Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-28-2016

Pittsburgh Press, November 28, 1916:

Weldon Wyckoff, a member of the Boston Redsox pitching staff, is the owner and manager of the leading taxicab service at his home in Williamsport, Pa. It is said that since the close of the big series the number of cabs in the service have been materially increased. Wyckoff, a former member of Connie Mack’s team, is a pitcher who has a world of stuff, yet has been unable to develop into a winner.

In 1915, Wyckoff led the American League in losses, walks, ...

Donald Trump’s tax plan could affect MLB free agency | SI.com

Some interesting info.

Jock Tax

In assessing state income tax variations in how teams pursue free agents, players’ representatives should consider the impact of “jock taxes.” As we have explained in other SI.com articles, a “jock tax” is a tax imposed by a state and municipality on the proportion of income attributed to athletes on visiting teams when they play games in that state or municipality. Put in its most basic form, a jock tax is an income tax levied on a visiting team’s ...

St. Louis Cardinals Rumors: Andrelton Simmons Should Be 2017 Short Stop | FOX Sports

Fanciful.

Can a deal be made to the Angels then?  I believe that a deal could be landed by offering Michael Wacha, Jaime Garcia, and Peralta and/or Matt Adams.  It might also take a sweetener like Luke Weaver.  Would Weaver be too much to ask?

While this might seem like too much to ask, it would not surprise me to see the Cardinals package Weaver plus some of these names to land Simmons and I would NOT mind that.

Peter Gammons: D-backs are in a decent position on Black Friday - GammonsDaily.com

The D’Backs need some stability.

Players who were Diamondbacks may be unfair when they tell people that the D’Backs are the team that hates players, but it’s the reputation. Think about it, then just let the front office you hired run the baseball end, while you work on the stadium and television and marketing deals. I mentioned to one of the most influential Red Sox officials that several Cubs front office members had told me they think Theo Epstein could be the CEO of almost any Fortune ...

OTP: 28 November 2016: Bud Selig reminisces about 1999 MLB trip to Cuba, meeting Fidel Castro

Once Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947, there was a small window where it was somewhat easier for Latin players to make the transition to las Grandes Ligas. But that all changed when Castro overthrew the Batista regime and took control of Cuba in 1959.

Luis Tiant, the star pitcher for the Indians and Red Sox and who pitched for the Yankees as well, never returned to his native Cuba after the 1961 failed Bay of Pigs invasion. Tiant, now 76, was playing in Mexico at the time of the ...

Verlander and Buxton lead 2016 Statcast team | MLB.com

C—David Ross, A Pitcher’s Best Friend
If you watched the postseason at all, you know that Jon Lester’s inability to throw to first base or prevent runners from taking huge leads was a big story for all of October. But you also noticed that Lester wasn’t being victimized by stolen bases nearly as badly as you’d think. Why? A big part of that is due to the skill of Lester’s personal catcher, the now-retired Ross.
We’re specifically talking about exchange time, which is the time from when the ball ...

After $1 billion in player spending, Dodgers under MLB mandate to cut debt - LA Times

The Dodgers, who have spent more than a billion dollars on player payroll in the first four seasons of Guggenheim Baseball Management, face a mandate to reduce debt in order to conform to Major League Baseball rules.

The club is expected to reduce payroll for a second consecutive season, with the goal of cutting from about $300 million in 2015 to closer to $200 million in 2018.

Nick Cafardo: What are the sticking points in baseball’s CBA talks?

This makes no sense at all.

I vote for steroid guys who I believe are Hall of Famers (Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens). I believe Manny Ramirez is Hall-worthy, too, but he will not get my vote because of his repeated violations. The only thing I wrestle with is that Manny never tested positive until the final act of his career. I expect Jeff Bagwell and possibly Tim Raines to be elected this year. First-time nominee Ivan Rodriguez should reach in his first ballot, but suspicion of PED use will ...

