A’s - Signed Piazza, Embree

Oakland A’s - Signed P Alan Embree to a 2-year contract; signed C Mike Piazza to a 1-year contract.

The “C” before Piazza is just an honorary title as he’ll be the starting DH for the A’s in 2007.  The contract is reported to be somewhere between 8 and 9 million, so we’ll just call it $8.5 million.  The A’s have looked at several possibilities for a veteran one-year DH - they also were rumored to be negotiating with Floyd and Bonds.  I’d personally rather have Bonds, but he’s probably asking a lot more for a 1-year deal and Piazza’s probably going to hit better than Floyd.  Thumbs up here as the A’s don’t have an obviously preferable alternative.

It’s a bit harder to get excited with Alan Embree at $5.5 million (total, not per annum).  A this point of his career, Embree’s simply a generic LOOGY and I don’t think the A’s really need to be paying market value for that.  Embree did do a good job for the Padres, however, and the team will miss him because of their complete lack of lefty relievers.

I wonder how many A's pitchers have a better ZIPS projection than Embree? I'll guess 13.

Piazza's going to be awful disappointed when he finds out he's signing with Billy Beane, not Billy Bean.

The Embree signing is decidedly putrid. Feels like Rincon all over again, in terms of a LOOGY to be the fans' whipping boy.

While painful, that the funniest handle I've ever seen.

Those are some ugly projections, especially for Embree. I had no idea Piazza projected so low, though. .269/.342/.462 seems like something Dan Johnson ought to be able to produce.

273/365/469 actually. They could just put Swisher in the outfield, Johnson at 1st, and Piazza at DH - that could be the plan as Kielty looks like the current starting LF unless I forgot someone.

That is in fact the plan. Hopefully the Clown will play against LHP with Swisher moving to 1B. It seems likely.

This Embree signing is totally pointless. What can Embree do that Ron Flores can't?

I'd rather see Clown play RF against LHP, with Bradley moving to CF.

And, as discussed before, this means they'll likely lose 3 out of Saarloos, Casilla, Gaudin, Halsey, and Williams--who are all apparently out of options. Or, does Halsey have an option left?

way it is lined up, isn't Saarloos the fifth starter?
