Five questions for Mets entering this week’s Winter Meetings - NY Daily News

I don’t know why but when I read the headline I heard it in Count Von Count’s voice.

McManaman: Didi Gregorius’ stint as Derek Jeter’s replacement won’t last long

Thinking…

There’s a reason why two teams have already given up on Gregorius before he turns 25. He can’t hit. That’s why he couldn’t even crack the starting lineup on the worst team in baseball this past season.

Think about that for a minute.

Rays manager Kevin Cash said to have sharp baseball mind | Tampa Bay Times

So people don’t think Kevin Cash is very bright?

“Kevin Cash is smarter than what people think he is,” Boston DH David Ortiz said Friday in the Dominican Republic. “We played together and he was a guy that, his knowledge about the game was beyond guys that play the game every day. That’s what kept him playing as long as he played — his knowledge, the way he approached the game, the way he looked at the game.”

Will winter meetings ignite quiet Phillies’ offseason? | Comcast SportsNet Philadelphia

The Phillies don’t agree with the adage that “it’s better to trade a guy a year too early than a year too late.”

The Phillies’ slow-moving offseason can be traced to two factors. First, as that exec said above, not a lot of teams are knocking down the Phillies’ door for their players. In short, many of the players the Phillies are trying to move have flaws ranging from advanced age, to high salaries, to declining production. The second factor in the Phils’ sluggish offseason is the rest of ...

Always innovating, Melvin open to new outfield alignments | MLB.com

Doug Melvin, innovator.

Melvin was ahead of his sport’s metric timeline. The Brewers began extensive shifting, including for right-handed batters, in 2004, when manager Ned Yost shared his boss’s foresight.
“Yost was very open-minded,” Melvin recalled of the American League champion Royals’ current skipper. “We had enough data to prove the shift worked against certain hitters. We were one of the first to put three guys on the left side of second base for right-handed hitters. A lot of teams ...

Source: Dodgers’ trade of Ethier to D-backs falls through | FOX Sports

The owner nixed the deal because Montero is one of his favorite players. You have to love it when owners hire baseball people to run their teams and don’t let them do it.

Andre Ethier a Diamondback? Miguel Montero a Dodger?
The teams recently discussed a trade involving those players, but the deal collapsed when the D-Backs’ ownership declined to give final approval, according to major-league sources.
Under the proposed trade, the Dodgers would have sent Ethier and catcher Tim Federowicz to ...

Mets have chips to trade during winter meetings, but they’ll be patient - Newsday

You can never have enough pitching. Or something like that.

“I guess I would agree that there has been a run on position players, and we’ve been part of that,” said Alderson, who kick-started the offseason by signing Michael Cuddyer at last month’s general managers’ meetings. “But at some point, people will turn to pitching, and then it’s a question of who’s available, who signs, who gets traded. At the end of the day, there’s always somebody that needs more pitching, so I’m not too worried ...

Ballou: Handing out the Hall passes

Straight from the Wolf City Daily…the Ballou HOF ballot: P. Martinez, R. Johnson, Smoltz, Clemens, Bonds, Bagwell, Piazza and McGwire.

Johnson and Martinez are easy, although Johnson is easier than Martinez. Martinez had a Sandy Koufax career — incomparable for several prime seasons, but not for that long. Martinez is overwhelming in one of my personal criteria for the Hall of Fame — would you buy a ticket just so you could tell your grandchildren you saw him perform?

Part of me would ...

Sports teams are phasing out hard tickets; why - redeyechicago.com

Fans who buy 2015 White Sox season tickets will get their choice of the best available seats, a special pin and hat, a media guide, the option to buy postseason games, parking discounts and invitations to special events.
What they won’t get are the tickets.
“I just called them and expressed my displeasure,” season ticket holder Merrill O’Ryan, 49, said. “If I don’t have that paper ticket anymore ... I won’t be able to save it in a scrap book.”

The Sox will require season ticket holders to ...

2014 Trade Value: An Offseason Update | FanGraphs Baseball

Every summer during the All-Star break, I run our annual Trade Value series. It’s a lot of fun, and a nice distraction from not having actual baseball for four days, and it makes some sense to publish it in the lead-up to the July 31st trade deadline, since that’s a time when we’re comparing the trade value of a lot of different players. However, there’s also a downside to running the trade value list in the middle of the season, as the list can look a little outdated pretty quickly ...

STOP SPREADING RUMORS!!

