Jeremy Guthrie: Let’s Make International Baseball Awesome

Step 1: Use the World Cup as the model
The World Baseball Classic is great, but who wouldn’t want to see it go to the next level and approach the hype of soccer’s World Cup? Right now, the WBC takes place in March during spring training, so the best players in the world have a bunch of easy (and good) excuses for why they can’t participate. As commissioner of MLB, I want to grow the game globally by showcasing the sport and giving players from around the world the chance to compete ...

Royals Fans Upset at Being Served Moldy Hot Dogs

The quality of food they say they got at the concession stands on Buck Night was unacceptable. This comes just a month after a food safety manager was fired for allegedly speaking out against health violations at Kauffman Stadium.

Fans sent KCTV5 News dozens of pictures from Friday night’s game. One shows a normal stadium hot dog beside one of the dollar dogs. Fans weren’t happy with the blackened franks on soggy, discolored and squashed up buns. One photo even showed mold on the bun. ...Read More...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-21-2015

Milwaukee Sentinel, April 21, 1915:

Jack Pfiester, who was formerly a pitcher on the team of the Chicago Nationals, was a witness in his own behalf in the Circuit court [in Chicago] on Tuesday in the suit brought against the Western Union Telegraph company, seeking to recover $2,500 in alleged damages in connection with a telegram sent him by the Milwaukee baseball club. Pfiester charged that on May 3, 1912, a telegram from the Milwaukee club, reading: “Will give you $300 per month,” signed ...

TBL: Fan at Cubs-Pirates Taken Off on Stretcher After Foul Tip Hit Her Head Through Screen [UPDATE]

Scary. Very scary.

The Pirates-Cubs game Monday night was delayed in the top of the second inning for 23 minutes after a fan walking behind the home plate netting was struck by a foul tip off the bat of Starlin Castro. This one is very rough to watch and, fingers crossed, the fan is okay. The ball did not go through the netting, per reports. ...

UPDATE: The Pirates updated the fan’s status and said she was conscious and thanking the caregivers when taken to the hospital:

With suspensions looming, Royals hope to move on from ‘emotional’ series with Oakland | The KC Star

Sure.

The gesture was broadcast on the television screen inside Ned Yost’s office. Ejected from Sunday’s game, Yost witnessed Kelvin Herrera point to his head after throwing a pitch behind the back of Oakland third baseman Brett Lawrie. As a spectator, Yost experienced a reaction common to viewers across the country.

“You look at it, and you’re like ‘God, what’s he doing that for?’” Yost said.

Herrera received an ejection of his own, as one of five Royals tossed from Sunday’s ...

Cubs To Promote Addison Russell

Meh, we just got told Carlos Correa is a better version of A-Rod.

The Cubs will promote top infield prospect Addison Russell to the Majors, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports writes. It appears Russell, usually a shortstop, will play second base, where the Cubs have struggled this season.

Russell, 21, had been hitting .297/.308/.432 for Triple-A Iowa. He hit a combined .295/.350/.508 at the Class A+ and Double-A levels in 2014, spending part of the year in the Athletics’ system before they shipped him ...

WSJ: He’s a Perplexing Question to Bat Around.

The debate has been raging for years in the sandlot baseball league of New York attorney Brian Mangan. Seeking to settle it, Mangan tweeted a question on March 13: “Batting around—is that when all 9 hitters bat, or does the first guy need to bat twice?”

As a contributor to MetsBlog, a popular website, Mangan boasts a baseball-loving Twitter following. Dozens responded, their views divided about equally on whether it takes nine or 10 batters to bat around. Some of the answers included ...

VICE SPORTS: AGAINST ESPN’S K-ZONE, WHICH IS THE WORST

The centerfield camera sits at the center of this operation, and only its ubiquity keeps us from recognizing it as the miracle it is. With this shot, pioneered by NBC producer Harry Coyle in the middle of last century, anyone at home—or at the bar, or in line for takeout—can see the flight of a pitch better than all but a handful of people in the actual stadium. It makes what had been in the pre- and early-television days the work of conjecture or imagination—the particular break of a ...

Joe Buck has a truly awful suggestion about how to improve MLB broadcasts

A truly disgusting suggestion.

Over at SI Richard Dietsch has a piece in which he asked several broadcasters and media members about changes they’d make to sports broadcasts and reporting. Fox’s lead play-by-play guy said this:

Specifically to baseball, I would make players more accessible. There is no way networks can be able to talk to NASCAR drivers before they stuff themselves into the driver’s seat of a race car to go over 200 miles per hour while we are all forbidden to talk to ...

No surprise if you look at his home run totals.

Atlanta Braves lefthander Andrew McKirahan has been suspended 80 games for violating league’s performance-enhancing drug policy, FOX Sports Insider Ken Rosenthal reported Monday….

McKirahan was a Rule 5 pick acquired from the Chicago Cubs by the Miami Marlins. The Braves acquired him after the Marlins waived him in March.

You will notice that all my Museum of the Nice Player inductees are from the last 40 years or so. Bill Mazeroski would have been a good choice, but he’s in Cooperstown (and, to be fair, he probably had too much Hall of Fame support from fans anyway).

WEEI: O’s rip Buchholz for ‘forever’ pace on mound

“I wouldn’t say it’s mentally tough,” added Tillman. “It’s more physically challenging. I’ve been in that situation enough to prepare myself in the dugout to go back out to make pitches from the get-go. First ...

I can blow up right here, or I can just take it and walk to first base and let him get in trouble and let it get the better of him.
