As Pete Rose tries to steal attention, let’s appreciate Ichiro instead - Yahoo Sports

Even if he’s correct? Yes, Pete Rose is correct. Ichiro isn’t near his record. Nevertheless, what Ichiro has done is well worth mentioning and celebrating.

This will not fall down that wormhole of ignorance. This will be a rejoinder to it. Because even if Pete Rose is correct that the 4,257th hit of Ichiro Suzuki’s professional baseball career, laced down the right-field line on Wednesday afternoon, doesn’t place Suzuki in Rose’s all-time company because the first 1,278 came in Japan – and he ...

Mark Attanasio downplays trade rumors with Ryan Braun and Jonathan Lucroy

Are they actively listening?

“Much ado about nothing so far,” Attanasio said of the constant speculation that either Braun or Lucroy, or both, will be traded before the Aug. 1 deadline.

“We’re not actively out shopping either of these guys.”

Inside Baseball With Jon Heyman - Trouble In Los Angeles

You can’t take the long view when you are writing on a deadline. The Dodgers and Angels only similarity is where they play. They are two teams on different courses.

Royals move on from struggling second baseman Omar Infante, designate him for assignment

Would he still wear a Royals uniform when he starts the All-Star Game?

The Royals officially cut their losses with second baseman Omar Infante on Wednesday, designating him for assignment to clear room on the roster for left-handed pitcher Brian Flynn.

The move results in a significant amount of dead money for the Royals. Infante is still owed roughly 60 percent of his $7.75 million contract this season, which comes out to about $4.7 million. The Royals also are on the hook for $8 million ...

What kind of pitcher are Red Sox really in market for?

As I mentioned the other day. The Red Sox don’t need to make a deal for starting pitching right now.

If Price, Wright, and Porcello’s performances prove sustainable, then the Sox’ approach to the trade market may likewise end up being relatively modest. As much as Dave Dombrowski is known for big-splash trades such as his acquisition of Price at the trade deadline in 2014, he more frequently focused on mid-rotation names at past trade deadlines to considerable effect, most notably with Doug ...

David Wright has surgery, season is likely over - NY Daily News

After weeks therapy and oral and local medications, David Wright has decided to have surgery to repair the herniated disc in his neck. The surgery was scheduled for Thursday in California with Dr. Robert Watkins, the Mets announced Thursday morning.

While the Mets said there is no timetable for Wright’s return, the Mets captain’s season is effectively over.

WAMBSGANSS PICKS HIMSELF FOR BENCH

Fans are wondering what will happen when Manager Fohl finally decides to put Ray Chapman back in the Indian’s [sic] lineup—a thing which won’t happen, says Fohl, as long as the tribe is hitting its present great winning clip.

But Chappie’s going to get back there sooner or later, and then the rooters are guessing whether it’ll be Ivan Howard or Bill Wambsganss who’ll go to the bench for utility infield duty.

Fangraphs: The Knuckleball Is More Conventional Than It Seems

Eno Sarris questioning conventional wisdom about the knuckleball:

But once you peal (sic) back the layers on the pitch, you start to see that each truism about the knuckler isn’t necessarily true. In fact, there are probably more ways in which the art of throwing a knuckleball is similar to the art of throwing other pitches than it is different.

(I know a Steven Wright article just got posted. I think the more general discussion of knuckleballs here deserves its own thread.)

Angels activate Andrelton Simmons ahead of schedule - The Orange County Register

Good news for the Angels.

Simmons, who returned early from thumb surgery, made three difficult plays in his first game back, including one eye-popping backhand play in the hole.

“He made some tough plays look easy,” Manager Mike Scioscia said.

Simmons even had two hits and he drew a walk, an all-around good return for one of the many key players the Angels have lost to injury this season.

When Simmons tore the UCL in his left thumb on May 8 and had surgery on May 10, the initial prognosis ...

Red Sox knuckleballer deserves consideration as All-Star Game starter | Boston Herald

Wright has been impressive. He’s the next great knuckleballer.

“I just try to go out there and do everything I can to change speeds with the knuckleball,” said Wright, who fanned four, walked one and allowed three runs on six hits. “I feel like I can pitch three different knuckleballs at three different speeds, and then I use my fastball as much as I can, within reason. That’s one pitch I don’t want to get hurt on, but I try to go out there and do everything I can to make a quality ...

Yoenis Cespedes knows Cuban star’s talent better than anyone | New York Post

Gourriel hasn’t played at a high level of competition in a while. Thinking he can step in and help the Mets this year is probably far-fetched.

“At the time that I left that was the best ballplayer in Cuba,” Cespedes said through interpreter Melissa Rodriguez. “He is a five-tool player. When I was in Cuba we were best friends.”

The Mets need to make a serious run at the free agent. With David Wright likely heading to neck surgery, the Mets desperately need to find a solution to their ...

The rest of this season could make or break Joey Votto’s Hall of Fame case

Votto has had his detractors, people who don’t ascribe to sabermetrics, people who say he walks too much. Perhaps these people could knock Votto as well for the Reds not winning any championships during his career, though great players don’t always experience this. Until this season, Votto’s critics have mostly looked misguided…

Others needed their mid to late 30s to solidify their Hall of Fame cases or watch them collapse.

Take Hernandez, who looked like a Hall of Famer through his ...

Strat-O-Matic Baseball 365 review - Beyond the Box Score

Is anyone playing this game?

Final thoughts: Overall, I thought the game definitely had some appeal, especially the regularly-updating player cards. I didn’t get to play for a full 162-game season, but getting a whole season’s worth of stats to look at for every MLB player would be very interesting as well. However, the combination of the cost and the fact that it just wasn’t differentiated enough from fantasy baseball is what really drove me away from recommending this product. On the ...

New York Mets’ David Wright mulls surgery for herniated disk in neck - Mets Blog- ESPN

—New York Mets third baseman David Wright may opt for surgery to address the herniated disk in his neck rather than continue a conservative rehab process, general manager Sandy Alderson said Tuesday.

Wright has been on the disabled list since June 3.

The captain has spent the past week in Los Angeles with Dr. Robert Watkins, who previously had treated Wright for spinal stenosis in the lower ...

Baltimore Sun: Ubaldo Out, Gallardo In Orioles Rotation

Buck gives Ubaldo the boot to the bullpen as Gallardo returns from the DL.

As Orioles starter Ubaldo Jimenez struggled through May and slumped to the status of, statistically, the worst starting pitcher in the majors, his job remained his because the answer to any questions about a replacement was a question of its own: “Who else?”

Manager Buck Showalter on Tuesday finally had an answer. Right-hander Yovani Gallardo will return from the disabled list Saturday and start in Jimenez’s place ...

Mets must trade for Lucroy — even if it means giving up Wheeler - NY Daily News

Is it really panic time? Mets fans should be happy Harper isn’t GM. Travis is scheduled to come back in less than a week.

Yes, Travis d’Arnaud is on his way back from his shoulder injury, and he could provide some of the much-needed pop for the Mets’ offense.

But it’s clear that gambling on d’Arnaud staying healthy for months at a time is a longshot at best, especially now that he has had a problem with his throwing shoulder in addition to various other injuries.

As it is, d’Arnaud ...
