HR Derby to feature brackets, timed rounds

Instead of a set number of “outs” per round, each player this year will have five minutes to hit as many home runs as possible. A running clock will begin counting down upon release of the first pitch, though it will stop for any home run hit during the final minute. The clock will stop immediately after those home run balls land and will not begin again until a non-home run ball lands or the batter swings and misses.

Rookie League manager leaves bullpen off lineup card, has to use position players in relief

Rivera sent out left-hander Seth Davis to take over in the fifth. Before Davis could face his first batter, plate ump Jeb Bennett called a halt to the proceedings…

“I saw that (Davis) wasn’t listed on the lineup card ... the number ... I don’t know their players’ names,” said Bluefield manager Dennis Holmberg.

“It’s a tough situation, but the umpire caught it. I looked at my lineup card and said ‘What’s his number?’ But he would have caught it anyhow. That’s their job,” he said.

Sean Conroy becomes baseball’s first ever openly gay professional player

Who’s next?

Sean Conroy has become baseball’s first ever professional to come out as gay.

The 23-year-old pitcher, who plays for minor league Californian team Sonoma Stompers, has said he wants to be an example for other players.

‘It’s not that I wanted it to go public, but I didn’t care if it was open information. It’s who I am,’ he said.

Mark McGwire, Barry Bonds, and Alaska’s 110-Year-Old Twilight Baseball Game

The state’s most famous baseball tradition is the Midnight Sun Game, played annually on the summer solstice in Fairbanks, home of the Alaska Goldpanners, the world’s northernmost baseball team. First pitch each year is at 10:30 p.m., more than two hours before official sundown; as the sub-Arctic sun ducks below the horizon, the game continues in dim twilight, without the aid of artificial illumination. By the late innings, the sky is bright enough to get wood on a fastball, but dark enough ...

Cole Hamels ‘open-minded’ to all potential trade destinations | Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. and club president Pat Gillick have been listening to offers on Hamels for months. They have made it clear that they are ready to pull the trigger when they get one they like. By contract, Hamels has already conceded to accept a trade to nine clubs. He can veto 20 other destinations -– but that doesn’t mean he necessarily would do that.

“I have not been approached,” he said. “When I’m approached, then I can make a decision and provide an ...

Bob Costas tells News he owes Cubs’ Pedro Strop an apology - NY Daily News

“The tone of it was not what I intended. I intended it as a kind of sarcastic comment about this overall thing where everybody seems to be pointing toward the heavens for every accomplishment, large and small, or even for no accomplishment at all,” Costas said. “I inadvertently appeared harsh toward Strop. That wasn’t my intention. And so

I owe him an apology. And I will apologize to him (on Sunday).”

Marlins slugger Stanton out 4-6 weeks with broken bone in hand | FOX Sports

The Miami Marlins slugger has a broken left hand, which is expected to sideline him four to six weeks. He was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Saturday and will meet with a hand specialist.

Stanton, who grimaced as he swung and missed for strike three Friday night in the ninth inning of the Marlins’ 7-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, said the injury became worse as the game progressed.

“We’re hoping that it will be the quickest course possible, but certainly not great news when you ...

Max effort: Scherzer dominates in 100th win | MLB.com

Six days after pitching a no-hitter against the Pirates, Scherzer retired the first 16 batters he faced. He had a chance to join Johnny Vander Meer as the only pitchers to throw consecutive no-hitters.

“It’s so hard. It takes luck. You have to be on point. You make mistakes, they have to mishit it,” Scherzer said. “I made a few mistakes early. They hit some balls hard. Fortunately, they were right at people.”

With one out in the sixth inning, however, Phillies shortstop Freddy Galvis then ...

Pitcher Chris Ellis having breakthrough season in Angels’ minor league system - The Orange County Register

A discussion of some of the Angels prospects, including something positive about Kaleb Cowart.

Servais also said the organization is pleased with the progress shown by former No.1 prospect Kaleb Cowart. Cowart, whose career stalled with two bad years at Double-A, started this season at Class-A, but the third baseman went up to Triple-A when Kyle Kubitza was promoted to the majors. Cowart hit .279 with a .941 OPS in his first 14 games at Triple-A.

Servais said the Angels stopped trying so many ...

Abrupt exit, more questions

The situation in Philadelphia sounds ###### up.

The result was a remarkable press conference that featured a stunned general manager, a silent president, and a gigantic elephant invited by the outgoing manager and ignored by the other two men. When asked one of the most basic questions regarding situations like these - who will be in charge of hiring Sandberg’s ...

Q&A with Twins general manager Terry Ryan

FSN: As far as the decision to bring Buxton up from Double-A, plenty goes into that move. Was that a tough call to make?

TR: “Yeah, it is a tough call because you always want to make sure a guy can handle this situation and this level. I don’t think there’s any question just in the short amount of time he’s been up here that he’s shown he can field it, he can throw it and he can run. GM: Mets willing to ‘overpay’ for hitter, but nothing available - Mets Blog - ESPN

General manager Sandy Alderson insisted that he is willing to “overpay” to acquire a bat to aid the New York Mets, but there simply is nothing to bid on right now.

“I would characterize us as somewhat aggressive,” Alderson said Friday. “… Are we prepared to overpay? Me, personally, yeah, I’m prepared to overpay. But there has to be something to overpay for.

“You get to the point where you’re prepared, based on the short term, to maybe do a little more than you’d otherwise ...

Brett Anderson Pitches Dodgers Past Slumping Marlins 7-1 - The New York Times

Brett Anderson has made 15 starts without exploding!

Brett Anderson tied a career high with 10 strikeouts and allowed only one fly ball in seven innings Friday night to help the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 7-1 victory over the Miami Marlins, who lost their fifth straight game.

Giancarlo Stanton may be hurt, though.

Stanton winced as he swung and missed for strike three in the ninth. He said he hurt his hand earlier in the game, and the injury progressively became more painful.

Tyson Ross on His Walk Rate | FanGraphs Baseball

Interesting.

Yeah, Ross noticed that. “Hitters are just a little more patient with me. The slider maybe isn’t as enticing for guys to chase, or maybe they’re just more aware of it, and they’re just trying to lay off it, and I find myself behind in counts more.”

The difference here is bigger. Ross has lost around 35 swings on pitches outside of the zone this year. And, given his out-of-zone contact rate, that means he’s lost 24 strikes. Turn 24 strikes into balls, and you’ll see ...

The Boston pitcher contributed to the home team’s triumph by hard hitting and fair pitching, while Caldwell’s portion was poor pitching.

Polite and persistent: How Bobby Evans became the Giants’ GM - Giants Extra

This is a GREAT feature on Bobby Evans and his path to the GM job.

“In his sleep, he can do what’s needed as far as contracts and roster management,” Sabean said. “The next step is to become more immersed on the player personnel side. That’s acquired knowledge, and he didn’t come up through the field side. His biggest hurdle will be relationships — with Boch, with the major league staff, with players, because you are involved on a day to day basis. He has to be first and foremost ...
