Kyle Schwarber avoids beer can, delivers big hit for Chicago Cubs - Chicago Cubs Blog - ESPN

Somebody picked a weird time to give up drinking.

Schwarber got a taste—almost literally—of the Cubs/Sox rivalry when a fan threw a beer can at him during the Cubs’ 6-3 win on Saturday, their ninth consecutive victory.

“A tallboy,” Schwarber said, laughing afterwards. “And it wasn’t even drunk all the way.

Good mechanics key to surge by Jackie Bradley Jr. - The Boston Globe

If Bradley can hit .250/.340/.420 he’ll be a first division starting centerfielder. I hope his recent spurt is not a mirage.

Boston Red Sox turn to Matt Barnes in pitching rotation - Boston Red Sox Blog - ESPN

Matt Barnes is not a major league starter without some big changes to his repertoire. Unfortunately for me, he’s scheduled to start on Monday, when I have tickets. It looks like my personal Red Sox losing streak is about to get a new record.

With Steven Wright going on the seven-day concussion DL after being struck with a batting practice fly ball earlier in the week, Boston Red Sox interim manager Torey Lovullo announced that right-hander Matt Barnes will take Wright’s turn in the rotation on ...

Duquette: Orioles want to re-sign Davis | Comcast SportsNet Baltimore

“We’ve got a number of free agents on this team, and I can tell you this: We’re going to sign some of them, and some of them, we’re not going to be able to sign,” Duquette said.

“We do want to sign some of our key players for the future, and Chris Davis is one of them.”

from the article because i do not know how to place anything in italics

efore revealing his secret to teammates, Denson figured it was time to finally tell his family, and did so in the spring. First, he told his sister, Celestine, a professional dancer married to former Brewers farmhand Jose Sermo.

“She said, ‘I’ve known since you were little,’” said Denson. “I said, ‘How did you know?’ She said, ‘You’re my little brother. I’m around you all the time.’”

Royals magical 2014 postseason is leading to baby boom in Kansas City

Much has been written about the romance of a baseball game: The perfectly green grass like spring in bloom, the highly charged one-on-one battles between pitcher and batter, the foul lines like ley lines laid down by Eros himself.

For Royals fans, this has led to at least one hospital setting a record this July for most babies born in a month with 473—this coming exactly nine months after Royals’ magical World Series run. These newborns even carry reminders of Kansas City’s first postseason ...

But the biggest reason the M’s have fallen on their faces this year is the same factor that has essentially torpedoed the entirety of GM Jack Zduriencik’s tenure and the same one that makes their outlook so murky: They’re terrible at developing prospects.

Astros’ George Springer cleared for baseball activities - Ultimate Astros

It seems like Springer last played in another season.

Astros right fielder George Springer, who has been out since suffering a fractured right wrist July 1, was cleared to resume some baseball activities Friday morning.

“I didn’t really know what to do, to be honest with you,” Springer said. “I prepared myself for no and yes. I got told yes and it was just kind of a relief. It’s obviously been hard these last six weeks to not be able to play out there with these guys. I’m almost ...

Jose Reyes clears waivers; could Yankees be a fit? - CBSSports.com

Unless the Rockies would be picking up a LOT of cash, this sounds like a bad idea for the Yankees.

It’s no surprise Reyes cleared waivers as he’s surely worth a bit less than the $55 million remaining in his Marlins deal that goes through 2017. Reyes doesn’t really feel like a fit in Colorado (originally, they had preferred to do the deal without him), and while he was polite about it, Reyes sounded like a guy who wouldn’t mind a return to New York and the Mets in interviews when the Rockies ...

Matt Kemp hits first Padres cycle | MLB.com

As he chugged hard between second and third base in the ninth inning on Friday, Matt Kemp was well aware he had never hit for the cycle in a big league career that has spanned 10 seasons.

Kemp just wasn’t aware that the Padres—a franchise born in April 1969—hadn’t had one of their own, either.

John Farrell, Red Sox Manager, Diagnosed with Lymphoma

Farrell described the lymphoma as “localized and highly curable,” per NESN.

Deadspin: Aroldis Chapman Broke MLBs Statcast

Aroldis Chapman throws the baseball very fast. So fast, in fact, that he ruined MLB.com’s Statcast Leaderboard. That’s where MLB shows a glimpse of the data from its player-tracking technology, listing the leaders in a bunch of categories. One is fastest pitch, and the problem was that the 50 fastest pitches this season, from a high of 103.9 MPH to a “low” of 102.4 MPH, were all thrown by Chapman. Yeah, we get it, he throws hard, but who else does? Enter a cutesy solution: the Chapman ...

More on Game Theory and Defensive Shifts

OK, whose job will be to man the whiteboard when the front office flunky explains the math to David Ortiz?

Despite Ortiz hypothetically succeeding 55% of the time he bunts during a shift, our mixed strategy nash equilibrium calculation shows us that he should actually swing away around 88% of time he sees the shift and only bunt in 12% of those plate appearances. That 12% would become even smaller meaning Ortiz would bunt even less if he increased his rate of bunting success.

Alright, I am ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 8-14-2015

Washington Times, August 14, 1915:

The Svelte and the Plump members of the Electric Vehicle Association are scheduled to mingle this afternoon in the play-off contest for baseball supremacy.

Capt. James Orme, of the corpulent aggregation, has promised Government officials not to slide into the bases on the Monument grounds and to refrain from knocking foul balls into the observation room of the monument.

I can’t believe this was a thing. And I absolutely love the phrase “corpulent aggregation”. ...Read More...

Column: Defense no longer optional for Pirates - DK on Pittsburgh Sports

I thought the Pirates defense was good because of all the shifting that they do. :/

And hey, does that mean defense is no longer optional?

I felt compelled to ask Hurdle one-on-one afterward: Could he find a way to help this awful defense by essentially playing chess all night?

“I think there are things a manager can do, sure,” he answered. “Things obviously will get clearer when J-Hay and Jordy get back, so that’ll make a difference in that regard. But yeah, I’ll do what I have to ...

Is it time for Alex Rodriguez to take a seat? - Yankees Blog - ESPN

It seems as if there will be no rest for the weary on Friday; Price, a left-hander, is starting, and Rodriguez, a right-handed batter, will be expected to face him.

“That’s just the nature of our game,” Girardi said. “I think sometimes we can overthink it. Do I think there’s some heavy legs today? Absolutely. There’s heavy legs on both sides, but they’ve got to learn to fight through that. As long as you’re playing 162 games in 180 days, it’s not going away.”

Alex Rodriguez ...

Forecasting Pitcher Platoon Splits – The Hardball Times

Not any shocking findings but interesting nonetheless.

Managers, it appears, stack their lineups with more lefties when facing right-handed pitching but pay little attention to the projected platoon split of the pitcher. The right-handed pitchers projected to have reverse splits faced roughly as many left-handed batters as the right-handed pitchers with the most extreme projected splits and dramatically more left-handed batters than the left-handed pitchers with the weakest projected splits. ...
