Nationals trade rumors: Washington interested in David Robertson, Alex Colome

According to Jim Bowden of ESPN, the Nationals have “touched base” with multiple teams regarding their closers, specifically the White Sox’s David Robertson and Rays’ Alex Colome.

Washington has been searching for ninth-inning help since the end of last season. On top of losing Mark Melancon as a free agent, the Nationals also whiffed on Aroldis Chapman and Kenley Jansen. This isn’t the first time Robertson’s name has come up in connection to the Nationals, either. The White Sox ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-24-2017

Pittsburgh Press, April 24, 1917:

Manager Mathewson of the Cincinnati Nationals, announced that he had obtained the services of Jim Thorpe of the New York Nationals. The deal involved a straight sale, but the price was not announced.

1917 was the closest Thorpe came to being a regular in the big leagues, and he wasn’t awful. Thorpe hit .237/.275/.357 (96 OPS+) in 103 games, and legged out 10 triples in 308 at-bats. He put up 0.5 WAR, which isn’t great, but at least suggests that he deserved to ...

OTP 24 April 2017: Talking politics (and baseball) with the mayor

Indianapolis mayor Joe Hogsett on politics:

“Who thinks it is acceptable for a kid to come Downtown with a handgun in his pocket?” he asked. “Who thinks it is OK for kids who aren’t even 18 to be walking around with guns? I don’t think you can find anyone who thinks that is acceptable.”

Indianapolis mayor Joe Hogsett on baseball:

“Some call it slow, or even boring. But it’s deliberate for a reason. It’s a situational game. Every batter, every pitch, presents a different ...

Mariners DFA Leonys Martin

I see he’s been struggling mightily but this still surprises me. While it seems clear he’s not going to deliver on the promise he showed early in his career, he’s still got 10 career WAR, 3 WAA through age 28 and seems to still play a competent CF. Price tag if grabbed on waivers is whatever is left of $4.9 M.

SportsGrid: Noah Syndergaard Hints That He Gets Killed In His ‘Game Of Thrones’ Scene

In a coat of blue or a coat of orange…

It makes sense that the Mets’ Noah Syndergaard would be cast as a Lannister general in Game of Thrones — he discussed his appearance in Season 7 recently on Sports Illustrated Now, and confirmed that he’s already filmed his part in Spain.

Syndergaard’s part is little more than a cameo, but he did say that he either “kills someone or is killed.” Seeing that he’s a general, and the killing is usually left to the soldiers, it’s probably the ...

Shelby Miller leaves with forearm tightness | MLB.com

“These are tough things for me to address,” said D-backs manager Torey Lovullo. “It’s really unfortunate. Shelby’s been throwing the ball extremely well. Numbers aside, you just hate to have something like his pop up. We’re going to be optimistic.”

Miller says he has never experienced this type of issue before, but a forearm injury sometimes is a precursor to elbow problems and ultimately Tommy John (ligament-replacement) surgery.
“Personally, I feel like I’ll probably feel better tomorrow,” ...

Watch Matt Barnes Get Ejected For Throwing At Manny Machado Despite Foul Ball

The Boston Red Sox’s payback on Manny Machado took bizarre form Sunday. The Baltimore Orioles third baseman drew the ire of the Red Sox on Friday for his hard slide on Dustin Pedroia, which injured the veteran second baseman. Boston didn’t retaliate Saturday, but the issue finally came to a head late in Sunday’s series finale. With one out in the eighth inning, Red Sox reliever Matt Barnes appeared to throw at Machado’s head — although the ball ended up hitting Machado’s bat for a ...

Smokeless Tobacco is Gone From the Ballpark, if Not the Clubhouse

Before a recent game at Citi Field, one player stood at his locker, peeked from left to right and then slipped a can of smokeless tobacco into his back pocket. There was a reason for his surreptitiousness. Since last April, a city law has banned such products for use at both the Mets’ home ballpark and at Yankee Stadium.

And yet the player may not have had to act that secretively. Although similar laws against use of smokeless tobacco now extend to 12 major league stadiums outside New York, ...

Going into the weekend, Haniger actually led the majors in Baseball Reference’s version of Wins Above Replacement (WAR). Judge was 11th in the stat, which tries to encompass hitting, baserunning and defense. Benintendi, the preseason favorite, was hitting .322 with an .838 OPS.

Jason Heyward swinging hot bat early for Cubs | MLB.com

“It’s tough when you are worried about other things,” Heyward said of his struggles last April. “I had a wrist injury early, which is not an excuse. This year, coming in, I had put in my work in the offseason. I was able to have a consistency in my routine that allowed me to relax and have the good timing and rhythm that allows me to focus on just myself and the pitcher.”

Over the past several months I’ve asked a handful of high-ranking front office members about personnel decisions. More specifically, I’ve asked how they assess the relative value of acquiring a specific style of player, versus simply upgrading at a position. Bobby Evans, the general manager of the San Francisco Giants, is among those I’ve queried.

“You can do both simultaneously,” Evans told me. “They go together. You might have a guy who would clearly fit the chemistry of your ...

Angels Notes: Garrett Richards shifted to 60-day DL

Richards, the erstwhile ace of the Angels’ staff, departed in the fifth inning of his only start April 5 and hasn’t picked up a baseball since. He was said to be “making progress” from his biceps injury as recently as Friday, according to Angels manager Mike Scioscia.

However, “his most recent assessment and exam showed mild improvement in biceps strength and also irritation of the cutaneous nerve, which is contributing to his strength deficit,” the Angels said Saturday in a ...

Dustin Pedroia on controversial play: ‘I don’t need a f—— rule’

“I don’t even know what the rule is,” the veteran told NESN in a postgame interview.

He continued: “I’ve turned the best double play in the major leagues for 11 years. I don’t need a f—— rule. Let’s be honest. The rule’s irrelevant. The rule’s for people with bad footwork. That’s it.”

Tempers flare in Tigers-Twins; Matt Boyd, Miguel Sano ejected

Tempers flared in the fifth inning of Saturday’s game in Minnesota after Detroit Tigers pitcher Matt Boyd threw behind Twins first baseman Miguel Sano.

Sano pointed at Boyd. Tigers catcher James McCann came up and exchanged words with Sano, who reacted by landing a punch to McCann’s protective gear.

Tigers third baseman Nick Castellanos came running in, yelling at Boyd. Both teams came into the field before order was restored.

Boyd and Sano were both ejected. It was the first career ...

The myth of Aaron Judge, our large adult baseball son

What I don’t know about the Yankees’ large adult son could fill a book, and I have filled that book with myths of his size. How old is he? No one really knows, I’ll say, clenching a corncob pipe in my teeth. People say he was 4 or 5 when the MacPhersons found him in their orchard, standing on his toes to pluck apples from the tallest branches. Where’s he from? Oh, here and there. Hard to be from any one place when three steps in any direction takes you over the state line. The less I ...

Red Sox coaches still don’t want hitters thinking about hitting for power - providencejournal.com

Just 208 homers?

Led by Davis, who went deep 47 times, Baltimore hit more than 250 home runs last season, far and away the best in the American League. The Orioles still scored fewer than 750 runs, however. Conversely, the Red Sox hit just 208 home runs but scored nearly 900 runs.
