answer from an old stat of the day question:
The MLB leaders in CG thus far (with 2 each) are the amazing troika of Mike Minor, Lucas Giolito, and Zach Eflin. Yeah, like we expected that.
   2. TomH Posted: June 27, 2019 at 12:55 PM (#5856377)
new stat: The lowest MLB ERA among pitchers with > 20 IP is Shane Greene; 30 IP, 0.90. He has allowed as many HR as earned runs.

Shane Greene has lowered his career ERA to ... 4.57.
   3. TomH Posted: June 27, 2019 at 01:02 PM (#5856383)
One more: Name the MLB Player who has

a) Committed the most errors at his position in his league in 2017,
b) Committed the most errors at his position in his league in 2018, and
c) Committed the most errors of any major leaguer at any position so far in 2019

   4. Nasty Nate Posted: June 27, 2019 at 01:08 PM (#5856386)
What does "at his position" mean in the context of that question? Do you want 9 answers each for 2017 and 2018?
   5. PreservedFish Posted: June 27, 2019 at 01:12 PM (#5856387)
No, it's just one guy.
   6. Nasty Nate Posted: June 27, 2019 at 01:14 PM (#5856388)
A truly bad fielder would commit errors at other players' positions.

3--If I get the question you want to know who has led his position in errors three years in a row as of now. I believe it's Tim Anderson of the Sox.

And BrewCrewball is having one serious meltdown where it's posters complaining about posters complaining about the Brewers not playing Hiura in the majors.
   9. TomH Posted: June 27, 2019 at 01:53 PM (#5856403)
#7 Masters is correct.

Anyone got a database to easily compute most errors committed in MLB, 2017-2019? Tim must lead by a LOT.

Fangraphs has it. Anderson has 64, Rafael Devers next at 50.

What did we do to deserve a Darvish-Chatwood 1-2 punch less than a day apart?
   12. Walks Clog Up the Bases Posted: June 27, 2019 at 03:02 PM (#5856457)
Chatwood is such complete and utter trash.

thanks snapper

The Mets provide such an important service in a country so desperately in need of humility. All Americans should be Mets fan.

My mind must be stuck in 2014 or something. The idea that Yu Darvish isn't good just doesn't compute.

No, it's more than that. The idea that a starting pitcher with 11 K/9 for his career isn't good just doesn't compute.
   17. Moses Taylor, aka Hambone Fakenameington Posted: June 27, 2019 at 05:03 PM (#5856522)
Darvish's K rate is still fine - 10.5K/9. His walk rate has doubled so far with the Cubs, plus his HR rate is up.

Who would have thought the day the Cubs roll out the B lineup they'd hang a 9 spot?

Basically, he's the worst pitcher in the NL in the other 2 of the "three true outcomes" - literally, he leads the NL in HR allowed and walks allowed. Interestingly, Baseball Prospectus's metric, DRA, which I think stands for "deserved run average" - i.e., what SHOULD his ERA be, has Darvish at 3.33 in 2019 (3.14 for his career). His DRA in 2018 was 4.73, so basically they're saying he was legitimately bad last season, but this season he's been a lot more unlucky than bad. Which could be true. He clearly still has exceptional stuff; he just has too many innings with a walk, a bloop, and a blast. On the other hand, his FIP is actually worse than his ERA. I think the difference is that B-Pro says that he's been unlucky in terms of the number of home runs he's allowed.

Yeah, his xFIP is OK. The walks may not go away, but a 25% HR/FB is going to come down some.

Watching this Rays @ Twins extra innings game I am reminded of yet another reason I can't be bothered to go to a Marlins game: the g0ddamned noise blasted over the speakers that echoes all over the walled-in ballpark. It's so loud on the Rays TV feed that you almost can't hear the announcer, plus it's some obnoxious choices of what to play. Board op is drunk!
   23. Bote Man sez Deivi is MoY Posted: June 27, 2019 at 06:32 PM (#5856542)
If that Rays pitcher had botched the play, it would've been a Kolarek-al error.