MLB.com: Castro and center fielder Dexter Fowler have been the subject of trade rumors. What’s the market like for them?
Luhnow: I think it’s primarily Internet rumors, to be honest with you. Clearly, they’re both good players that have one year [Fowler] or two years [Castro] left of control, and those players are always going to be talked about in trade rumors. I’m sure there’s a lot of teams out there that have interest in them, and some have reached out, but we’re not ...

Yankees To Sign Andrew Miller

Do we need to revisit the Miguel Cabrera trade?

The Yankees and Andrew Miller have agreed to a four-year, $36MM contract, tweets Jack Curry of the YES Network...

The 29-year-old Miller (30 next May) broke out in a huge way in 2014, pitching to a 2.02 ERA with an eye-popping 14.9 K/9 (an AL record), 2.5 BB/9 and a 46.9 percent ground-ball rate in 62 1/2 innings for the Red Sox and Orioles… Miller will pair with Dellin Betances — an electric breakout story himself — at the back of the Yankee ...

NY Post: Is Jeter Gearing Up To Buy The Marlins?

Jeter has declared repeatedly for quite a while now he intends to own a baseball team someday .  .  . He even told reporters in June he intended to reach out to team owners upon the season’s (and his playing career’s) conclusion. And if you want to bet which team he’ll eventually own? You won’t find a safer wager than the Marlins.

The Marlins said Jeter simply stopped by because he happened to be in town, and maybe that’s all it was — for now. Jeter figures to approach his goal ...

Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth convicted of reckless driving

I wonder if he has one of those absurdly loud exhaust systems, too…

Washington Nationals outfielder Jayson Werth was found guilty Friday of reckless driving and sentenced to 10 days in prison.

Werth, 35, was pulled over on July 6 while driving 105 mph in a 55-mph zone on Route 193 in Fairfax County, according to court records. Werth was driving a two-door Porsche at the time of the offense, which occurred around 9:40 a.m. on a Sunday.

Werth’s attorney said he plans to appeal the ...

Rays To Hire Kevin Cash As Manager

The Rays will hire former big league catcher Kevin Cash as their next manager, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link). Cash was reportedly one of three finalists with Raul Ibanez and former Mariners manager/current Royals bench coach Don Wakamatsu. Ibanez had reportedly withdrawn himself from consideration earlier this week…

Cash, who turns 37 tomorrow, served as the Indians’ bullpen coach in 2013-14 after a brief stop in the Blue Jays’ scouting department following his ...

Yankees To Acquire Didi Gregorius In Three-Team Deal With D-Backs, Tigers

Didi has big shoes to fill, although those shoes don’t necessarily have to cover much ground.

Tigers, whether or not this works out, most likely got FISTERED!

The Yankees, Diamondbacks and Tigers have completed a three-team trade that will send Didi Gregorius to the Yankees, reports Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter link). Rosenthal adds that Robbie Ray will indeed go from the Tigers to the Diamondbacks and Shane Greene will be heading to the Tigers.

The Weirdest Cuban Baseball Defection Story You’ll Ever Read

But even executives who have spent years in the international player market are marveling at the mystery and innuendo surrounding 19-year-old Cuban phenom shortstop Yoan Moncada: his legal exit from Cuba, his subsequent romantic pairing with a player agent, and his representation by an accountant who has never had an athlete client in any capacity. Nobody has seen a Cuban defection story quite like this.

“It doesn’t make it comfortable for me, but in a way, we sort of have come to expect it ...

Kepner: In Hall Vote, Tainted Candidates And Split Tickets

So unless the Hall of Fame repeals the arbitrary limit of 10 names, voters could face still more years of a ballot logjam, with Clemens and Bonds taking up just enough space on just enough ballots to squeeze other strong candidates from remaining there.

Perhaps, then, it is time to face this reality: Vote for Bonds and Clemens, and you are throwing those votes away. The veterans’ committee, not the writers, is destined to be their final arbiter. The writers should focus on the candidates who ...

Milwaukee Sentinel, December 5, 1914:

Charlie Swain, outfielder for the Seattle club of the Northwestern league, never will play ball again. His right leg was amputated on Friday. Since the season closed, Swain has been working [in San Francisco] as a telephone lineman. Last week he fell off a truck and it ran over him, crushing his leg so badly as to necessitate an operation. He was to have played in 1915 with the Minneapolis team of the American Association.

Swain was a pretty good ballplayer ...

The A’s are in discussions that could net them a minor-league infielder from the Indians in exchange for outfielder Brandon Moss. Among the A’s targets, according to big league sources, is Double-A second baseman Joe Wendle, a strong prospect whose 2014 season was shortened by a broken hamate bone.
