Zuckerman - Character test for battered, beaten Nationals

Span, Zimmerman, Fister, Ramos, Hairston out. Werth day-to-day. Who knew that Adam LaRoche would be the poster boy for the Nationals Institutes of Health???

Will the Washington Nationals jugger-not grind to a halt early in the season???

To think I left the ballpark immediately after Desmond's grand slam on Wednesday afternoon. In retrospect, will that turn out to be the high point of the Nats' season?

I can't believe nobody has drilled that fat meathead Uggla in the skull for what he did to Span. When is this team going to stand up for itself against these bastards and show some fight?

"You RDBs should seriously quit whining and try just enjoying the game. If you're even capable of it."

@masnKolko: Here's your new Nats lineup: Rendon 3B, Harper CF, Werth RF, LaRoche 1B, Desmond SS, Frandsen LF, Espinosa 2B, Lobaton C, Gonzalez P

Nate McClouth the very late scratch. Too bad they're not playing in D.C. or they could just bus the entire Potomac Nationals team up to Nats Park to start.

Losing four key players is always a problem. But -- especially considering that this team became notorious last year for having no bench -- they at least seem to have something to fall back on. Lobaton is a very good backup catcher. And, as amazing as this would have been to say a couple of years ago, the defense should improve with Zimmerman out. The man cannot throw the ball to first base. (They'll miss his bat though.)

Username proven once again.

Eh, Bowden was due to shut down half those guys anyway.

I assume this is a joke since in game 1 of their series here, Freeman, Ugla and Upton were all hit by a Nationals pitcher, which is what started the targeting last season. The sports teams in Washington need to understand that the rest of the country doesn't treat Washington in sports as we do in the rest of our civic lives (take one in the ass from old DC, and then just smile and go about our business, as if nothing happened).

Gonfalon B: I'm sycophantic.
Joey B: I'm sick of his antics.

Kind of early in the season for a character test. They're tied for first with 151 left to play. At this point teams should still be in startup mode: keep everyone healthy, don't let anyone rot on the bench, try to improve upon individual player weaknesses.

And the Braves aren't off to a torrid start in their non-Nats games. If they were, I might worry, but they are battered too, particularly in the rotation.

There can't be an uglier mismatch of wits on BBTF than Gonfalon vs. Joey B.

Gonzalez and the Nats are taking a beating so far on test day - 3 runs in the 1st and 2nd, 6-0 Braves after 2... and Harper out on the basepaths AGAIN.

I hate to be left hanging in the dark! So did the Nationals pass their test??

That's sweet of you to say. But in fairness, the stalking gives me a huge tactical advantage.

The notion that Uggla intentionally hit Span Friday night is... Well, it's Joey. Of course he thinks that. Idiots gonna idiot.

Hey, they're undefeated against any team other than the Braves, right?
   21. spike Posted: April 14, 2014 at 09:22 AM (#4685795)
i dont know about any tests but you'd think after last year they would be smarter than to go with 'but we're better than them!' again
   22. Rickey! trades in sheep and threats Posted: April 14, 2014 at 09:23 AM (#4685798)
I wonder if Danny Espinosa is impressed? (I hear the pitching coach(?) isn't.)

Mike Rizzo, exactly a year after last season's comments by Espinosa and Strasburg:

"We feel that we're better than this team. We respect them & respect the organization. We don't fear them."
   24. spike Posted: April 14, 2014 at 09:56 AM (#4685814)
yeah - thats what i was referring to. not sure what you gain with that. 'we think we can compete with anybody' seems like a better tack to me.
   25. DA Baracus Posted: April 14, 2014 at 10:09 AM (#4685822)
Or just cut the first sentence, let the rest speak for itself, which so far is that they're not.

Meh, it's bravado-talk. Worth what you paid for it.

The proof is in the pudding. We'll see where the rubber meets the road. They just have to go out and compete, just take things a day at a time. Can't think about the next series, gotta focus on this game. It is what it is.
