Braves - Signed Mike Ryan
Atlanta Braves - Signed OF Mike Ryan to a minor-league contract.
See how kind I am, making sure that I put Mike Ryan in the header so that people wouldn’t get fooled and think it was B.J.? It’s kind of penance for last year when the Cards traded Vlad Nunez and I put the transaction as “Cards - Acquired Vlad” and got a lot of mad e-mail plus a “Dan Szymborski is a Punk” entry over on the Get Up Baby! Cards blog. Not that I won’t do it again…
Michael Ryan is yet another one of the big Twins outfield surplus from a couple of years ago and though one of the lesser members of that group, he’s either a good 4th outfielder or an fill-in for a few weeks when your star goes down and your spare outfielder is Tony Womack. He’ll most likely play in Richmond until/unless injuries start popping up in the Brave outfield.

That said, I think it is needlessly generous to call Mike Ryan a "good 4th outfielder" at all. The Twins ultra-weak hitting middle infield had 6 (!) middle infielders hit better than Mike Ryan this year. Thank God for Bret Boone's ultra-crappy hitting, or that could have been 7. He's had a sub-.600 OPS over the past two years combined and his defense has never impressed me. I don't see what he could bring to the table on any MLB club.
