Deadspin: Boras wants Harvey shut down after 180 IP

Boras wants to Strasburg Harvey.

Heyman’s latest article details the dispute that has arisen between Alderson and Boras over the health of Matt Harvey, who is anchoring a near-immortal Mets rotation and also happens to be one of Boras’s biggest clients. The two are at loggerheads over the number of innings Harvey has pitched. Boras believes his client, who is in the midst of his first full season since undergoing Tommy John surgery, needs to be shut down once he pitches 180 innings, for ...

Breaking tradition: Brewers reschedule fan appreciation night; Chicago Cubs may be to blame

“They all come up here thinking they own the place,” said fan Rachel Evanow.

“They come here in droves,” said another.

Brewers fans can’t stomach the idea of Cubs fans walking away with prizes intended for them.

“I hate the Cubs. The Cubs suck,” said Evanow.

And the Brewers agree—they’re breaking tradition and fan appreciation night is being moved two weeks earlier, to September 19th, against the last place Cincinnati Reds.

Bryce Harper’s bizarre night: four runs, zero swings and a little bit of history

Mostly posting because: “The only player to see more pitches and not swing in the last 10 years, according to ESPN Stats & Info, was Juan Uribe in 2010. His total was 21, one more than Harper’s.”

Juan Uribe would not have been my first, or 100th, guess.

Managing challenge that could ruin Yankees, Mets playoff hopes | New York Post

Luckily for the Nationals, their back-end relievers are well rested because Matt Williams doesn’t like to use them much. They will be better off even more in October, when they are home watching the Mets in the playoffs.

As Kiermaier emerges, should Rays seek long-term deal? | Tampa Bay Times

I like Kiermaier. I’m not sold on his value being this high based on on his defensive WAR. Among other issues, defensive WAR has the same problem as stats like RF/9 and RBI. It’s still far too dependent on opportunity. The current WAR systems are still too much of a mix of context-neutral and context-laden statistics to tell me whether a player is most valuable or the best player, two entirely different questions. In assessing value in a particular season, like in the MVP discussion, context is ...

Lincecum’s hip problem ends his Giants season, career up in the air - San Francisco Chronicle

How long have hip issues been a thing in MLB?

However, Lincecum’s two-year, $35 million contract expires after this season and the Giants clearly need a rotation makeover for 2016 and beyond.

Team trainer Dave Groeschner said Lincecum‘s surgery involved shaving down bone to take care of impingement and repair his labrum. Lincecum, who Groeschner expects to be ready to pitch in spring training. The pitcher will start rehabilitation Friday, staying in Colorado through weekend, then resuming ...

Metsblog:  Dominic Smith Named FSL Player of the Year

What am I missing about his season.  These look to me like the numbers of a non-prospect first baseman.

First baseman Dominic Smith of the High-A St. Lucie Mets has been named the Florida State League Player of the Year (Sept. 3).

Smith, 20, is hitting .305 with a .354 OBP and .417 SLG to go along with six home runs, 33 doubles, and 79 RBI in 118 games so far this season for St. Lucie.

Baseball’s Next Generation of Managers

Welcome back.

Gabe Kapler: Kapler currently serves as the Los Angeles Dodgers director of player development, his first year in the position. He spent 12 seasons in the big leagues after being selected in the 57th round of the 1995 amateur draft, a round that doesn’t exist anymore. Work ethic and determination to beat the odds to succeed was something Gabe never lacked. I witnessed this first hand as a teammate in Detroit and then again as a broadcasting partner at FOX.

In 2007, Kapler took ...

Jazayerli: A Dayton With Destiny

Who will play Dayton Moore in his “Moneyball”? Clooney?

In the span of time that Moore has been a GM, every team in baseball has improved its understanding of the mechanics of the game. Every GM today is better at his job than he was in 2006. Being a successful GM requires showing a willingness to learn new information on the job and adapt your processes accordingly.

Which leads me, as someone who has obsessed over Moore’s job performance since he was hired, to posit the following ...

Michael Conforto is the perfect player — just ask David Wright

The difference is talent.

Trading for Yoenis Cespedes changed the Mets’ world, but don’t underestimate what rookie outfielder Michael Conforto has meant to this club.

