MLB to talk betting with owners

New commissioner Rob Manfred says it’s time for Major League Baseball to give “fresh consideration” to an issue it has shunned for decades—legalized sports betting.

“Gambling in terms of our society has changed its presence on legalization,” Manfred said Thursday on ESPN’s “Outside the Lines,” “and I think it’s important for there to be a conversation between me and the owners about what our institutional position will be.”

For decades, baseball’s position on sports betting has been one of ...

MLB commish on Pete Rose’s Hall eligibility: ‘It’s a conversation I’m expecting to have’

After 25 years of ineligibility, Pete Rose could see his name on the Baseball Hall of Fame ballot in the near future.

MLB’s new commissioner Rob Manfred might be willing to open the the door for possible reinstatement of Rose, who was banned from baseball in 1989.

“I have heard from his lawyer, and I do anticipate having a conversation about that,” Manfred told ESPN Radio on Thursday.

Baseball’s Worst Contracts «

When people say, “The (insert team here) HAVE to sign (insert pricey free agent)!” they often ignore the big flashy pitfalls of such acquisitions.

Like all good CEOs, the men who run Major League Baseball’s 30 teams try to be forward-thinking. Even those who have only the most cursory interest in number-crunching understand that baseball players typically peak in their twenties and decline in their thirties. They’re fully aware of the pitfalls of awarding a fat, long-term contract to an ...

Brooklyn Cyclones minor leaguers to wear ‘Saved By The Bell’ jerseys

What is going on here????

The minor-league team that brought us “Seinfeld Night” is back with another re-run idea in 2015. The Brooklyn Cyclones, a New York Mets Class A affiliate in the short-season New York-Penn League, will wear jerseys inspired by “Saved By The Bell” in the coming season. The threads are part of a tribute night scheduled for June 24.

And here the jersey is:

Pittsburgh Press, February 6, 1915:

One of the prettiest fights on the [White Sox spring training] schedule will be the finale in the elimination series for the third base post. There are four entrants for this prize—Howard Baker, Jimmy Breton, Al Bromwich and Russell Blackburne.

The entries are not closed yet and the number of contestants for this price may be materially increased, but the chances are one of this quartet will be the winner.

The White Sox having a question mark at third base? ...

SB Nation/OTM: Red Sox, Wade Miley agree to contract extension

This should buy Miley a ton of gluten

The Red Sox have avoided arbitration with Wade Miley once and for all, signing their newest southpaw starter to a three-year, $19.25 million contract extension with a club option for a fourth year.

Originally, Miley was slated to become a free agent in 2017. Now, thanks to the addition of the option year (valued at $12 million with $2 million in incentives according to Bob Nightengale), Miley will remain in Boston through 2018 so long as the club still ...

Royals manager Ned Yost developed app to teach baseball strategy

Yost described the game as “a baseball IQ test.”

On your phone or tablet, you will be given the option of playing any of the nine defensive positions on a baseball field.

The game then fires off different scenarios, and you’re supposed to touch the base where you’d throw the ball.

...

“You’ve got 30 seconds to answer as many as you can,” Yost said.

There are different levels and things get progressively more difficult. Is the infield in or back? Is the ball hit to your left ...
