Bloop Hits: Warren Zevon and Bill Lee | FOX Sports

In retrospect, it makes perfect sense that Lee and Zevon should have gravitated toward each other. Born less than a month apart (Lee on Dec. 28, 1946, Zevon on Jan. 24, 1947), both men spent substantial portions of their formative years in Southern California; Lee made his college pitching debut for USC in early 1966, just a few months before Zevon’s first single – “Follow Me,” a duet with Violet Santangelo that was issued under the groovy mid-60s alias Lyme and Cybelle – was pressed ...

MLB hopes to add excitement on season’s final day with simultaneous starts

With five playoff spots in each league, there is a good chance that a race or two extends to the last game of the season. In an effort to amplify the drama, Major League Baseball has scheduled every game on the final day of the regular season to start at the same time.

No longer will players squirm anxiously in the clubhouse, waiting to see whether their playoff fate will be decided before they can take the field. Instead, MLB has set up what could be the ultimate day of scoreboard watching.

Fangraphs: Diving Into First Base: Maybe Not Crazy

Most of us have been taught that running through the bag is unequivocally faster than diving into it. Those who dive into first base are often ridiculed for doing so, risking injury to themselves while simultaneously making themselves less likely to beat the throw. However, a new way of thinking about the physical effects on the runner as he dives through the bag — pioneered by the father/son duo that make up “Baseball con Ciencia” — shows that the diving runner could close the distance ...

Rethinking Pete Rose’s reinstatement | FOX Sports

So how long ago did Rob make up his mind about Rose?

We’ve had this discussion many, many times here on the site. Nothing has changed about the situation.

Pete Rose, like every other player for years and years and years, knew that betting on baseball would make him “permanently ineligible”. How did he know? This is posted in EVERY clubhouse, “Any player, umpire, or club official or employee, who shall bet any sum whatsoever upon any baseball game in connection with which the bettor has no ...

Brady Aiken Leaves Start Early - BaseballAmerica.com

That doesn’t sound good.

Lefthander Brady Aiken, pitching for IMG Academy’s postgraduate team for the first time this spring, left his start with an apparent injury after making just 12 pitches and getting two outs.

Neyer: I have seen Pat Venditte and He was glorious.

The bottom of the seventh inning ended, Venditte trotted in from the bullpen—his arrival trumpeted by the nine-year-old boy running loose in my row—and at 3:42 Mountain Standard Time, I finally saw Pat Venditte throw a real pitch to a real batter.

March Sadness: Understanding the True Cost of the Spring Tommy John Surge

March, more than any other, is the month pitchers fall apart. And while April is the next riskiest, it’s also a distant second, so a team whose staff escapes spring training unscathed has reason to celebrate.

Spring training, formerly dismissed as insignificant in analytical circles, is enjoying a revival in 2015. And now we have strong evidence that March is a make-or-break month for team health, the origin of more than a quarter of the cases of a dreaded type of season-ending surgery. How ...

ESPN: Examining the state of baseball

Illegal streaming hurts Max Scherzer.

Next time you think about tuning in to your local regional sports network for a game, remember that you could be helping your team pay for the free-agent contract of David Price, Jordan Zimmermann or Matt Wieters. Local deals average more than $60 million in annual revenue per team—that’s a full 25 percent of revenue (and at least one or two big free-agent signings).

But a revenue problem looms, if cable’s bundling packages fade away and subscribers can ...

What’s A Yard Goat? It’s A Baseball Team Coming To Hartford

At least its not the Yard Goatse.

The team held a “Name the Team” contest that drew close to 6,000 submissions. Two weeks ago, the team announced a list of 10 options that was cut to five a week later.

After much chatter both locally and nationally, the team’s naming committee — owner Josh Solomon, general manager Tim Restall, consultant Chuck Domino and a California sports branding and marketing company — picked the name that ignited the most buzz, much of it mocking.

So the franchise ...

Pederson letting play make case for starting job | dodgers.com

I’ve seen him play a lot this spring. His defense is better than I realized. I’d be shocked not to see him start the season in centerfield for the Dodgers.

“We think Joc’s really good defensively,” Mattingly said. “He gets good jumps on the ball. He’s shown us that he knows where to throw it. As far as game awareness, outs and situations, he’s been good.

Hale discusses state of the D-backs | dbacks.com

Hale: I think the toughest thing is what we’re going to do with Yasmany Tomas. Will he be at third or in the outfield? And then even there, we have so many good outfielders. I think that’s one of our issues. [Jake] Lamb has played well. He hasn’t played great where we can just say, ‘Yas, we don’t need you.’ We’ve got Drury, too, who is waiting in the wings. We’ve got [David] Peralta, [Ender] Inciarte, [Mark] Trumbo, [A.J.] Pollock in the outfield. I think it’s a tough decision, and it could be ...

Second base really is wide open:
And I’m not really sure if that’s good. Thing is, none of the three candidates for the everyday role have really stuck out. Grant Green (7-for-23) hasn’t looked comfortable defensively, Josh Rutledge (7-for-31, eight strikeouts) hasn’t hit and Johnny Giavotella (5-for-20) hasn’t done anything to wow you on either end. There’s throwing the ball down between innings. He said he felt a little .. achy-ness, with a couple, maybe two out of seven throws. I think we don’t want it—and Matt doesn’t want it—to mushroom into something bigger than hopefully it is.”

Some NL exec would start a team with Adam Jones over Mike Trout

The story: asking various executives which player they would choose to build a team around. Most execs chose Mike Trout or Clayton Kershaw, which makes sense. Some chose Andrew McCutchen, which, sure, why not? Others went with young prospects or decided that it was most important to build around certain positions like shortstop or catcher…

But there is one exec — a general manager no less! — who made a choice and a justification therefor which is impossible to get one’s head around:

No Pitcher Has Thrown As Many Pitches Over as Few Innings as Zack Wheeler This Millenium

I found only 8 pitcher-seasons where a pitcher in his 20’s has thrown more than 3,200 pitches in less than 190 innings ... No pitcher has gotten less from more pitches than Zack Wheeler in the last decade. No pitcher, not one, has been pushed to throw as many pitches over as few innings as Zack Wheeler over the last decade (expanding the sample to 2005 includes Gil Meche, who retired early, Scott Kazmir, who fell apart and lost velocity, and Brad Penny). Here’s the decade-long list:

Don’t underestimate Ryan Howard’s value. | SportsonEarth.com : Anthony Castrovince Article

Howard is not, will not be and arguably never was the guy worthy of a $125 million extension in 2010, and the Phillies acknowledged as much in trade talks this winter, telling (uninterested) teams they’re willing to swallow a significant sum of the $60 million still owed to Howard over the next two years. Word is, the team would be willing to take on somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 million.

New Commissioner Rob Manfred, who visited Indians players Tuesday morning, said the situation has convinced him for the need of a worldwide draft. Manfred talked about that and several other subjects Tuesday.

Manfred believes MLB leveled the playing field regarding the amateur draft in the last negotiations with the players association when a slotting system was introduced for the first 10 rounds of the draft.

“It re-established the principal purpose of the draft, in that the weakest team had ...
