Zack Wheeler winning, Rafael Montero losing in Mets’ rotation battle

Zack Wheeler further bolstered his case to start in the rotation Wednesday, when he blanked the Yankees for three innings in the Mets’ 11-4 Grapefruit League loss at First Data Field. His fastball had good life and velocity and he was able to get Yankee hitters to roll over his off-speed stuff for ground balls. His curveball got swings and misses.

As of now, the rotation is looking like deGrom, Thor, Vargas, Harvey, and Wheeler.

I really hope that Montero isn't on this team in 2018. I am just down with him.

Does Matz have an option left?

The article had good things to say about Gsellman.

Gsellman certainly has options left so that works against him. I am still a believer in him.

Yes, Matz has one remaining option.

Matz having another option left makes it even more likely that Wheeler starts the season in the rotation.

I don't think it matters much if Montero has options; I think he would easily pass through waivers.

Like I said, I don't want Montero on this team so I don't care if he is lost on waivers. In fact, I'd prefer it. It would make sure he didn't pitch. He's 9th on the depth chart with respect to starters.

You think 9 starters is going to be enough? Has last year taught you nothing?
   9. Russlan thinks deGrom is da bomb Posted: March 09, 2018 at 04:33 PM (#5636234)
He's 9th right now and I hope he's lower by the time the Mets need him.

Matz was much better today.

Without looking: who can bump him down ok wn? Gsellman, Matz, and Lugo are all ahead of him...who's next in line?

In spite of last year, and in spite of my deep meh for Vargas, they do have a lot of good depth in the rotation. Outside of Mintero, I'd be fine with any of these guys in the 4-5 slots.
