   101. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 16, 2018 at 09:14 PM (#5728491)
Only about an hour and fifteen minute flight from O'Hare, too. I have been playing music at a bar just about every Friday night for the past several years, which I love, but for 2019 I've resolved to start taking one weekend completely off from music per month to give me more time to go to visit my family in Champaign or to take weekend getaways with my wife. So many places are easily accessible from Chicago - Louisville (Spahn, I'll let you know), Denver, Cleveland, Minneapolis are quick flights, with a lot of Michigan within driving distance. Thoughts?

EDIT: Actually Louisville is probably in the "drive" column.

co-sign on Pittsburgh. has its own real character. I was at the Jets-Steelers AFC Championship game there, and took an ice-cutter ferry from the hotel across to the stadium. a sea of Steelers jerseys came ashore. it was impressive.

I like Milwaukee and Cleveland, too. can't top Chicago, but they all have their charms.
   104. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: August 16, 2018 at 09:22 PM (#5728505)
Probably the right call, but I'd have had him lay down the bunt and given him till one batter on in the 7th

Joe's been doing that more lately, but it's come back to bite them a bunch. Tougher to risk in a 1 run game when it doesn't look like the offense can pick you up.

Heh. I'm open to suggestions, I just haven't heard anything about, say, Indianapolis that would make me eager to visit, only because I haven't heard much about it at all. Bloomington is probably nice.
   107. cardsfanboy Posted: August 16, 2018 at 09:33 PM (#5728515)
I'm an easy customer, I don't think there has been a game I've been to that I didn't enjoy myself. (only about 7 or so non-STL parks but still, enjoyed them all, but liked Milwaukee the best, it smelled like food)
   108. cardsfanboy Posted: August 16, 2018 at 09:34 PM (#5728517)
Cardinals, as always this year, aren't giving up...
   109. What did Billy Ripken have against ElRoy Face? Posted: August 16, 2018 at 09:35 PM (#5728519)
St. Louis and Milwaukee are also options of course, but I've already been to both a bunch of times. Although not particularly recently.

I've been to all those places.

If you're into minor league ball, the AAA Louisville Bats have a very nice stadium, right downtown along the river. I don't remember much about the city beyond that, though, because I believe we went down to Mammoth Cave on our other day there. Which wasn't quite worth the trip, although the park around the cave is very lovely Kentucky mountain country.

Denver is great. Great city, mountains near enough to daytrip to. Was just in Minneapolis a few months ago, and that's a fine city, too - plus, if you're hanging around downtown (which you can easily do), you don't even need a car to get there from the airport, train is quick and easy.

Only spent a day in Cleveland. Indians game and some record shopping. Found some good record stores, as a whole the place didn't seem half as post-apocalyptic as I'd been led to believe.

Michigan? Meh. Actual Michiganders swear by the place - at least the non-Detroiters, anyway - but I don't know anyone else who ever liked it.

Bader with a roe to drive in another run...
   112. Howie Menckel Posted: August 16, 2018 at 09:40 PM (#5728528)
I've spent maybe a couple of months of my life in Indianapolis.

let's see - compared to 20 years ago, the downtown has woken up a bit.

true story: in the mid-1990s, the Knicks and Pacers played a (couple of) Memorial Day weekend pair of playoff games there. Saturday and Monday. in between was the Indy 500, which was still the Indy 500 at the time.

so you figure, wow, Sunday night is gonna be like Mardi Gras in N'Awlins (which I attended many years ago, but I digress) - well, not like that, but lively, right?

by 11 pm on a Sunday night of a holiday weekend, the only place still open was Hooter's - and even they were giving customers the hairy eyeball at that point.

Mark Kriegel, then of the NY Daily News, had a killer line: "When the go-to place downtown on a weekend night is Steak'N/Shake......"

and every cabbie was obligated to hawk the St. Elmo Steakhouse, which is - okay I guess.

went back a few years ago, and as I note - some progress.

the people are Indiana Nice, as they call it. but is it a Triple-A city compared to the others? MLB and I say yes.

I like Denver - also has its own character. worth a visit.

Minneapolis - well, they have Minnesota Nice. it's okay.

haven't been to Detroit in too long. obviously has its unique history. do they still have Greektown?

Let's go Cards ! No other interesting games ON !

BTW, New York Jets 3 - Redskins 9 , 3rd quarter.

Carpenter with a 34 game on base streak. Since 2010 that puts him tied for 38th... in other words, it's a non-story for the most part, he needs to 44 just to break the top ten in this decade.
   116. Brian C Posted: August 16, 2018 at 09:51 PM (#5728535)
Strop feels like he's not super sharp tonight. Maybe 75% of his usual sharpness. Still good enough to K the first two batters, but nothing feels certain.

So did the Cardinals last season... and the funny part about it, it was planned to honor Kolten Wong, 11 days before the promo, the Cardinals sent Wong down to the minors, then recalled him just in time for Kolten Wong Hawaiian shirt day.

