Apparently the "Heart and Hustle" awards for each team were announced today (Mookie for the Red Sox, hooray I guess). I noticed it because the Yankee winner was backup catcher Austin Romine which when I first saw it I thought it was the Yankee twitter feed taking a shot at Sanchez.

Hey dudez, dumb q: what's the best measure of team defense nowadays?

I was looking at park-adjusted defense on BPro and even that seems like there's a loose correlation between big parks + good defense (maybe because of foul territory?) and bad defense/tiny parks. What's the best way to look at this?

Defensive efficiency rating (DER), I think. Or team total DRS/UZR.

Not surprisingly Sanchez is out of the lineup for the Yankees tonight. He's probably hurt again and headed to the DL. And with what happened last night, this is really a disaster of a season for him.

At least Judge and Stanton are batting back-to-back against a RHP for once ... hopefully this is the start of that combo on a daily basis.

And per Buster Olney, he's heading back on the disabled list. Ughhhhh.

Yeah, I agree. Love Didi, but he shouldn't be hitting third. Just let the monsters eat.

That's fine, but I just prefer not having a guy with a .326 OBP occupying one of the top four spots in my lineup.

Negative, O.M.

Those awards were decided some time ago, at least well before last night's "incident".

Ironically, Trea Turner won for the Nationals after his decision to walk to the dugout instead of running to 1B on what was very likely a put out after a botched bunt attempt.

In other news: HOW WILL THE NATIONALS SABOTAGE THEIR PLAYOFF HOPES EVEN FURTHER TODAY?!
   13. perros Posted: July 24, 2018 at 04:09 PM (#5715167)
now .189-hitting Sanchez, who hits a meek grounder to 2nd

I assume Mets fan Howie has to get his jollies where he can, as Sanchez's meek grounder registered 108.3 mph.

That was probably weirder than Sanchez' play. What was Turner doing there?

I only saw a replay one time, but I think he squared to bunt and when the pitch came up and in he spun away from it and briefly lost his balance. The pitcher fielded it and he figured he had no chance so he just walked back to the dugout and was called out for abandoning the base path. He said something to the effect that he "probably should have run it out", with which just about everybody agrees. Deivi Martinez said last night that Trea probably won't play tonight, I guess as punishment. It's starting to look more and more like he has lost the clubhouse, what with Scherzer running the bullpen when he pitches and Jayson Werth's visit just before the All-Star Break receiving rave reviews by EVERYBODY in the clubhouse, looking almost like a manager-in-waiting.

Seven managers in less than 14 seasons for the Nats. Not quite Steinbrennerian, but George recycled his seven a time or five.

Too bad Sanchez is out, he should be DH, nothing else IMHO. He is even lazier and looks even more distracted by girls, nachos etc. in the stands, than Robinson Cano used to.

Between Hendricks' first-inning struggles and Maddon's recent views on when a game gets out of reach, there's a nonzero chance that position players might have to give the Cubs 8 innings today.

Latest on Britton trade, from MLBTR:

8:01pm: The two sides are in agreement on a trade, tweets Heyman. Presumably, that agreement is still pending medical reviews.

7:50pm: Joel Sherman of the New York Post tweets that Triple-A lefty Josh Rogers could also be a part of talks. The 24-year-old doesn’t rank among the Yankees’ top tier of prospects, but he’s worked to a 3.95 ERA with 6.8 K/9, 2.4 BB/9, 1.07 HR/9 and a 40.1 percent ground-ball rate in 109 innings (19 starts) for the team’s top affiliate in Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre so far in 2018.

7:32pm: Three players would be going back to the Orioles in the deal, tweets Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com. Martino tweets that other prospects are in the proposed deal, but Tate would be the headliner of the trade.
   51. rconn23 Posted: July 24, 2018 at 09:06 PM (#5715355)
Tate, Rogers and Carroll are the rumored return for Britton. That's a pretty good deal for the Yankees, IMO.

would be bold and interesting if Yankees did a "bullpen game" in the 1-game wild card contest.

not really their style, but they could use 5 of their top 6 and still have an unused arm - and maybe a couple of lightly-used ones - heading into Game 1 of the next round

Here’s what one trusted scout thinks of Dillon Tate, the headliner in the NYY-BAL Britton trade: “He’s a future No. 4 with potentially more impact in the pen. Big fastball, plus slider, makings of a useable changeup.” Scout likes the deal for the Orioles.

...........

(not that it doesn't help the Yankees as well)

It's a palatable return. Carroll has a chance to be a good reliever. Tate and Rogers are back end guys, but the Orioles need any pitchers they can get. Still, the Yankees didn't have to give up any of their top prospects.
