Winker earns AFL Player of the Week nod | reds.com

Although I’m already a walking zombie from watching late-night playoff games, I still wish some AFL game were available on television.

The Economist: The cult of the genius GM

In the wake of the Dodgers’ acquisition of Andrew Friedman, an argument that teams should never pay up for a general manager no matter how brilliant they are.

Informed decisionmaking in baseball is now essentially a commodity. If given the proper support staff and training, any writer for Baseball Prospectus or Fangraphs with the appropriate organisational and people-management skills could probably do a competent job…
The reason GMs make less money than players do isn’t because owners are ...

Fay Vincent Gets The Last Word | FOX Sports

“The problem is that most of the guys who were commissioner, I think, really don’t want to say anything because they’re inhibited,” he says. “Because I’m older and I don’t really give a damn, I am willing to take a point of view on it and tell you what I think. I’m not running for office, and I don’t particularly care what people say about me in the papers anymore.”

Toledo News-Bee, October 14, 1914:

Mrs. Ed Konetchy, wife of the Pittsburg Pirate first baseman, on Wednesday admitted that she engineered the deal by which Koney transferred his affections from the Pirates to the Pittsburg Feds. Koney, she said, is to receive $7,500 a year on a three-year contract. The Pittsburg Feds gave her $1,000 for persuading Konetchy to jump, she said. Hans Wagner will play first in Koney’s place next year.

Konetchy isn’t famous, but he was one of the better first basemen ...

Quisenberry led Major League relievers that season with 129 innings, his fewest innings in a four-year stretch.
“You have to protect those guys like Quiz from the grind they face,” Howser said. “They wear down, too.”
Much is made about starting pitchers and what the impact of the extra demands of a postseason can have on them. Relievers, however, face the same type of strain. They may ...

Report: Mets moving in fences at Citi Field again

This will be the second time the Mets have moved in the fences since the stadium opened in 2009. After the 2011 season, the Mets brought in the left field wall from 371 feet to 358 feet, right-center from 415 feet to 390 feet, and right field from 378 feet to 375 feet. While details of the upcoming changes aren’t yet known, they will be specific to the right field and right-center field fences.

I would hate the idea that my front office is spending time worrying about the dimensions of the ...

Return to New York? Yankees considering Omar Minaya for front office position

It’s not clear what role he would fill, but Boland notes that VP of baseball operations Mark Newman recently retired while longtime Yankee scout Gordon Blakeley left for a job with the Braves.

He certainly has done all he could do in his three seasons with the Padres.  I assume.  I mean, who knows?  If you told me with conviction that the Padres folded five years ago, I would probably believe you.

Mike Napoli to undergo facial surgery

The procedure, called bimaxillary advancement surgery, separates the front portions of the lower and upper jaw and moves them forward to allow for more room behind the tongue, reducing the chances of obstruction.

To combat sleep apnea.  This sounds deeply unpleasent.  And I certainly hope it does a little better than ‘reducing the chances’ for him continuing to have the issue.

Toronto’s Witness To Sports History Is Dead

He was known to most as “Ralph the Programme Guy”.  If you ever attended a sporting event in Toronto, you know who I’m talking about.  He was at nearly every game.  He was a fixture selling programmes at Jays games for years.  Ditto for the Leafs, Raptors, Argos and thousands of concerts, from The Beatles in 1964 to Black Eyed Peas last year.  If it was a big event,  Ralph was there.  And now, he’s dead at the age of 67.

[...]

Trying to calculate the number of events Ralph ...

Nine Managerial Decisions That Helped Decide Game 2 Of The NLCS | FiveThirtyEight

Jonah Keri breaks down a bunch of game situations by the numbers.

SITUATION: Top of the sixth, runner on second, two outs, Hunter Pence up, Cardinals lead 2-1. Who should pitch?

DECISION: Matheny leaves Lynn in to pitch to Pence.

THE MATH SAYS: This was also a judgment call. You’ve got those numbers in Lynn’s favor as a pitcher who often fares better as he gets deeper into games. The only reason the Giants had a runner on second is because, after Lynn fanned the first two batters of the ...

The difference between playoff champs and chumps - Beyond the Box Score

Read the article.

The central thesis of Keating’s article was that teams that have success in the playoffs generally do well against the better teams during the regular season, and those who don’t perform as well against better teams make early exits. He used this year’s Angels as an example, citing that forty percent of their wins came against the worst teams in the AL (Red Sox, Astros, Twins and Rangers) but were only 9-11 against the other division leaders. We already know how that turned ...

Bernie: Cards rally around Molina : Sports

The three homers merely were opening acts. In terms of delivering a heart-pumping moment, Wong struck the most timely and powerful blow of them all.

Wong’s memorable, instant-classic swing shattered a 4-4 tie and gave the Cards a 5-4 victory that cleared the debris of a Trevor Rosenthal blown save, set off a red-draped celebration and ended an evening of swerving, unnerving, dramatic turns.

NY Magazine: How Pro Sports’ Biggest Losers Became World Series Contenders

1. They started spending.
Royals owner David Glass had developed a reputation as a cheapskate, and for good reason. In 2011, the Royals had a payroll of just $38 million — less than a fifth of what the Yankees spent that year. (The Royals record in 2011? A weak 71–91.) In the seasons since, though, they’ve steadily raised that figure: from $64 million in 2012 to nearly $82 million in 2013 to $92 million this year. In 2014, their Opening Day payroll was a middle-of-the-pack 19th, ahead of ...

Adam LaRoche accepts that he must step aside to make room for Ryan Zimmerman

Adam Kilgore in the Washington Post-

... this October was likely LaRoche’s last ride with the Nationals — the last time the beloved teammate, dependable first baseman, genial outdoorsman and charitable man will wear a Nationals uniform. If the decision was his to make, in a vacuum, LaRoche would finish his career in Washington. He knows it is not, and he is okay with that.

Grant: Two role models for new Texas Rangers manager | Dallas Morning News

In the case of the Rangers’ managerial search, which is likely to be pared down to three finalists this week, the mentors — particularly Terry Francona and Clint Hurdle — loom very big. Both are models for what the Rangers want in their next manager. Both have taken two different organizations to the postseason. Both have been to the World Series.
Most importantly, they both have commanding presence, yet manage by inclusion.

Pair in Greinke trade coming up Royal in ballclub’s turnaround | FOX Sports

Hearing “hitterish” makes me wince.

Finally, I thought “hitterish” was a newfangled term created by baseball scouts. Nope. When I talked with Hall of Famer Brett in the Royals clubhouse after Game 2, he invoked the term in reference to the emergence of Mike Moustakas. He said the iconic hitting coach Charley Lau used the word during Brett’s playing career to describe batters who look like they’re going to get a hit every time they’re at the plate — even though we know that’s not ...
