Report: Addison Russell to play 2B for the first time

Because La Stella is putting them through hell-a.

Here we go.

Maybe the Addison Russell watch can start a little sooner than we think.  According to Carrie Muskat, the Cubs “other” elite prospect will be playing 2B and batting 2nd for Iowa…

We could downplay this but in recent Cubs history under this front office, a change in position has often signaled that a promotion is at least under consideration in the near—not distant—future. Could that be the case with Russell as well?

Maybe. But ...

Happy 50th Houston Astros — formerly ‘Colt .45s,’ almost ‘Stars’

Ruh-roh, George!

How and why they became “Astros” requires some explanation.

In a nutshell, the name change was precipitated by a licensing dispute between the ballclub and the Colt Firearms Company.

An AP story from October 21, 1964 stated that:

“It was understood that the Colt Firearms Co. has no objection to the baseball club using its name, but is objecting to the baseball club sub-licensing to manufacturers the right to use the name on novelties and souvenirs sold at baseball ...

Look out Refsnyder: Yankees interested in Braves’ 2B prospect

Yankees attempting to use an Atlanta fire to their advantage… again…

The Yankees have let the Braves know they have an interest in Atlanta’s second-base prospect Jose Peraza who is currently playing at Triple-A.

According to a person with knowledge of the situation the Yankees made contact with the Braves and sent scout Dennis Twombley to Gwinnett, Ga. recently to watch Peraza, who turns 22 on April 30.

Baseball America ranked the 6-foot, 165-pound native of Venezuela as the 54th best ...

Teams across MLB honor Jackie Robinson’s ‘eternal’ impact | MLB.com

“My dad, he loved Jackie Robinson,” DeShields Jr. said. “Growing up, [Robinson] was always an impactful person to me because of my mom and dad. It was something they wanted me to follow and hear about. He was the first African-American to play, he gave me the opportunity to play, the people before me and the people after me. He did a lot of remarkable things.”

PawSox want $4M a year from RI for Prov. stadium | wpri.com

Help recoup the cost? This is a bad deal for Providence and Rhode Island.

Skeffington said the new owners would put up the $85 million required to design and build the ballpark, but would seek state and city subsidies after it’s finished to help recoup the cost. They also want a 30-year lease on the land – at $1 a year – from the I-195 Redevelopment District Commission and Brown University, with an option to buy it at fair market value at the end of the lease.

The team is asking state ...

Hale keeping tabs on Tomas, O’Brien at Triple-A Reno | dbacks.com

He’ll probably get over the yips. He still won’t be a decent catcher.

“He’s playing the outfield, he’ll play a little first,” D-backs manager Chip Hale said. “I think they are waiting about a month to get him back in there. Just to kind of clear his head and let him get off to a good offensive start.”

O’Brien’s days behind the plate, though, are not necessarily over.

“He had come a long way catching-wise and gained the trust of the pitchers,” Hale said. “I really feel like at some point there ...

A highly subjective and judgmental ranking of major league and Triple-A cities

We’re not simply ranking what Triple-A cities stink the most. That’s lame. This is a comparative exercise: is it worse to be sent from Big League City A to Minor League City B, or Big League City C to Minor League City D? This is a multi-variable poll, in which a GREAT big league city can find itself farther down this list if it’s paired with a really good minor league city. We’re ranking big gaps in desirability between affiliates, with the bigger the falloff ranking higher on the list;

Arizona Diamondbacks call up Cuban OF Yasmany Tomas

This whole thing is working out great.

The Diamondbacks promoted Cuban slugger Yasmany Tomas to the big leagues on Wednesday, a surprising move given the glut of position players already on the roster.

Just before Opening Day, the club optioned Tomas to Triple-A Reno, citing a lack of playing time and the desire for him to get regular at-bats to help in his development.

But an injury changed the equation for the Diamondbacks, who decided their need for another hitter in the majors trumped the ...

Red Sox starters: The Big Five or Five Easy Pieces?

Week 1, rave reviews. Clay Buchholz at the top of his game, newly minted Rick Porcello with a strong debut marred by one bad pitch, Justin Masterson triumphantly returning, Wade Miley battling the Bombers and Joe Kelly dazzling them.

Second go-round, not so much: Only Porcello so far this week has managed to complete five innings. Buchholz was hit with a seven-spot in the first inning Sunday night in New York and gave up 10 runs (9 earned) in 3⅓ innings in the Bronx. Masterson was gone with ...

DallasNews: Why the Rangers should trade for Josh Hamilton

Alienated enough of their dwindling fan base yet?

It’s not out of the question. It’s not crazy. Certain aspects of a Hamilton-back-to-Texas deal make a lot of sense.

I feel like Hamilton would be on the field enough, motivated enough that he would bring some punch to this team. And he would at least provide entertainment. That’s more than you can expect from most of this current Rangers’ outfield.

Why should they trade for him?  Apparently Tim Cowlinshaw thinks the Rangers haven’t ...

Carlos Carrasco injured by line drive in Cleveland Indians’ 4-1 loss to White Sox

Right-hander Carlos Carrasco was hit in the face in the first inning by a line drive off the bat of Melky Cabrera and had to be taken off the field on a motorized stretcher.

Carrasco suffered a bruised jaw, but X-rays at Lutheran Medical Center showed no signs of a concussion or head injury. It is not known how many starts Carrasco will miss.

Scary moment in last night’s Indians game. It looks like Carrasco is going to be OK - if so, he’s a very lucky man.

Boston - Baseball Prospectus: THE INCREDIBLE VERSATILITY OF BROCK HOLT

Of course, this set-up forced them to put Hanley Ramirez at 3B last night.

This combination of skills is the first, and biggest part of why the Boston Red Sox are starting the season with an unorthodox bench. I took a survey of all 30 teams on RosterResource.com, and Boston appears as one of two teams that run the same guy out as the team’s only bench shortstop AND the team’s only bench third baseman AND the team’s only bench center fielder (along with the Indians and Mike Aviles).

(If ...

Pittsburgh Press, April 15, 1915:

Angels in pickle with high-priced Hamilton, who is backed by CBA | FOX Sports

Has anyone reported on the specific language in Hamilton’s contract?

Jim Duquette of MLB Network Radio reported Wednesday that Hamilton’s agent, Michael Moye, told teams involved in the free-agent bidding that the player would allow protective language if he received the right deal.
Moreno said at the time of the signing that Hamilton’s deal included no such language. But it turns out that the owner indeed tried to guard against a relapse by Hamilton, fully aware of the player’s ...

Newsday: The Matt Harvey ticket effect for second Mets home game?

Apparenty, the Wilpons don’t want to be late on the next round of bank payments.

“Secondary considerations” was how Mets GM Sandy Alderson last month characterized the team’s decision to have Matt Harvey start the third game of this season at Washington, and subsequently, the second home game at Citi Field, instead of Opening Day at either stadium.

Well, that second home game was Tuesday night. And Harvey didn’t disappoint, allowing three earned runs on five hits in six innings while striking ...
