Yu Darvish arrives in Surprise, throws 30 pitches in bullpen session

“It was a bit overwhelming from what he did in Japan and all the background he had,” [Luis] Martinez said. “I was actually excited and happy to catch him. He threw sliders, curveballs, changeups, splits. He threw 30, and within those 30, there were about 10 different pitches. He’s unique in his own way. He’s a great talent.”

Can you be unique in someone else's way?

Sure, if they're dead. I'm thinking of becoming unique in Zeppo Marx's way. He's not using it.

Why weren't they expecting him?

Nobody expects Yu Darvish! His chief weapon ...

There's a racist joke in there somewhere, but I'm neither clever enough nor racist enough to figure it out. I *am* racist enough to know it's in there somewhere, though.

He’s unique in his own way.

Obviously spoken words should be judged differently from written ones. This is a nice quote from Martinez and it sounds like Rangers fans are in for a treat.

Yu Darvish arrives in Surprise

For some reason, the headline made me think of this.

I hope this goes better than the last time a Japanese import arrived in surprise.

Too soon!

That one turned out especially badly for Arizona, too.

He threw 30, and within those 30, there were about 10 different pitches.

The HE THROWS EIGHT/TEN/FOURTEEN DIFFERENT PITCHES!!! angle is to foreign pitchers what pumped up velocity reports used to be to American pitchers. My early prediction: Darvish throws four different pitches: a fastball (you can divide this into two-seam and four-seam if you like), a slurve, some sort of changeup, and a splitter. And of course the gyroball on third Tuesdays when the wind is right.

Yes, but he can throw it with both arms, so it counts double.
