Young Acuna raising eyebrows at Braves camp

TAMPA, Fla.—Ronald Acuna has steadily become a well-known figure among Braves fans since he caught the attention of Bobby Cox and some of Atlanta’s upper-level executives during the 2015 Instructional League. But the 19-year-old outfielder’s legend has truly grown since he came to this year’s Spring Training and gained the welcome surprise he would have a chance to compete in some big league exhibition games.

Though he has been used simply as an extra called over from Minor League camp, Acuna played in his 10th Grapefruit League game Sunday, batting leadoff and playing center field in the Braves’ 10-2 victory over the Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field.

If you take the Braves front office at their word, their plan for the rebuild begun in 2014 was to build a farm system that provided “waves, not windows.” What that means in Braves-landia speak is “we don’t want a system that generates a single wave of prospects and then takes years to develop another round; we want a system that is constantly feeding young talent into the ML roster, year over year, so we can fill one or two holes here or there with a free agent acquisition and compete for pennants every year.” Again, if you take them at their word, that’s the plan.

Ronald Acuna has bubbled up of late as a real OF prospect. He’s very young, and shouldn’t be in the mix for a MLB spot until 2019 or so, but he is a name to keep in mind along with the “wave” that should bring Kevin Maitan to the Bigs as well…
