Brewers - Traded Lee, Acquired Bell

Milwaukee Brewers - Traded OF Carlos Lee and OF Nelson Cruz to the Texas Rangers for OF Kevin Mench, P Francisco Cordero, and OF Laynce Nix; acquired IF David Bell from the Philadelphia Phillies for P Wilfredo Laureano.

Bell’s actually playing well again this season and while he’s a free agent, the Brewers have had a lot of infield injuries and Bell will be really useful at 3rd.  No complaints there.

My complaining is based on the Lee trade.  Lee’s one of the best bats available at the trade deadline and all the Brewers could get is a 4th outfielder, a soon-to-be free agent pitcher that’s fallen out of favor, and a centerfield non-entity?  Blecch.  By the same coin, this is a pretty nice trade for the Rangers as they get an impact bat in a very close pennant race and don’t give up anything they’ll ever miss.

Cordero does have an option for next year at $5 M so he doesn't have to be an FA. But I completely agree with the general analysis ... and you can add that Mench and Cordero cost nearly as much as Lee this season and, if they keep them both, will cost as much next year as they're paying Lee this year. Plus of course the Brewers had too many OF before the trade and have just as many OF after the trade.

There's reportedly another Cordero prospect going to the Brewers in this trade though, in the other threads, nobody seems to think much of him.

seems Melvin felt it would be an overpay to keep Lee
that a free market auction will over-appraise
