Texas Rangers: ‘When that happens, I’m going to be nasty again’: Why Rangers’ Joey Gallo says banning shifts would get him back on track | SportsDay

I’m a fan of Gallo but this is just lame. (Not as lame as the start of Home Run Derby but lame nonetheless.)

Max Scherzer doesn’t fear hitters or swimming with sharks

Q: What drives you?
A: To be better. That drive to get better for me is my No. 1 goal. To find deficiencies within my game that I believe I can get better at.

9 Pirates 7, Brewers 6 (10): Two late leads slip away

The Brewers ended the first half with six consecutive losses, getting swept in the five-game series by the Pirates. The bullpen’s inability to hold leads ruined a great day by Brett Phillips, who tripled in three runs in the eighth and singled in another in the 10th after being summoned from the minors.

A brutal end of the pre-break part of the season for Milwaukee. Meanwhile, the Pirates have joined the back end of the wild card race and start a tour of beautiful Ohio on Friday.

OTP 2018 July 16: Why Does President Trump Balk At Attending Baseball Games?

As the World Cup finale plays in my living room, it’s seems like the right time to reflect on “America’s pastime” – baseball – and its curious standing these days.

The sport gets it close-up on Tuesday night, when the Major-League All-Star Game is played in the nation’s capital. President Trump is not expected to be attendance, though he easily could zip over to the festivities upon his return from his meeting with Vladimir Putin.

Is Chase Utley a Hall of Famer?

Jumping ahead somewhat to the meat of the argument…

According to Baseball Reference, Utley’s career 65.6 WAR ranks 15th all-time at his position, and is higher than Hall of Fame second basemen Jackie Robinson, Craig Biggio, Joe Gordon, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Evers, Nellie Fox, Billy Herman, Tony Lazzeri, Bill Mazeroski, Bid McPhee and Red Schoendienst.

Using that measurement, Utley has been more valuable than 11 of the 20 second basemen already in the Hall of Fame. Lou Whitaker, Bobby Grich, ...

A rival’s struggles may make it even tougher for Mets fans

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-16-2018

Washington Herald, July 16, 1918:

Bill Phelon, the Cincinnati scribe, breaks out with the following on the situation [with the Reds]:

“The loyal fans of this town have stood about all they can. The work in the last month has capped the climax and the slogan heard among the boys is ‘never again.’ The attendance has dropped to such proportions that it takes a man with a powerful magnifying glass to see the crowd. The fans have quit Cincinnati.
...
[The Reds system] gets the hits, but no runs. It ...

Don’t fix baseball, even if it’s broken

Today’s all-or-nothing baseball is too one-dimensional. There are too many strikeouts… Also, too many of the hits are home runs. It was imprecise for Crash Davis (Kevin Costner’s character in “Bull Durham”) to say that strikeouts are “fascist,” but he was right that they are “boring,” a… And “on average, you have to wait [3 minutes and 45 seconds] between balls put in play — 41 seconds longer between movement than 20 years ago.” Steals (hence pitchouts), sacrifice bunts, ...

NYTimes: The New York Yankees Are a Moral Abomination

I mean, be reasonable: How often, as Derek Jeter’s retirement approached in 2014, were we made to endure the squealing ecstasies of television announcers too bedazzled by the fastidious delicacy of his dainty coupé-chassé en tournant on grounders to his right to notice his minuscule range or flimsy arm? Why were we forced to see him awarded a preposterous two additional Gold Gloves in his dotage when his defense was scarcely better than mediocre in his prime?

Who, moreover, can forget the ...

SABR 48 Pittsburgh Review

Mark Armour shares his SABR experience, and also provides the details on a fascinating new game, WAR war.  I think this may be bigger than blackjack.

Meanwhile, Joe Dimino and I started playing “WAR War” with the stacks of 1989 cards laying around.

If you have never heard of WAR War, don’t feel too bad. I sort of made it up on the spot, but I think, like Monopoly or Scrabble, it has a chance to become a craze.

Billy Beane on the A’s rush into contention — ‘I prefer to be a buyer’ (subscription)

TK: I’ve got some thought that you could really just set up for a big run in 2019. Is that possible — compete this year but plan mostly for 2019?

Beane: No, in our situation we’ve got to grasp every opportunity we can. In any sport, you can sit there, ‘oh well, we’re just going to wait,’ and it never arrives.

For us, until we have a different venue, we are going to be somewhat hand-to-mouth. The idea that we can sort of push off an opportunity because we think we’ll be better ...

Phillies Reportedly Increase Offer For Manny Machado

The Phillies have improved their offer to the Orioles for star infielder Manny Machado, reports Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (Twitter links). In recent days, the Brewers, Dodgers and Yankees have been categorized as the favorites to land Machado. However, Rosenthal suggests that while the Dodgers and Yankees have the strongest offers on the table, the Brewers are beginning to fade from the mix, while the Diamondbacks are, at this point, “on [the] periphery” of the market.

Dodgers’ Chase Utley, citing family, says he’ll retire at end of 2018

LOS ANGELES—Chase Utley will retire from baseball at the end of this season, capping a 16-year career that included a World Series championship with Philadelphia Phillies and an elder-statesman role with the Dodgers.

“I’m no spring chicken. My hair is going gray. There’s a lot of things letting me know it’s time,’’ Utley said.

The 39-year-old second baseman made his name with the Phillies, earning five All-Star berths and winning four Silver Slugger awards. He helped the team to a World Series ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-13-2018

Toledo News-Bee, July 13, 1918:

WALT JOHNSON ANOTHER RUTH

Walter Johnson is getting jealous of Babe Ruth. Inspired by the all-round skill of the Boston heaver, the Washington mound star went into center field on Friday and was a big factor in the win over Detroit. Johnson clouted a triple and a single and accounted for three of the Nationals’ five runs. He got a fourth himself.

Well, okay, so maybe he wasn’t exactly another Babe Ruth, but Johnson wasn’t shabby with a bat. He hit .246/.294/.369 ...
