Sullivan: Quick Study: The Effect of Defense on a Low-Strikeout Staff

One area I have not seen quantified is the effect a good defense (such as that possessed by the Royals) might have when combined with a low-strikeout pitching staff. Would a good defensive team’s pitchers and defense record more outs and post lower ERAs than FIPs? Probably some, but also how much of difference would it actually make? I decided to perform a quick study to see if there was anything to my little theory.

Robinson Cano reportedly unhappy in Seattle, would like to go back to New York

Last week Andy Van Slyke made the news for, among other things, ripping Robinson Cano in a radio interview, claiming that he was lazy, loafed and ended up getting coaches fired in Seattle. There has been a ton of criticism of Van Slyke for saying that, and today John Harper in the Daily News offers several quotes from the Mariners’ former third base coach, Rich Donnelly, defending Cano and his work ethic.

Buried deep in that story, however, is this bit:

So maybe Van Slyke is just so bitter ...

Steven Van Zandt teams up with Yankees adviser for TV show

While Negron’s back story has been well-documented — as a teenager, he was nabbed by George Steinbrenner outside the old Yankee Stadium in 1973 for spray painting graffiti on its walls, only to have The Boss take Negron under his wing and steer him on a path away from trouble — Van Zandt was deeply moved by the story of the years-long friendship that developed between Steinbrenner and Negron.

“That whole thing is such a good example of what can happen. One person can make a difference ...

Bridgeport Evening Farmer, November 23, 1915:

It has been almost forgotten that Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis has a decision of moment to baseball in his hands, writes J.B. Sherian in the St. Louis Globe-Democrat.
It has been said that if Judge Landis’ decision declares Organized Baseball is a trust within the meaning of the Sherman anti-trust law that all contracts made by players with Organized Baseball clubs will be voided.
Good lawyers say that the judge’s decision will not have any ...

As a political science major in college, I had thoughts of getting into writing about politics. Baseball, however, grabbed hold of me and never let go. How was I to know that at this late date I would find a reason to combine the two interests?

Major League Baseball 40-man roster additions roundup | News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

Friday is deadline day, and for some prospects, it could be a very big day.

Friday marks the day on which Rule 5-eligible players must be added to their organization’s 40-man rosters in order to be protected from this year’s Rule 5 Draft, which will take place on Thursday, Dec. 10, at the Winter Meetings in Nashville.

Players are eligible for the Rule 5 Draft if they have not been added to a 40-man roster within five seasons of signing (if they were 18 or younger at time of signing) or ...

Dave Roberts is expected to be named manager of the Dodgers on Monday, according to multiple people familiar with the situation who spoke under the condition of anonymity because the hiring hasn’t been officially announced….Like Mattingly before him, the new manager probably will receive guidance from the front office on everything from lineup to bullpen decisions.

Many of the problems Mattingly encountered also remain, including expectations of a World Series championship. Only now, the ...

Nick Cafardo | Sunday Baseball Notes: Major league teams are closing in fast on game’s top closers - The Boston Globe

Melancon saved 51 games last season, and since the season ended, he has heard his name mentioned as a possible trade chip. Why would the Pirates trade such an important part of their team? Melancon’s performance the last three seasons should net him a sizable contract. And the Pirates just aren’t into those.

“It’s been part of my career in baseball,” said Melancon from his home in Houston. “I’ve been traded four times, so really I’ve been there and done it, and if it happens ...

Blue Jays acquire Jesse Chavez from Athletics

The Blue Jays have acquired right-hander Jesse Chavez from the Athletics in a deal that will send Liam Hendriks to Oakland, according to Ken Rosenthal of The deal is a one-for-one swap.

Rule 5 Draft Roster Deadline: Who’s Being Added

The 2014 Rule 5 draft was one of the best of all time, as 10 of the 14 players in the major league portion stuck with new teams. Two outfielders (Delino DeShields and Odubel Herrera) and one first baseman (Mark Canha) saw regular playing time and a number of pitchers (led by Sean Gilmartin and J.R. Graham) proved they were more than just players being stashed for the future. That list could eventually grow by one. Daniel Winkler spent most of the season on the disabled list recovering from ...

Marlins taking offers on Marcell Ozuna because Jeffrey Loria “can’t stand the guy”

Perhaps Fowler’s not at the forefront of this free-agent market, in general, but—especially now that Colby Rasmus has accepted the Astros’ qualifying offer—Fowler is at the forefront of the center-field market, in particular. There will be three games on Opening Day, not just one

Royals fans can wash down their hot dogs with the tears of Mets players.

Major League Baseball and ESPN just did something kinda cool. Rather than give us the one “Opening Day” game on Sunday night followed by a bunch of day games the next day, this year we’re going to get three games on the Sunday which opens the season and it’s going to get going at 1PM Eastern.

Here’s the schedule — for ESPN anyway — for Sunday April 3 and Monday April 4, just released:
