Padres acquire shortstop Freddy Galvis from Phillies - The San Diego Union-Tribune

This looks like a deal to help the development of some of their young pitchers.

An apparent solution to the Padres’ greatest weakness is en route to San Diego. The club on Friday traded for shortstop Freddy Galvis, sending pitching prospect Enyel De Los Santos to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Chatwood Initial Deal with Cubs Violated Rules – Inside the Seams

Former Rockies right-hander Tyler Chatwood agreed to a three-year, $38 million free-agent contract with the Cubs. Nothing wrong with that. The deal, however, included a clause that if he received one Cy Young vote — even for fifth place — his 2019 salary would be increased $2 million, and if he received one vote in 2018 and one vote in 2019 he would receive a $4 million raise in his salary for 2019. One problem — that clause was illegal, and if anybody should have known the Cubs should ...

Dustin Fowler sues White Sox over injury at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Dustin Fowler’s lawsuit, filed Friday, claims that the Sox and the [state] agency were negligent in not securing the unpadded electrical box he collided with along the right field line during the June 29 game.

Fowler, then playing for the New York Yankees, crashed into the right field wall while chasing down a fly ball in foul territory. Fowler hit the low side of the wall at full speed, causing him to flip over. When he tried to stand up, he fell to the ground, prompting a gasp from the ...

Many moving parts to potential Zack Greinke trade

The danger in posting a two-day-old trade-rumor story is that it may have evaporated two days ago.  But the Rangers have been so quiet this winter (big acquisitions have been Doug Fister and somebody named Chris Martin whom I assume is not the Coldplay guy or the Jets’ running back) that I have to have something to muse about.

After walking around all off-season with their pockets turned out, the Rangers have engaged the Arizona Diamondbacks about right-hander Zack Greinke, the former Cy Young ...

ESPN: Carlos Santana signing a significant step in Phillies’ rebuild (Schoenfield)

1. First off, at three years and $60 million, it’s not overpaying, and limiting the deal to three years means there’s little chance of it blowing up on the back end. Santana owns a career .365 OBP, so he brings some much-needed on-base ability to the Phillies lineup. The deal takes him through his age 32-34 seasons, and while Santana’s home run production has been inconsistent through the years—27 in 2014, 19 in 2015, 34 in 2016, 23 in 2017—we know he will draw his walks. The Phillies ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-15-2017

Chicago Eagle, December 15, 1917:

The oldest baseball in captivity has been discovered in Syracuse, N.Y. A few years ago the oldest ball extant was found in Pittsburgh, and was insured for $1,000 against loss. The ball was used in a game played in 1864. George Geer of Syracuse, now comes forth with a ball which he claims was used in a game between Utica and Syracuse on August 22, 1861. Geer’s father, Harry Geer, pitched for Syracuse in 1861, and in the game in which this particular ball was ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 12-14-2017

Ogden Standard, December 14, 1917:

Earle Neale of the Cincinnati Reds, best known to the sporting world as a fast outfielder, has won as great fame this fall as a football coach. Neale coached the West Virginia Wesleyan eleven, developing one of the strongest teams a small college has had this past season. Neale’s boys played tight games with both Washington and Jefferson and Penn State.

Earle “Greasy” Neale was a pretty good but unremarkable outfielder for the Reds in the teens and 20s. He was ...

You should be very skeptical of claims the Royals lost over $60 million the last two years - Royals Review

Teams can lose money in specific years. That doesn’t mean an owner loses money over the long term despite some year-to-year loses.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Royals were losing some money. But $65-68 million over a two-year period doesn’t quite pass the smell test. That isn’t to say I think Dayton Moore is lying, but there are many different ways to interpret “losing money” when it comes to sports teams. For that, let’s turn to Shaun Newkirk, who is much better with his money ...

Alex Anthopoulos bringing high-level analytics approach to Braves

“It was eye-opening for me,” Anthopoulos said of the Dodgers’ use of analytics and as much data as available, boiled down for players to consume if they so chose. “Look, it’s not a panacea for anything. You still need great players and obviously Los Angeles has great players and great acquisitions. Most of all, this stuff, it’s up to the players. Chris Taylor made a lot of great changes in L.A.; he made those changes. He wanted to do that, he had a willingness to do it.”

ESPN: Buster Olney: Judge Should Hit Leadoff For The Yankees

Get the pitcher sweating bullets right from the start?

But Judge can bat leadoff because he has the primary skill of the best No. 1 hitters: He gets on base a whole lot. Judge drew 127 walks, easily leading the American League and breaking Ted Williams’ 78-year-old record for a rookie, and only Mike Trout had a higher on-base percentage than Judge’s .422.

Judge also led the AL in strikeouts, with 208, and between his combination of walks and strikeouts, he averaged 4.41 pitches per plate ...

Eric Hosmer will get paid even though the numbers may argue against it

I’d rather have another team jump on this possible grenade.

Even those fluent in scouting and analytics find Hosmer’s case to be infuriatingly difficult to parse. How does one team’s internal scouting reports grade Hosmer’s glove as an 80 – a top-of-the-charts elite mark – while the publicly available defensive metrics regularly rate him among the game’s worst first basemen?

“In my heart, he’s a $100 million player,” one general manager said. “In my head, I’m not so ...

TELANDER: Conflict-of-interest issue in contract was award-winning | Chicago Sun-Times

Voters should take voting seriously. At some point, though, they can take themselves a little too seriously.

And Gordon Wittenmyer, our longtime Cubs beat writer, likes the voting but hates it when “the industry itself attaches itself to it.’’ Remember that, Theo. “Our integrity and our credibility are our brand. The appearance of conflict of interest is conflict of interest.’’

Those are scans we conduct whenever we sign a pitcher. Based on the readings of those MRIs, there are not signs of acute trauma in the elbow. It looks consistent with players his age. We ...

Cardinals Baseball Prez John Mozeliak Is in a Bind. Can He Find a Way Out? - 101Sports.com

But the Cardinals are in a bind… here’s why.

1. At least to this point, the Cardinals have made it very clear that they prefer to add impact talent through trades, rather than take a costly dive into the deep end of the free-agent pool. Of course, their philosophy could shift, based on, among other things, supply and demand and desperation. But if they plan to stay out of the expensive section of free agency, they’re eliminating a way to get better;  putting a limit on their options; and ...