“If you were going to build a ballplayer with the right approach along with the right amount of talent, he’d be the guy,’’ David Wright told The Post.
“He’s not entitled.’’

That alone is a gift from the baseball gods in this day and age.

Someone Appears To Be Trying To Hoax The Marlins President Out Of His Job

About halfway through Ozuna’s stint in minor-league “jail,” rumors began circulating that there was a recording of some sort involving Marlins owner Jeffrey Loria and team president David Samson saying something awful about a player. The rumors were maddeningly vague. They also eerily predicted the contents of a brief audio file that was later emailed to us….

Then, out of the blue on Aug. 31, our tips email account received a 22-second audio file with the brief explanation that “it was ...

Bloop Hits: Warren Zevon and Bill Lee | FOX Sports

As fate would have it, “Bill Lee” marked a turning point in both of their careers. Though Zevon continued to write brilliant songs until he died, he never again approached the kind of record sales he achieved with “Excitable Boy” and “Bad Luck Streak,” in part because of his personal demons and his testy relationship with the music business. Lee never pitched another full season in the majors, his career compromised by injuries, the 1981 strike and his ...

The Race for Last Place

Who will win “The Biggest Loser”?

Miami (54-79, one game out). Other than Oakland and maybe Milwaukee, this was the team on this list that had the highest hopes for 2015 coming in, though, then again, this is Miami, so you never know. Regardless, once Giancarlo Stanton got hurt, this team became impossible to watch. I love Ichiro as much as anyone else, but seeing him play every day in an empty building with a fish statue would make anyone sad. The Marlins might have a little push left in them ...

Back to School: The Science Behind Toronto Flamethrower Marcus Stroman’s Rapid ACL Recovery «

I am shocked.

Marcus Stroman is starting tonight. For the Lansing Lugnuts, the Toronto Blue Jays’ A-ball affiliate, but still: He’ll be throwing baseballs to professional batters. Five months ago, that was something that no one but Stroman foresaw. And five years ago, the chronological realities of rehabbing from in-season surgery might have proven his prediction wrong. But Stroman’s is a special case, a partnership of personality and science that points the way toward the future of injury ...

Grant: Why Rangers prospect Joey Gallo struggled in Triple-A after first stint in majors | Dallas Morning News

“Hitters make changes based on what is comfortable or based on not having success,” Banister said. “Young hitters go through the phase where they have measured struggles that they’ve never had before and have the impulse that they have to fix something. Sticking to the process is the most difficult thing for every player to do when they have their first real struggle.

“All the things he went through, all of that has to happen for a young guy,” Banister added. “When they come out ...

Bat Flipping Draws Shrugs in South Korea But Scorn in America

In the United States, the bat flip exists on the abstruse list of behaviors considered rude and worthy of confrontation. In Korea, the flip is, well, just a flip. No one cares. This cultural variance, combined with the world-shrinking influence of social media, has created a disjointed international sports milieu in which players like Hwang have been celebrated, derided and deabted in a language they do not understand for a move they regard as involuntary.

Matt Williams Defends Bullpen Management.

“All these people want to know why Papelbon isn’t in the game because we lost,” Williams continued. “He’s our closer. He’s the one that closes the game.”

In his other life he’s a super hero called The Tautologist.

Notable Sept. 1 Callups - BaseballAmerica.com

That’s not good.

Miami Marlins

Most Notable: None. What happens if a team decides not to add any players for September? It may come close to happening in Miami. The Marlins have seven pitchers and two position players on the disabled list. They have not added anyone yet and with only two position players on the 40-man roster who aren’t currently on the big league roster and few healthy pitching options, they are unlikely to do much to change that.

—Honus Wagner, 1906-09 (four straight), also seven in nine years from ’03-’11

A little too late to save Ben Cherington.

“I think that for this year, this was the most consistent stuff I’ve had,” he said. “We moved the ball around well, and Blake [Swihart] called a great game back there. He and I were on the same page the entire night.”

The difference since his return, Porcello said, is in the renewed commitment to his sinker, the pitch upon which his success was predicated in Detroit. It may be confounding to understand how he got away from it so much in the first place, ...
