Sunday Notes: The Astros Changed Alex Bregman for the Good | FanGraphs Baseball

Earlier this week we ran a Players’ View that asked the question: Are Today’s Analytically-Inclined Players tomorrow’s GMs? Recently-retired outfielder Sam Fuld wasn’t among the people quoted, but he does have an opinion on the subject. Fuld shared the following shortly after the article went up:

“I do see an increasing role for former players in front offices. Over the last five to ten years, most teams have embraced the role of advanced metrics/big data/creativity, but this change ...

OTP 9 October 2017: Trump Tells Pence to Leave N.F.L. Game as Players Kneel During Anthem

Mr. Pence lavishly documented his early departure in a series of tweets and an official statement issued by his office. On Twitter, he declared, “I left today’s Colts game because @POTUS and I will not dignify any event that disrespects our soldiers, our Flag, or our National Anthem.”

While the vice president portrayed his decision as a gesture of patriotic principle, it had the distinct appearance of a well-planned, if costly, political stunt. He doubled back from a trip to the West ...

Not challenging hit-by-pitch only start of Joe Girardi’s problems

In Game 2 on Friday, Sanchez immediately pointed out the ball hit the knob of the bat, not Chisenhall’s hand. He told reporters after the game he yelled “Foul! Foul!” and replays show him looking and pointing toward the dugout, the universal sign for “challenge this.” Girardi did not challenge it. And after the game, Girardi said this:

“There was nothing that told us he was not hit on the pitch.”

Oops.

Baseball Joe Girardi, Upon Review, Offers a Rare Mea Culpa: ‘I Screwed Up’

Given a night of restless sleep — and after perhaps letting an excoriation from the news media (including from commentators on the YES Network, which is partly owned by the Yankees) sink in — Girardi ventured to the Bronx on Saturday, disassembled his standard defensive armor and offered up something unusual: a mea culpa.

“I screwed up,” he said.

“In hindsight, yeah,” he added. “I wish I would have challenged it.”

“Again, I screwed up,” he went on. “And it’s hard. ...

Diamondbacks GM Mike Hazen credits predecessors for playoff foundation

Byrnes praised Hazen’s ability to “thread the needle” by assembling a playoff team in a scenario complicated by a potentially narrowing window to win along with a challenging payroll situation.

“As much turnover as there is in the business, every new regime goes about assessing the assets they have and being smart about it, with players and otherwise,” Byrnes said. “It’s critical. It’s easy to repeal and replace everything, but you have to know when you have some good stuff ...

Nick Cafardo: Torey Lovullo brought love — yes, love — to the Diamondbacks’ clubhouse

“I wasn’t afraid to talk about the word ‘love,’ ” Lovullo said before the NL wild-card game on Wednesday. “You know, in baseball and sports we’re very macho people. We’re afraid to talk about it. So you’ve heard me say the word ‘love.’ I think that the guys use the word ‘love,’ and I think that we’ve developed a really special bond. So that was the first thing that I set out to do through my own actions and my own relationships, and I think that the guys caught on. ...

Michael Brantley becomes ‘common sense’ option at DH for Cleveland Indians after Edwin Encarnacion injury | cleveland.com

Brantley, whose inclusion on the 25-man postseason roster was a bit unexpected, says he feels comfortable already, despite playing in only two regular season games before Friday.

“I’ve been doing a lot before the series even started,” Brantley said. “Just making sure what I could handle and what I couldn’t. Make sure we had our limitations. Everything’s been going great, I’m very happy where I’m at right now.”

Astros’ ability to get two-strike hits causing fits for Red Sox in ALDS - Houston Chronicle

Back to the future. Is a better two strike approach the big new thing?

Hinch would not share exactly how the Astros teach pitch-recognition: “Some stuff we do behind the scenes to be able to recognize the difference between a fastball and a breaking ball, breaking ball and a changeup. So that’s about as far as I’ll go with you.”
...
“All of it,” Betts said. “They don’t strike out much. They put it in play a lot. One to nine, they can just bang. The way their lineup is built, I’m sure it’s tough ...

“At this point, I get it,” Utley said. “I hear jokes pretty much on a daily basis. We’ll be watching an old game from the ‘80s and guys will say, ‘Hey Chase, are you playing in that game?’ I take it in stride, but I can dish it back for sure—especially to guys that I’m in better shape than.”

Astros at leading edge of analytics and their success is proof positive

A lot of good stuff in this one.

“You’ve always got to be questioning what you’re doing well and working on the things you do poorly,” said Hinch. “If you’re on the back end, following these massive trends, whether the use of technology or the use of analytics, imagine how far out in front the other teams are. I think that intellectual curiosity and fear is what drives you to get better faster.”

A bigger ball for shorter games

I’ve not heard this suggestion before. Part of me thinks this is a good idea to combat the current issues but I worry that changing the size of the ball could have unintended consequences.

Chicago is ready to entertain the world’s series audience and actors today. The stage, while a trifle moist and muddy, is all set, and the big act will go on as per schedule.

It was Ferdie Schupp (Giants) vs. Eddie Cicotte (White Sox) in Game One of the 1917 World Series.

Cleveland Indians have a night where everything goes right—Terry Pluto | cleveland.com

The Indians look awfully tough to beat.

For the Cleveland Indians, it was a night for fans screaming until their throats were raw.

And for standing and stomping and waving red towels.

And for Trevor Bauer to throw 6 2/3 scoreless innings ... and then leave the game to a standing ovation.

Tip your cap, Trevor!

The Atlanta Braves are looking for a new general manager after John Coppolella resigned Monday. | The Telegraph

McGuirk is a little more than Shanks suggests.

Instead, Liberty has allowed Terry McGuirk, a longtime Braves executive who is not considered a baseball man, to have the final say. He, in turn, gave John Hart and Coppolella keys to the car, which has now resulted in an embarrassing conflict.

Coppolella is gone, and Hart should be, too. Hart worked side-by-side with Coppolella throughout the past three years, so to think he had no knowledge of the alleged violations is unrealistic. Plus, Hart ...

LAT: Reconstructing the Dodgers’ 2016 Game 5 NLDS Win Over Washington

An essay by Andy McCullough that many say is very good.

As Kershaw loosened up in the bullpen, a phone rang inside Friedman’s suite. It was a member of the training staff. “Kersh is going to see if he can get loose,” the trainer said. “And there was nothing we could do to stop him.”