With all the modern armor available, why do players still refuse to wear it all ?
I really don't get it.

Are you considered a girlie man if you wear armor ?
   26. AndrewJ Posted: June 27, 2019 at 07:08 PM (#5856547)
Four straight come-from-behind wins against the Mets. It's still before the All-Star break, but I'm starting to believe in the Phillies again.

Pretty good pitchers' duel going on in Miami. Strasburg not as sharp as Sandy Alcantara.

Jesse Dougherty @dougherty_jesse
And Sandy Alcantara has still not given up a hit and is now at three scoreless with only 29 pitches. Nationals have swung early in counts all night and have nothing to show for it so far.

Watching this Rays @ Twins extra innings game
19 pitchers used, 9 by Rays, 10 by Twins. Might be ending soon, Rays up 5-2, with Twins down to their last out in 18th.
   33. Bote Man sez Deivi is MoY Posted: June 27, 2019 at 08:04 PM (#5856555)
The 3rd inning was a defensive disaster for the Nats: Holaday (look him up) hit a sharp grounder that deflected off 2B bag, fooling both infielders charging for it, safe at 1B. Pitcher Alcantara HBP, 2 on, 0 out.

Miguel Rojas lines a ball to RF that skips right under the diving, rolling RF Eaton. Then his throw to the plate is cut off by Adams to allow the 2nd run to score when they had a fair shot at tagging him out at home. Rojas scored on Harold Ramirez ground out. 3-0 Marlins in the T4.

And this is the resurgent Nats team that is clawing back to .500 and we're supposed to believe has a prayer to do...something?? With Strasburg on the mound?!

Meanwhile, Alcantara is stacking up the goose eggs across the line score.

How does a 1-0 game after 8 turn into a 6-3 final? The Philsdom has been touting Hector Neris as the team's All Star (somebody has to go, my pick would be Eflin). Games like this are what my son and I call "Nerising". Of course, Diaz out-Nerised Neris, so all is well that ends well.

No words.

Mattingly a little slow with the hook; Nationals now up 6-4, with a 5-run 6th against Alcantara (still batting), who’s still in there.
   37. Bote Man sez Deivi is MoY Posted: June 27, 2019 at 09:22 PM (#5856573)
Strasburg threw 111 pitches through 7 innings, 4 runs on 7 hits, 4K, 0BB. The Nats bats came alive in the 6th to put them on top so now it's time to hold on to your butts, because here comes the bullpen! Jonny Venters (yes, THAT Jonny Venters) was seen warming in the Nats bullpen as part of their latest Frankenstein experiment; no lightning has been recorded in the Miami area, though.

Sean Doolittle in with the Nationals holding a four-run lead.

Fire Deivi.

EDIT: With both Fernando Rodney and Doolittle warming, Deivi brought in Doolittle who made it interesting, but closed out the game to bring the Nationals back up to .500 ball for the first time since late April. Swept the Marlins.
   39. Howie Menckel Posted: June 27, 2019 at 10:19 PM (#5856588)
Phillies were 38-38, Mets were 37-40.

Mets led by multiple runs in all four games. a sweep would have left it at Mets 41-40, Phillies 38-42.

sweep all right - but the other one.

bonus points for last night: up 4-0 with 2nd and 3rd, one out, don't score again.

up 4-2 with 2 on late, Phillie strikes out - on a wild pitch! inning continues, bases loaded. the odds of the next guy getting a game-tying hit, which was 99.4 percent, came through.

Mike Francesa is a Yankees fan, but this is just about the spectacular incompetence of the Mets' bullpen

I just saw the highlights of the end of the Cubs game. No way is Kimbrel his listed height of 6'0. Rizzo, listed at 6'3", was towering over him. Maybe Kimbrel has developed a stoop between the beard weight and years of doing the eagle thing.
   44. puck Posted: June 28, 2019 at 12:41 AM (#5856614)
Charlie Blackmon is now hitting .458 at home.

112 runs in the last 5 games at Coors
