat.... sure, a guy who still thinks he's a shortstop regardless of the evidence...not so much..

   34. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:07 PM (#5674685)
Price - - 6IP, 6K, 3Hit, O BB, 62 pitches. For Price that's a big wow. Outside of Machado is the rest of the team really that awful?

Andy, the Orioles tempted the baseball gods by giving Davis that ludicrous contract and now the baseball gods have decided that level of stupidity was going to cost them years of any chance of being decent....

Once Machado goes(trading deadline perhaps?), the O's are going to be pretty hard to watch
   35. perros Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:09 PM (#5674686)
Herrera hits a broken-bat roller to second and beats a gimpy Carpenter's throw with a headfirst slide.

It could, but Machado is often thought of as the "also ran" candidate in the Harper sweepstakes, and a smart team that approaches him early with a big contract before Harper signs, could be in good shape.

The Cardinals have literally been positioning themselves for over two seasons for the Machado sweepstakes. He's been pretty much the only guy on their radar the entire time....and it will not be a surprise to me to see them end up making a deal for him before the season ends, to give him a taste of playing in St Louis(of course that ultimately depends on whether or not that environment will appeal to him, in the case of Heyward, that didn't work out at all, and it's sad to all Cardinal fans that we couldn't get him for the price that the Cubs ended up paying for him.
   41. cardsfanboy Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:15 PM (#5674694)

I haven't looked at any news today, but yes... that and Waino on the 60 day..... Seems weird to bring up Baron instead of Knizner.... I get not starting the clock at all on Knizner, but honestly, he's 23 years old already, who the #### cares at this point in time?
   42. perros Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:27 PM (#5674697)

Price just cruising.

8IP, 8K, 80 pitches, I'm loving the symmetry of it.

Out of the jam. Fowler with some pretry terrible baserunning all the way around.
   45. salvomania Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:37 PM (#5674703)
Fowler with just horrible baserunning this inning. With any aggressiveness (and heads-up-edness) at all he could've scored twice, instead he's an out.

He should've scored on Carpenter's ball---why wasnt he standing on second until the ball was (or wasn't) caught? He would score easily on the misplay.

Then, with a good walking lead off third and he at least has a shot at scoring on the infield grounder, but he's too close to the bag, gets a terrible jump, then runs half-heartedly before stopping and getting in the rundown---after the catcher recovers the ball he dropped on the throw in from short. If you're going on contact, then GO!
   46. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:38 PM (#5674704)
MLB giving him a GS of 90. That seems high.

I don't like that their are 2 systems of GS. I know we discussed it in respect to the Wood game and a current game that was actually rated higher with less K's on a different system. It's annoying.
   47. cardsfanboy Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:39 PM (#5674706)
Yep... Fowler doesn't really get the concept of running on contact.
   48. ERROR---Jolly Old St. Nick Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:40 PM (#5674707)
Andy, the Orioles tempted the baseball gods by giving Davis that ludicrous contract and now the baseball gods have decided that level of stupidity was going to cost them years of any chance of being decent....

You took the words out of my mouth. Davis has all the attributes of Aaron Judge except hitting, fielding, throwing and baserunning. And he's signed through 2022.

Once Machado goes(trading deadline perhaps?), the O's are going to be pretty hard to watch

Here' one minor bit of irony: The O's beat the Yankees 3 out of 4 when they played last month in New York.

Until recently I was hoping Manny would stay in Baltimore, but now I just hope he stays out of Boston. I'd only want him to sign with the Yanks if the Red Sox were the only other AL suitor.
   49. cardsfanboy Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:43 PM (#5674708)
Tim McCarver being an idiot... "the stat system doesn't agree with the sacrifice bunt... I don't agree with that."

Let's start, the stats don't approve of sacrifices the majority of time, but at the same time, they do approve of it, when one run is a bigger deal. Currently we have a 1-0 game in favor of the Phillies in the 8th inning man on first no outs... a sacrifice here isn't a bad idea... and the stats would support that.. It's the sacrifices in the 4th inning that the stats disapprove of. ....

Now it's first and second no outs.... and McCarver is arguing that the metrics say don't sacrifice... which again is not the case.... the Phillies need one run cushion... of course sacrifice is a real legitimate option.
   50. salvomania Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:44 PM (#5674709)
Not surprising that a Mike Matheny team plays dumb. Hicks joins the Brotherhood of Questionable Decisions on that bunt play.
   51. perros Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:45 PM (#5674711)
Let's see if the Phillies can put this one away.
   52. cardsfanboy Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:45 PM (#5674712)
of course saying that, the Phils have now loaded the bases with no outs.. without once sacrificing....
   53. cardsfanboy Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:47 PM (#5674713)
Hicks made a piss poor decision, i'll agree... saying it's because of Matheny is ridiculous...The guy has done nothing but win as a manager, heck the team is performing better than most people thought they would do right now.... and that is with the predictable best players on the team sucking ass.
   54. perros Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:48 PM (#5674714)
Baseball is a funny game. The Cards blistered a couple of balls in the sixth for two outs, while the Phillies bloop a couple after Hicks' questionable attempt at the force and tally an important two runs.

   55. cardsfanboy Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:50 PM (#5674715)
ugly ass 8th inning for the Cardinals. After a failed 7th inning where they could make the game interesting.
   56. perros Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:51 PM (#5674716)
Odubel now just a point back of Mookie, .363 to Betts' .364.

What a terrific start.

Ah, and Machado burns them for runs, 14th homer, now 6-2
   59. the Hugh Jorgan returns Posted: May 17, 2018 at 09:59 PM (#5674720)
Price closes it out on 95 pitches.

Nice game though, 2Runs, 9IP, 8K, no BB, 5 hits. I'll take every day and twice on Sundays.
   60. perros Posted: May 17, 2018 at 10:03 PM (#5674721)
The Cards should deal for Yacksel Rios to start a collection of neck tattoos.

39/Moses:

Which would suck, because I love Maddon’s lineup tonight.

Almora
Zobrist
Bryant
Rizzo
Contreras
Baez
Russell
Happ
Lester

Do the Cubs face a lefty starter in a Cincy? If so I’d love to see him use this batting order (speaking of which, I’ll be at Sunday’s game.). I think this is pretty much their optimal lineup.
   62. perros Posted: May 17, 2018 at 10:08 PM (#5674724)
The thing that most irritates me about the reliever carousel is the fear/inability to fire strikes. You've got a ####### four run lead to work with, goddammit.

If that replay takes more than 10 seconds to overturn the call, then replay is useless..

DeJong was hit on the wrist by a ball, and the ump originally called foul... and it was not even close to the bat....

Dejong was fine with the ump call "I'm a second year player....I'm not going to rock the boat".... but c'mon that was an obvious hit by pitch.

Some off days are better than others - Yankees Stuck At Airport Overnight:
The Yankees spent the night at Dulles International Airport in Virginia, general manager Brian Cashman said, after their scheduled flight to Kansas City for the start of a weekend series against the Royals was delayed for close to 12 hours. With hotels in the Washington area at near capacity at such a late hour, the Yankees opted to spend the overnight either waiting in the terminal or on the plane itself. … The Yankees' flight eventually took off at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

It's a glamorous life. Sometimes.

Odd that they wouldn't just commandeer a bunch of $1500 a night rooms, surely some of those are available?

the Yankees opted to spend the overnight either waiting in the terminal

Hmmm, now some of you are thinking of schlubbing it in the terminal itself in those awful seats, but in fact these guys are in the first class lounge with those leather lounges you can recline nicely on and probably some beds, showers and an air hostess or two about. Sounds ok to me...
