Boston Red Sox - Purchased Gonzalez

Boston Red Sox - Purchased the contract of P Jeremi Gonzalez; designated 1B Dave McCarty for assignment; signed 1B John Olerud to a minor-league contract.

Jeremi Gonzalez is probably the 2nd-best option as a fill-in starter (I’d prefer Abe Alvarez) and should be a bit above replacement level.  Don’t look for him to eat too many innings; Gonzalez has missed about half of the last decade due to arm problems and really needs to be on a short leash.

This has to be the 5th time McCarty has been DFAed by the Red Sox over the last few years.  He won’t get claimed and won’t ask for free agency; he’s simply in that Hansen/Magadan part of his career where he gets a few at-bats a year on his way to a coaching job.

Olerud should be the backup 1B in the not-too-distant future, which will send Kevin Youkilis down and keep Petagine in the minors when he’s healthy.

Was Gonzalez only up for last night's start? Does Miller take his slot now? I should pay attention to these things.

If he was just up for the one start, I like Gonzalez over Alvarez. Alvarez is probably the better pitcher, but the Tigers only have one lefty

Wow, what's the predicted line on Olerud? 190/300/320? Are they just sending Youk down to get more PT?

Really, does anybody think Olerud has anything left and, if so, is it better than what Youkilis has to contribute?

The fan part of me is excited to see Olerud in a Red Sox uniform; he's always been one of my favorite out of town players.

The analyst side of me looks at those numbers in #4 and wonders, "why did we pick up Olerud again?"

I couldn't understand why they were keeping McCarty in the first place. He's a lefty who for some reason bats righty and doesn't do so very well and he's an average fielder.

They should've just got rid of him in the beginning of the season and kept the Greek God of Walks. Youkilis has been raking since they brought him up.
