Why pitcher Kyle Farnsworth took his talents south of the border

Kyle Farnsworth is 40 years old and hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2014. You might recall that he made headlines a year ago by somewhat secretly joining the Orlando Phantoms, a semipro football team.

But none of that means Farnsworth is retired from baseball. He has been toiling the past two seasons in the Mexican League, and if his well-traveled past is any indication, there’s no telling where his next move will take him….

Despite a track record of 16 big league seasons pitching for nine ...

The reasons why the St. Louis Cardinals are always contenders - St Louis Cardinals- ESPN

Although there is a lot of talk about their draft success. How much of that success, though, is really a superior development system?

Here’s how Mozeliak summed up the challenge of contending yearly with an eye on the long term:

“Every year presents new challenges, demands and expectations. Our goal has always been to look at this team with long-term lenses and try to understand how and what we need to do to remain competitive. Ownership provides us with resources to best manage our short- and ...

Tipsheet: Suffering continues for Miller, D-Backs | Jeff Gordon | stltoday.com

I can’t wait until Miller gets traded for 10 cents on the dollar, has a great year, and people kill the Diamondbacks front office for making another horrible trade.

If there is anybody feeling worse than the shell-shocked Pittsburgh Pirates this morning, it’s poor Shelby Miller.

The former Cardinals pitcher absorbed still another loss Tuesday, falling 5-2 to the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Miller (2-11, 6.89 earned-run average) allowed those five runs on 11 hits in 4 1/3 innings.

The reeling ...

Marlins activate Giancarlo Stanton from DL | MLB.com

Mattingly said that for now, Stanton is strictly a pinch-hitting option. However, trainer Dustin Luepker and the medical staff said the power-hitting right fielder could also run the bases.

“He’s basically a bat off the bench right now, and he will continue to rehab,” Mattingly said before the game. “We feel like he will continue to get better and better. We’ll see if he will be able to get back on the field or not to play the outfield and things like that.”

Dave Dombrowski says Steven Wright was not rushed back | Boston Herald

Pinch running with one of your best pitchers is dumb.

“Again, we were confident in the initial diagnosis that there wasn’t anything structural that was going to hinder or prevent him from pitching, or put him in a position where he was doing any additional harm,” Farrell said. “So that’s not denying he’s still feeling the effects from that in the last two outs, we’ve just got to let it quiet down.”

Braves see no risk in possible Tebow signing | MLB.com

As the Braves have continued to evaluate the possibility of signing Tim Tebow to a Minor League contract, they have remained interested primarily because they do not see an obvious risk. The financial commitment would be insignificant, and the former NFL quarterback would simply fill a need for Double-A Mississippi while serving as a non-roster player.

“Whatever Tim decides, the fact that he wants to play baseball is good for the game,” Braves general manager John Coppolella said. “It’s ...

The Dodger who nearly became baseball’s second on-field fatality

According to his manager, Steve Yeager went down “like he’d been felled by a bullet.”

Fans near the on-deck circle who had a view of the incident were stunned and silent. Some turned away and a few were brought to tears.

“It was sickening,” teammate Steve Garvey said.

Randy Jones, who was on the mound when the play occurred, thought Yeager had been shot too. He was so shocked he couldn’t move.

Heyman - David Wright Headed To California For Check-Up On Neck

Mets captain David Wright is off to Los Angeles today for a scheduled checkup on his surgically-repaired neck with his surgeon, noted back special Robert Watkins, with hopes of being cleared to resume some light baseball activities, or at least receive a schedule to do so.

Wright, who’s traveling from Cincinnati where he was with the team, confirmed the appointment via email, saying it was a “routine checkup” that was “set up after surgery.”

Pittsburgh Press, September 6, 1916:

Suitcase Charley Pechous, the new Cub third sacker, is a recruit from Peoria…He received his cognomen from the fact that when he joined the Cubs he was so excited at the prospect of taking a trip with the big leaguers that he invested 80 cents in a paper suitcase in which to carry his toothbrush and hankey. He left the case on the station platform in the rain and when he picked it up the handle came away and the sides of the case fell in.

