MLB Video: Ripken on defensive runs saved

WARNING: You’ll never get these minutes of your life back.

Neil Weinberg of Fangraphs responds:

Why did MLBN let Bill Ripken do a five minute segment on DRS without explaining how it works at all?

Don’t Change The Channel With These Hitters At Bat

The bosses gave me an impossible assignment: Write up the definitive list of players whose at-bats you can’t afford to miss…

Miguel Cabrera, Detroit Tigers

Key attribute: Can’t outsmart him

Stat to know: Led majors with .332 average against off-speed pitches (curves/sliders/changeups/splitters) in 2016

Cabrera has hit .300 11 times in his career and has won four batting titles. He has nine seasons hitting at least .320; since World War II, only Wade Boggs and Stan Musial (10 apiece) ...

Knee sprain sends Jackie Bradley, Jr. to disabled list

The Red Sox placed Jackie Bradley Jr. on the 10-day disabled list prior to Tuesday night’s game against the Orioles, but at this point, the belief is that the center fielder’s right knee sprain will be a short-term ailment.

Baseball Team Values 2017

. The average MLB team is worth $1.54 billion, 19% more than one year ago (to see the impact on the Forbes SportsMoney Index, click here). Values were driven higher by new local television deals that are increasing at roughly a two-fold rate, surging profitability, and the escalating value of Major League Baseball Advanced Media, the Internet and technology arm of MLB.

While over the past few years most of the new local television deals involved big market teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers, ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-11-2017

Pittsburgh Press, April 11, 1917:

It is hardly conceivable that the Pirates can prove disappointments this season. Very few persons are optimistic enough to concede them a chance to make a good showing in the National league race, which opens today. It’s a cinch that they can’t land lower than eighth at the finish and if they go higher than eight, they will apparently prove a big surprise to many critics and rival players. Just listen to this from the Cincinnati Enquirer: “The Cleveland Indians ...

Ron Cook: Hurdle deserves extension despite the odds | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

How about reading it from the greatest manager in Pirates history?

“Clint Hurdle has gotten a lot of credit for becoming a Pittsburgher, and rightfully so,” Jim Leyland said earlier this month. “He’s gotten a lot of credit for being a motivator, and rightfully so. But Clint Hurdle has not gotten enough credit in Pittsburgh, in my opinion, for being the game manager that he is. He is a terrific game manager. I don’t think that has been recognized because the other stuff has kind of ...

This is the elusive peek at a Michael Pineda who doesn’t blink | New York Post

The Yankees, considering so many question marks in the rotation, would be hard-pressed to even make a strong run at the playoffs without excellence from the 28-year-old righty, whose motivations can hardly be stronger since he can be a free agent after the season.

Romine said he believes this performance will “help” Pineda when everything is not working quite as ideally as it did in the home opener, serving as a reminder to trust three pitches and his skills.

But as glorious as Pineda was ...

The Forgotten Rivalry: The Reds and Dodgers Battle for Supremacy of the 70s

“As far as talent goes, I’ll take Reds-Dodgers in the ‘70s over any version of Yankees-Red Sox, Cubs-Cardinals, or Dodgers-Giants.”

—————-

It was only one game, but it was a game that showed the world what it was like to have three of the greatest everyday players of all time, all in their primes, in one lineup, at the same time. Comb through baseball history and try to find a team that ever had three such players - you won’t. Secretariat may have moved “like a tremendous machine,” ...

Rays Tales: Fundamental change in pregame preparations | Tampa Bay Times

“It’s a reminder to keep doing what we’re doing effortwise but also using our heads at the same time,” Baldelli said. “We don’t have to challenge the defense every time.”

To reinforce that, he had a sign installed in the clubhouse that reads:

Run the bases hard, but take what the defense gives you.

Klapisch: What exactly is wrong with Steven Matz?

Ever since Steven Matz revealed he’s suffering from a strained flexor tendon, Mets officials have been privately asking who made the diagnosis. “Our [doctors] found nothing wrong,” said one person with knowledge of Matz’s care. The team is both frustrated and flummoxed, in the dark as to what’s actually wrong with Matz and when he’ll be able to pitch again.

It’s a sensitive subject among Mets executives, who say they like Matz personally and are convinced he’s talented enough to ...

Buster Olney: MLB Must Rewrite The Foreign-Substance Rule

Olney thinks MLB should do something before players get stuck together on a play at the plate:

The folks in uniform, as well as the reporters, could be rescued from this ridiculous dance if Major League Baseball and the players’ association would quickly rewrite the foreign-substance rule. The needed changes would relieve the players of the inevitable and silly accusations of cheating, something that Molina is wading through right now, by providing a cover of legitimacy to a common practice. And ...

Nine tweets show how historically awful Jeremy Guthrie’s start was Saturday

ormer Royals pitcher Jeremy Guthrie turned 38 on Saturday, and he was having a great day until the early evening.

Guthrie made a start for the Washington Nationals on Saturday, his first appearance in the majors since his days with the Royals in 2015. It should have been a happy day for him.

But it was a terrible outing for Guthrie, as the Phillies pounded him to the tune of 10 runs on six hits and four walks. He got just two outs. The Phillies ended up scoring 12 runs overall in the opening ...

Haudricourt: Rebuilding a team leads to roster roulette

“Inexperienced rosters are going to be more fluid,” said manager Craig Counsell, whose job is to put the puzzle back together every time the pieces change.

“There are challenges, certainly. The challenging thing is making roster decisions when it’s not always about performance. That’s because we have to manage 25 players (in the majors), 40 players (on the protected roster), options, bullpen availability, small injuries.

“It doesn’t always come down to performance. It comes down ...
