Brewers - Signed Abernathy, others
Milwaukee Brewers - Signed 2B Brent Abernathy, C Mark L. Johnson, C Mike Rivera, 2B Brian Dallimore, P Jerome Gamble, and P Jared Fernandez to minor-league contracts; released P Gary Glover
None of these signings will cause the Brewers to win the NL Central, but pretty much all these players can be useful role players if injuries hit the Brewers. Abernathy’s a perfectly suitable emergency 2B, Johnson and Rivera can back up for a few weeks without being too risky, Dallimore (and Rivera) can hit a little though neither is much defensively, and Gamble and Fernandez will happily fill any required role in AAA. Heck, as a knuckler, Fernandez has like 15 more opportunities to crack a major league pitching staff.

1. Der Komminsk-sar Posted: November 23, 2005 at 05:46 PM (#1743912)I suspect Gamble (who I like as a future long man) will repeat AA after his rough '05.
Who else besides Jared Fernandez throws a "hard knuckler" in the minors?
Lastly, in my third and last mention of this on this site, Glover was released to join the Giants in Japan.
And one with another guy (Bill Hall) who could handle the position if necessary. Heck, the Brewers had Warren Morris playing at Nashville last year, and he's not a lot different from Dallimore or Abernathy.
I'm sure that Dallimore (who can also play SS) and Abernathy are minor league filler/major league insurance in the event of an injury, in the fine tradition of Trent Durrington. Neither would embarrass you if you had to have them fill in for a week or two.
