Terry Collins says Mets may tab Michael Conforto to play in center

This doesn’t sound like a good plan.

Michael Conforto rejoined the New York Mets on Monday after a three-week stint in the minors. He may have returned as the team’s primary center fielder.

Zack Wheeler throwing bullpen sessions, sources say | Newsday

Zack Wheeler has been throwing bullpen sessions at the Mets’ complex in Port St. Lucie, according to multiple sources. They have yet to set a firm schedule, but the righthander’s progress signals that a minor-league rehab assignment could be approaching.

He has thrown off the mound three times, logging just under 30 pitches in his last session on Sunday. It’s an encouraging sign for Wheeler, whose comeback from Tommy John surgery has been derailed by setbacks. He likely will need a full ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-19-2016

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, July 19, 1916:

Chicago forfeited to Brooklyn [yesterday] by the technical score of 9 to 0, because Manager Tinker refused to leave the field when Umpire Byron ordered him away…[In the top of the tenth inning with the score tied 4-4,] Byron charged [Vaughn] with delaying the game, finally calling a ball, while the Cub pitcher held the sphere in his hand.

Manager Tinker voiced a violent protest and refused to leave the field, claiming that Brooklyn players were ...

The case for Kyle Schwarber to the Yankees and other trade rumors

Would the Cubs trade him for Miller and Chapman?

“Cash thinks he can hit 50 home runs there,” one source with knowledge of the Yankees’ plans said, and, well, that isn’t altogether farfetched. Schwarber is a 30-home run hitter in any park, presuming he comes back from the torn ACL that has sidelined him almost all of 2016.

The law of unintended consequences is always in play. Worth a read.

Report: Reducing MLB season to 154 games has ‘gained momentum’ - CBSSports.com

Maybe they should put a 10% or 15% across the board salary cut on the table to get it done.

According to David Lennon of Newsday, the idea of reducing the schedule to 154 games has “gained momentum” of late, as MLB and the MLBPA negotiate the new collective bargaining agreement. The current CBA expires on December 1, and there’s no indication a work stoppage is on the horizon, thankfully.

The biggest problem with reducing the schedule is the financial impact. Eight fewer games means four fewer ...

Cespedes’ new OF preference creates odd-man-out dilemma | New York Post

Who goes to the bench?

“I would rather play left field because I’m comfortable and also because it’s less work on my leg,” Cespedes said after going 0-for-3 with a walk in the Mets’ 5-0 victory over the Phillies. “If they give me the option I will stay in left field.”

Rays offense stalls again in loss to Orioles (w/ video) | Tampa Bay Times

Moore pitched a season-high 7⅓ innings. He had gone exactly seven five times. He allowed five hits and struck out only one because he pitched to contact against an aggressive lineup. Shortstop J.J. Hardy’s two-run homer in the second accounted for the Orioles’ runs.

“I tell you, Moore was as good as Tillman,” Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. “That was two good pitchers at the top of their game. Fine margin of error.”

OTP 2016 July 18: Girls’ softball teams being shut out of city defibrillator policy, while boys’ teams given life-saving devices

Youth softball coaches are furious that their predominantly female leagues have been left out of a city law that gives free defibrillators to youth baseball leagues.

That new law, which Mayor de Blasio signed in May, provides a free automated external defibrillator for baseball leagues who play on city fields in case a kid gets hit with the hard ball in the chest.

“The law should cover all sports,” said Peter DeMauro, a longtime youth sports coach who currently coaches girls’ softball ...

Wainwright more than all right in blanking Marlins | St. Louis Cardinals | stltoday.com

Wainwright referred to himself as “the laughingstock of the baseball world” for his 7.16 ERA at the end of April and struggles into May. He’s carved that down to 4.15. As he stood on the mound for the ninth – 11 pitches from a shutout – he made sure he saw where his 2006 teammates were in the crowd. He’s no longer the rookie they watched close their championship. He’s more complete.

Before every game, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle receives a number — an estimate of every player’s capacity to perform — from the strength and training staffs. The number is part of the decision-making process. The number is not a perfect guide, rather “a talking point,” Pirates head athletic trainer Todd Tomczyk said.

Down the stretch, the Orioles will lean on their prized young arms to help them get to the postseason.

Neyer: HAS THE VAUNTED OAKLAND A’S FRONT OFFICE BECOME TOO INSULAR FOR ITS OWN GOOD?

Back in 2002 or ‘03—in what might have been my last substantive conversation with him—I asked Beane what he thought about Boston Red Sox management’s apparent intention to build a sort of “baseball brain trust.”
I don’t remember Beane’s exact response. I do remember him suggesting the possibility of “too many cooks stirring the pot.” More than a decade later, Beane seems to feel the same way. “They’re very happy with the people they have,” the San Francisco Chronicle’s Susan Slusser says, ...