Definite +1 on the 1st time experience at PNC Park. I went in late July against the Mets, paid up for a great seat behind 1B dugout, and had a blast. Never left my seat, took in the views, and they won on a walk off hit.
   120. cardsfanboy Posted: August 16, 2018 at 09:52 PM (#5728540)
McLaughlin just doesn't get it... in middle of him giving Shildt a blowjob he says "the game is exciting, more fun, energetic, exactly what the fans wanted to see."....

um no, the fans wanted to see winning, that is it. I don't care whatever else you argue, the fans want to see winning.

So unfair!

New Buffalo is lovely - a burger at Redamaks, beer or two at Green Bush, weekend at a B&B... I also have enjoyed weekends in Grand Haven, Traverse City, etc

I'm hopeful and optimistic also. Cardinals have 10 walk offs this year, the record in season is 17 by the Pirates(1959, 1977) so a ways to go... but at least tie it while you are at home, then it makes it much more likely for another walk off. Although I have liked the positives that the team has created with the run differential in the past week.

I was at that same series, on the Saturday night where the Bucs won 5-0. Our seats were in the front row of the second level, probably right above yours. Incredible view, and a great fireworks display after the game too.

Just out of curiosity, Zonk, where are you from originally?
   130. cardsfanboy Posted: August 16, 2018 at 10:02 PM (#5728557)
Cardinal announcers are at least honest about their objections on Shildt's piss poor bullpen management, this is one thing that it's clear he needs work on, and the announcers are at least semi-honest about that. Of course at the same time, his bullpen management is somewhat working so you could say that the judgement should be based on results not expectations of his moves.

A little burg in between South Bend and LaPorte - New Carlisle...

Holy cow, Bader is really Gooder !

the thing is that I've seen him all season long, I know he's fast as ####, I know he can field, but at the same time, he never really looks like it. (not the fielding part, he was advertised as a gold glove quality minor league fielder and just doesn't make mistakes, but I thought of his strength as just good skills, not sheer speed... he really doesn't look like he runs as fast as he does, until you look away and back and all the sudden he's in a different spot that you expect him to be)
   134. cardsfanboy Posted: August 16, 2018 at 10:05 PM (#5728564)
I'm pretty sure Ozuna is going to tie this game up.

My optimistic and positive Cards win game projection is down to 23%. And that, with a ####### thrower like Miller.

And Cards playing Def Leppard-Animal... this can only be a win !

Jose Reyes AND Jose Bautista in the lineup? No wonder I haven't been watching.
   142. cardsfanboy Posted: August 16, 2018 at 10:18 PM (#5728577)
omg... The Cardinal announcers are not properly prepped for their comments.

AL Hrabosky Cardinals are losing but who "has the most come from behind wins in baseball with ten, the Cardinals."

ummm no, the Cardinals have 10 walk off wins, that is something completely different than come from behind wins, which is around 30 for most teams.

I'm looking at Matt Wieters career on bb-ref and remembering Prospectus kinda declaring him a god, and backwards looking I don't see any reason why anyone would have made that declaration.

I believe the Cubs lead baseball with 37 or so.

lol... the Cardinals have not had a 1-2-3 9th inning since August 5th... not really sure what that means without examining it, but that is still 11 or so games.
   152. Howie Menckel Posted: August 16, 2018 at 10:39 PM (#5728593)
Kazuhisa Makita on for the Padres in the bottom of the inning, DBacks already lead 5-0

on MLB Network, one of the local TV feeds then describes the "tsunami offense" of the DBacks in the first inning

this will produce between zero and a bazillion comments on BBTF
   153. cardsfanboy Posted: August 16, 2018 at 10:40 PM (#5728594)
I believe the Cubs lead baseball with 37 or so.

Right, that is the difference. (for the record, the average last year for all teams was 37 come from behind victories, there were 1122 comeback victories in 2017, divided by 30 equals 37.4 (in 2018 it's 782 which comes to an average of 26.0666) )

the carnage is over at 46.
based on 154, looks like this an NL record-only - unless those 1950 AL day game were staggered so a 24-hour issue arises.
   161. cardsfanboy Posted: August 16, 2018 at 10:50 PM (#5728610)
ugly ass game, and ugly ass announcing from the home team. (it's like the Cardinal announcers have found their Trump and can't see anything wrong...from yesterday, and it's a paraphrase but it accurately captures the comment "it's like the second Shildt took over, the defense and base running got better even though there was no changes made" Today "the defense and running sucks but that is nothing to blame on the manager."

I don't see how this is an NL record either. 1925 Pirates scored 9/21/24 runs in consecutive games for 54 runs in three games and 45 in two.

   164. cardsfanboy Posted: August 16, 2018 at 10:58 PM (#5728614)
Angels are up 8-6, and had a triple play turned against them, this is potentially another example of the triple play being more likely in games that you lose(as a defense) than you win. I don't know if this is still the case, but it used to be that if you get a triple play in a game you lost more often than you win (there is a reason for that, struggling pitchers need a triple play more than guys who are on their game)
