Pitching-deficient Yankees re-sign Chris Capuano

In a move about desperation, depth or both, the Yankees reached agreement Tuesday with Chris Capuano on a one-year, $5 million contract.

Capuano was a stopgap measure when the Yankees obtained him last July 24, and nothing has really changed. He would be in the rotation in 2015 for the same reasons he was in 2014 – because so much had gone wrong.

Actually, that is already the case. Capuano is currently part of a group with David Phelps and Adam Warren that will be in contention for the Nos. ...

Rays trade Matt Joyce to Angels in exchange for Kevin Jepsen

The Rays traded outfielder Matt Joyce to the Angels on Tuesday in exchange for reliever Kevin Jepsen….

Joyce, who was an All-Star in 2011, spent six of his seven seasons in the majors with Tampa Bay. He heads to Los Angeles with a .250/.342/.441/.783 slash line in 725 career games. Joyce has a .104 average, one home run and seven RBI in 19 games at Angel Stadium.

Jepsen is 13-18 with a 3.94 ERA over seven seasons for the Angels. He had a career-high 75 strikeouts in 65 innings in 2014, ...

Jed Lowrie signing: Looking back at the Astros trade that sent Lowrie to Oakland

A good analysis of a “win-win” trade. Houston is going to end up with more total value from the Lowrie trade, but the A’s got value concentrated in two years when it helped them reach the playoffs.

Padres Sign Brandon Morrow

The sun will come up to Morrow.

The San Diego Padres have agreed to terms with free agent right-hander Brandon Morrow on a one-year deal, an industry source told Sportsnet.

Morrow will earn a base salary of $2.5 million plus incentives, according to Corey Brock of MLB.com, who first reported the deal. After years in the American League East, Morrow will now pitch one of the National League’s most pitcher-friendly stadiums, Petco Park.

Morrow, who pitched for the Blue Jays from 2010-2014, ...

Rumors, rumors, every where, nor any drop to drink

Maybe if he was 14, he’d have more success.

Because what’s the point of the Winter Meetings without getting your very own scoop? It’s like spending the week at Disneyland without going on a single ride. I sidled up to an agent in a bar on Sunday night—scouts say I’m a 60 sidler, 70 potential—and told him my dream. If a minor deal fell into his lap, he agreed to consider the possibility of maybe texting me, no promises. Walking back through the lobby, there were reporters zipping around, ...

The Marlins are close to signing Mike Morse

Wonder what they can get for him when they trade him next winter.

Ken Rosenthal reports that the Miami Marlins are close to signing outfielder Mike Morse. Others are reporting that it’s a two-year deal.

Morse spent 2014 with the Giants, hitting .279/.336/.475 with 16 homers and 61 RBI, playing outfield and some first base and helping the Giants to the World Series title. He spent the 2013 season with the Mariners and Orioles.

Peter: Accident or Suicide?

Worth reading all the way through.

NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas—Detective Juan Guerrero pulled back the yellow blanket that covered Brad Halsey, a 33-year-old former major league pitcher. He inspected the cold body found at the base of a 100-foot cliff on private property near the Guadalupe River, about 30 miles northeast of San Antonio.

No cuts or scratches. No sign of a struggle. No evidence of homicide, the detective concluded. Both legs looked broken, he noted, likely caused by the impact of a ...

Dodgers sign Brett Anderson for $10 million

Having paid the Marlins to take right-hander Dan Haren off their hands the Dodgers have replaced him in the rotation with left-hander Brett Anderson.

According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com it’s a one-year deal worth $10 million in guaranteed money, plus $4 million in potential incentives. Haren had one year and $10 million remaining on his contract when the Dodgers shipped him and the money to cover his entire salary to Miami.

Wow, a million dollars per start?

Astros and Nix, a top draftee whose deal was canceled, reach settlement

The Astros and unsigned pitching draftee Jacob Nix have quietly and confidentially come to a monetary settlement over the team’s decision not to follow through on an agreed-upon $1.5-million deal with Nix that was negotiated but never signed following last June’s first-year player draft.

Nix and the Astros by all accounts had the agreement, but in a very unusual case, the Astros decided they couldn’t sign the deal with Nix after they failed to sign No. 1 overall pick, lefthander Brady Aiken. ...

The Yankees will have to double down on spending, even if they don’t want to - Pinstripe Alley

The team obviously likes Scherzer, so it’s no surprise if they signed him just because they thought he was a great player. But the team finds themselves in a tricky position where a major signing would send them into the realm of postseason contention. And as one can see on the above graph, that is the point of the highest slope. It’s obviously a massive gamble, but a successful season from Scherzer and other possible signings (like Headley, for example) would pay dividends. If the team was ...

Bryce Harper, Nationals avoid grievance hearing after settling on 2015 salary [UPDATED] - The Washington Post

Outfielder Bryce Harper and the Washington Nationals will avoid a grievance hearing over his 2015 salary after the sides reached a settlement Sunday evening with a two-year, $7.5 million contract, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Harper and the Nationals had been at odds over how his salary would be determined because of a rare dispute over the contract he signed as a first-round draft pick in 2010. If the sides had not settled, the Nationals and their most recognizable ...

Major League Baseball teams always wonder if they did enough in offseason - Sports - The Boston Globe

As I’ve said a few times, the Red Sox don’t *need* an ace. They want one. Teams with *needs* sometimes do stupid things. I’d rather the Sox show patience and wait for the right deal, even if that deal doesn’t come for a while.

The Red Sox lost out on Jon Lester and Andrew Miller, but traded for Wade Miley and Rick Porcello, and signed Justin Masterson. Good going, but the Red Sox need an ace. They also need a lefthander in the bullpen, a strong setup man. While they bolstered their lineup with ...

A Speck on the Map Gushes Talent Curaçao Becomes Unlikely Supplier of Major League Players

The soil here is not particularly arable, but those little rocks have helped produce some of the most talented middle infielders in baseball, softening their hands and honing their reflexes to react to the most unexpected of bounces.  One of them, Didi Gregorius, will most likely succeed Derek Jeter as the Yankees’ shortstop. Others include Andrelton Simmons of the Atlanta Braves, considered by many baseball’s best defensive shortstop, and Jonathan Schoop, the second baseman of the ...

NY Times: A Speck on the Map Gushes Talent - Curaçao Becomes Unlikely Supplier of Major League Players

An autonomous country that is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Curaçao is a windward sliver of an island about 40 miles off the northern coast of Venezuela. NY Times: Sy Berger, Who Turned Boyhood Heroes Into Brilliant Rectangles, Dies at 91

Mr. Berger introduced Topps cards in 1951. They came with taffy, rather than chewing gum, because a competitor seemed to have exclusive rights to market baseball cards with gum. But the taffy wound up picking up the flavor of the varnish on the cards.

“You wouldn’t dare put that taffy near your mouth,” Mr. Berger said, adding, “that ’51 series was really a disaster.”

A year later, after switching to gum, he conceived the prototype for the modern baseball card, supplanting the ...
