Angels - Acquired Romero

Los Angeles Angels - Acquired P J.C. Romero from the Minnesota Twins for IF Alexi Casilla

A lot has been made of this trade and how the Twins really dumped Romero, but I don’t really think it’s all that bad.  Romero’s a bit overrated, though he should beat his ZiPS, and the Twins can always use an extra infield prospect, even if Casilla’s big breakthrough season was only down in Cedar Rapids.  The Angels won’t miss Casilla since the organization is deep with infielders and has The OC signed long-term.  Romero will be missed by the Twins to a degree as they don’t have a large stable of lefty relievers.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see either Liriano or Perkins end up in the bullpen short-term as the rotation looks pretty full thanks to Scott Baker and the Twins’ puzzling affection for Kyle Lohse.

I put this one in the Brian Bucannon bin: the guy has to go, so dump him to an organization that he'd like to play for. When Buck went to SD we got back an A ball SS named Bartlett. This looks very similar once you get past the fact that JC still has talent and trade value. (That part confuses me a little.)

The Twins have said that Liriano would be in a rotation somewhere, so if it isn't in the bigs he'll be sent down (at least for a while) to get innings at Roch.

About Lohse, I said this somewhere else but I'll repeat it here: Radke never fixed his shoulder last summer. He rested it (again) instead of having the surgery thta would likely have given him a few years of play. He made a lot of noises about retiring after the current contract and skipping the operation was consitant with that. Terry Ryan would almost certainly prefer that Radke be healthy and both his kids pitch well in 06, but at least one of the three are likely to hit rough spots and Lohse is always good for 200 IP of average pitching. There's quite a bit of value in that if you're risk-averse.
