Zack Wheeler and Aderlin Rodriguez involved in on-field incident that led to ethnic tensions

When you’re a Met if the spit hits the fan
You’ve got brothers around!

Zack Wheeler, one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, was reprimanded last weekend along with teammate Aderlin Rodriguez for an on-field incident that led to ethnic tensions in the Mets’ minor league clubhouse, according to organizational sources.

In a minor league intrasquad game last Saturday, Rodriguez, a 21-year-old infielder from the Dominican Republic, homered against Wheeler, 22, and “pimped it” around the bases, as one witness described it. Rodriguez apologized to Wheeler, but the phenom still hit Rodriguez’s teammate with a pitch later in the game. That drew a long glare from Rodriguez, who shouted at Wheeler during a slow walk to first base. At one point, the home plate umpire stepped between the two prospects.

Later, ethnic tensions arose in the clubhouse, according to two people present at the time. “Some of the American guys and some of the Latin guys were circling and yelling at each other,” one source said. The same source added that Wheeler and Rodriguez “are both great kids, competitors, and this stuff just happens sometimes.”

...Asked if there was any concern about ethnic tensions arising from the incident, DePodesta said: “From our perspective, we treated it as any parent might treat a dispute between two of their kids. You don’t take sides. There is no such thing as sides. You just try to tell them what the right thing to do is, the responsible thing to do, and you go from there. There aren’t any sides taken (by the organization).”

Typo here, I think. Wheeler hit Rodriguez, not his teammate.

Aderlin must understand, it is not enough to apologize. One must also try to redeem oneself. He should have tipped his cap at Wheeler instead.

It's a good day for a bat fight.

Did Wheeler plunk him in the ass/ribs, or go for his head? I'm fine with the former; the latter is waaaay out of bounds.

WTF, in an intrasquad game?

This Wheeler fellow sounds like trouble... Don't the Mets need an OF? I hear Soriano is available...

I don't know...even the former is pretty bad in an intrasquad game.

Showboating after a HR is pretty bad in an intrasquad game.

Depends on the degree of "showboating", but hitting a teammate on purpose? That's wayyyy worse. The dude even apologized for whatever the heck he did! If you can't accept an apology from your own frickin teammate, you've got some serious ####### blood flowing through your veins.

Zach Wheeler!
I've just hit a homer off Zach Wheeler,
And now my smiling face is
pimping round the bases
Go me!

I feel petty,
Oh, so petty,
I feel petty and shitty and white!
And I pity
Any batter in the box tonight.

I feel harming,
Oh, so harming
It's alarming how harming I feel!
And so petty
That my next stop should be Citifield.

See the petty boy on that rubber there:
Who can that vindictive boy be?
Such a petty face,
Such a petty arm,
Such a petty smile,
Such a petty me!

I feel manly
And unusual,
Could fan Stanley F. Musial, what joy,
And I'm hated
By an excitable boy!

Have you met my good friend Zach Wheeler,
The craziest boy on the bump?
You'll know him the minute you see him,
He’s the one to drop a teammate on his rump.

He thinks he's quite tough
He thinks he brings pain
He isn't that tough,
He’s merely insane.

It must be the heat
Or some rare disease,
Or too much to eat
Or maybe it's fleas.

Keep away from him,
Send him to Chino!
This is not the
Zach Wheeler we know!

Modest and pure,
Polished and refined,
Well-bred and mature
And out of his mind!

I feel petty,
Oh, so petty
That the citi should give me its key.
A committee
Should be organized to honor me.

La la la la . . .

I feel dizzy,
I feel sunny,
I feel fizzy and funny and fine,
And so petty,
R.A. Dickey need not be re-signed

La la la la . . .

See the petty boy on the rubber there:

What rubber where?

Who can that vindictive boy be?

Which? What? Where? Whom?

Such a petty face,
Such a petty arm,
Such a petty smile,
Such a petty me!

Such a petty me!

I feel manly
And unusual,
Could fan Stanley F. Musial, what joy,
And I'm hated
By a petty, excitable boy!

Which Mets fans should looooooove. If I'm the Mets, I'm secretly thrilled at Wheeler.

You got to love a pitcher who says "I own this game. Don't eff with me." Nasty sons-of-####### make the best pitchers.

Mets ... Wheeler ... this seems the appropriate musical reference:

Jokers to the right

Provide evidence that it didn't. You're the one with this idiotic theory.

Provide evidence that it didn't. You're the one with this idiotic theory.

Pitchers who don't care about hitting batters will use more of the plate and will make hitters afraid to dig in.

Have you seriously missed the fact that many successful pitchers have been known for hitting guys? Pedro Martinez is a great example. He had great control, and hit people at an elevated rate b/c he knew it helped him.

If a pitcher is afraid to hit guys, he's giving up the inside of the plate, and letting batters dig in, and dive at the outside pitches. With modern hitting approaches, you can't allow that.

Bonds was only able to do what he did b/c he was allowed to wear armor, and pitchers wouldn't throw at his head.