Angels’ Matt Shoemaker has surgery to stop bleeding in his skull

Los Angeles Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker had surgery Sunday night to stop additional bleeding in his skull after getting hit in the head by a line drive.

Shoemaker had the procedure late Sunday at Seattle’s University of Washington Medical Center, and athletic trainer Adam Nevala is staying with him until he is able to travel to Southern California.

Angels general manager Billy Eppler provided the update Monday in Oakland, saying Shoemaker had been receiving CT scans every 2/3 hours when the ...

Astros’ Dallas Keuchel shut down from throwing - Houston Chronicle

In addition to scratching him from his start that had been scheduled for Tuesday against the Indians, the Astros have already ruled out their ace from starting this weekend against the Cubs. With only 25 games remaining on the Astros’ schedule after Monday, the rest of the pitcher’s season is shrouded in doubt.

“I don’t know,” manager A.J. Hinch said when asked if he thought Keuchel would pitch again this season. “We’ll have to get back and see how all of these tests come back ...

Dodgers hit 5 home runs off Zack Greinke | MLB.com

odger Stadium had a healthy serving of boos reserved for Zack Greinke in his first start there since leaving for Arizona via free agency in the offseason. However, it was his former teammates who offered an even ruder welcome in a 10-2 Dodgers win on Monday night.

The Dodgers hit five homers off Greinke, a career high for the right-hander. Adrian Gonzalez got it started in the fourth with a two-run shot on a numbers-high fastball. Before the inning, Greinke had thrown three shutout innings, ...

Seth Lugo, Robert Gsellman keeping Mets alive in playoff race | Newsday

We used to view Lugo and Gsellman, a pair of lower-round 2011 picks, as temporary placeholders, Vegas guys keeping the rotation spots warm for Matz and Jacob deGrom. Not anymore. There’s no guarantee we’ll see either one again this season, and judging by the pace of their rehab stints, don’t get your hopes up.

Report: Before trade to the Mets, Jay Bruce asked to be sent ‘anywhere but New York’ | For The Win

Fatherhood has not hurt Bruce. He isn’t losing sleep or wasting energy changing diapers. Actually, he was still in Cincinnati when he became a father and was having a great year. Then they traded him to New York and his numbers declined in a New York minute. I was told when he knew he would be traded he went to the Reds and asked them to trade him anywhere but to New York. Guess they didn’t hear him right and thought he said, “Please trade me to New York.”

Being anomaly in changing game hasn’t affected Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks - Chicago Tribune

“The game has taken such a turn to power pitching that I guess my pitching style is more of an anomaly in the game today,” Hendricks said. “But there are also a lot of guys that pitch like me. We never get much recognition, obviously.

“It’s always the power pitchers with the power stuff that are going to get the headlines. There are a lot of guys out there that can flat-out pitch, make pitches, change speeds, because if you can do it and do it well, you can have a lot of success at this level. ...

You should watch the Women’s Baseball World Cup

The Women’s Baseball World Cup kicked off on September 2, and no, I don’t mean softball. I mean baseball. While it’s not well known that women still play baseball (since young girls are pushed toward softball instead of our nation’s pastime), they do, and they do it well. Sarah Hudek, the trailblazing collegiate baseball player who recently transitioned to softball, pitched in the title game of the 2014 Women’s Baseball World Cup. (Sadly, the US team lost.) That should tell you a lot ...

How Joe Maddon’s Cubs experiment is changing baseball | New York Post

This is the most important factor by far.

2. There are more pitchers. Teams now routinely carry 12 and sometimes even 13. That limits positional maneuverability for a manager, unless he has player(s) who can make it feel like he has more than 25 players available by being able to capably move around.

The education of Yoan Moncada

New York wanted Moncada at $25 million. Hastings said another team was over $30 million. The Yankees refused to budge. Hastings said Moncada would go elsewhere. The Yankees pulled their offer. Hastings called Eddie Romero, the Red Sox’s VP of international scouting, and said: “We’ve got a deal.” Just like that, over the course of two minutes, a 6-foot-2, 205-pound, switch-hitting infielder with game-breaking speed, legitimate power and a jeweler’s eye went from being convinced he was ...