Heyman - CBA Talks Back On As Deadline Looms

Some on the players side also would prefer that first-year draft allotments are done away with so that the very top players, such as Kris Bryant a few years ago, can get closer to their true market value. Bryant received $6.7 million as the No. 2 pick of the Cubs, less than half the $15 million Stephen Strasburg got under the old system. But even a generous reading of the losses there pales compared to the qualifying offer system that MLB already has offered to eliminate.

Goodbye to All Them: The Players Who Quietly Retired in 2016

Chone Figgins started out as a utilityman, too, but he became so much more. Drafted as a shortstop, he moved second base in the minors, and in his rookie year, 2003, he played second, short, left and center. The following year, he was switched to third, a position he had barely played as a professional, and he wound up spending more time there than at any other position in his career, though he received more than 190 starts each at second and in center, and more than 15 starts at shortstop and ...

Why Jean Segura Won’t Regress In Seattle

Someone shares the Mariners’ hope.

It’s hard to fathom why the Mariners would deal a starting pitcher with as much promise as Walker has, especially when his 2016 struggles can be attributed to his foot issues, which were addressed with surgery in October. It’s even more difficult to understand, given how tight the starting pitching market is this offseason, until you consider that defense was the Mariners’ biggest weakness this past season. Their shortstop defense, in particular, was one ...

Giants have considered trading for Pablo Sandoval | Boston Herald

I don’t really see the point of just dumping him. He’s not star but he’s a serviceable, usable player when healthy and in decent shape. Bring him in, try to rebuild some of his value and *then* trade him if Moncada or Devers is ready.

At least internally, the Giants have considered a reunion with third baseman Pablo Sandoval, a baseball source told the Herald.

How motivated the Red Sox should be to trade Sandoval depends on two other questions: how well do they believe the third baseman can ...

The Braves steal Sean Rodriguez - Beyond the Box Score

Ronnie Socash like Sean Rodrigues. He really likes him.

Moving forward to 2017, the Braves secured someone they could plug in at second base and immediately see top-level production. Through the adjustments he made in his swing, Rodriguez could be considered a 20 home run threat for at least 2017. If he continues to provide the above-average defense he’s known for, Rodriguez could provide the type of value that will make him the free agent bargain of the offseason.

“He’s progressing at an advanced rate,’’ the scout said. “The more you see him, the more impressed you are with his ...

Rumors And Rumblings - Pitch Framing Gets You Paid

What can the Cubs get for Soler?

While there is a lineup spot open for Bird in New York, it seems that outfielder Jorge Soler is not a fit with the Chicago Cubs.

Soler’s best chance for playing time in 2017 is likely to be the short side of a platoon in left field with left-handed-hitting Kyle Schwarber. Jason Heyward and Albert Almora Jr. are likely to platoon in center field while Ben Zobrist would be the everyday right fielder and Matt Szczur would serve as the fifth outfielder.

If the ...

Shortstop—Franklin Barreto, Midland (119 games), Nashville (four games): While scouts grade Barreto’s speed as average, the A’s top prospect contradicted that notion by stealing 30 bases to lead Oakland Minor Leaguers. But after also being caught stealing 17 times, Christenson sees plenty of room for improvement.

“He definitely has above-average speed. I think he’s a daring baserunner. He’s trying to figure out when is the best times for him to run,” the manager said. “I think that’s the main ...

Kelly: Tim Raines is a poster boy for sports injustice, but his snub doesn’t deserve our obsession - The Globe and Mail

Let me spend time writing about something too dumb and not important enough to discuss. Really?

What’s dispiriting is how complicit smart people are in their own dumbing down. Play sports, watch sports, talk sports, care about sports. That’s all great. But not if you begin to think that sports and how they turn out explains something vital about your culture. They only do that if you choose not to pay attention to anything else.

Roid rage, an outburst of temper, is a byproduct of steroid use. Belle was always mad at somebody. If he wasn’t cursing at reporters, he was taking a bat to the postgame meal or a teammate’s boom box. Fury always seemed to be close at hand with Belle.

After he retired, Belle was asked if he ever used steroids. He said simply, “No, I was just an angry black man.”
