Astros - Signed Martin

Houston Astros - Signed P Tom Martin to a minor-league contract and assigned him to Round Rock (AAA).

As bad as Martin was with the Braves to start the season, he’s still a left-handed reliever short of 40, so he’ll keep getting jobs for a while. Good organization to pick, too; some in Houston will still remember his out-of-nowhere success a decade ago, roasted toasted John Franco is the only lefty reliever on the team with Mike Gallo the only other one on the 40-man roster. Martin’s also probably a better pitcher than Phil Norton, the only other candidate that’s not a stretch.

I just wrote Richard Justice on his blog today about whether the Astros might be ready to give up on Franco. I guess this answers my second question, which was whether the Astros might consider bringing Tom Martin back to Houston.

Franco has been painfully bad this year, so they had to find some sort of backup plan, and I like Martin better than Gallo.

This year. They started a new franchise in Corpus Christi to be their AA.

This year - the Astros managed to do some switcherooenating, dumped New Orleans and got Round Rock AAA-ed. It's really hard to move classifications, but Nolan Ryan (who's one of the owners) has a lot of clout.

No. Well, if he gets added to the Astros major league roster, he'll be paid a pro-rated share of the major league minimum by the Astros, and that would be deducted from what the Braves owe him.

Wandy Rodriguez is pitching pretty well for AAA Round Rock, but I still think they look at him as more of a starter.

They need to just forget the shitty lefty ######## and call up Mike Burns.

tom martin had his one good season (his ONLY good season) for houston in 1997.

although a dead cat would be a better pitcher than franco.

to put it mildly.

WHY WHY WHY is Franco still given contracts outside of the Mets? When they gave up on him shouldnt this have been the end...and obvious to everyone?!?

just more evidence that if you're a LH pitcher and you're breathing, you can get a contract from someone.
