Cardinals - Signed Grudz

St. Louis Cardinals - Signed 2B Mark Grudzielanek to a 1-year contract worth $1 million.

Grudz also gets another 500k in performance incentives.  Based on what’s left, this is a good deal for the Cubs.  A poor defensive shortstop, Grudzielanek became a decent-to-good defensive player upon being moved to 2nd a few years ago and is a contributor in that role.  They’re still messing around with Roberto Alomar for some strange reason, so it remains to be seen if Grudz is a starter, in a platoon in which he will be the one not whining, or watching a done 2B play while he is the 5th infielder.

He won't do what Womack did in '04, but he'll be a decent 2B.

If you can't get the Cubs... you know, the Chicago Cubs, with Dusty Baker as your manager, to keep you when you are getting on in age and you hit .307 last year (never mind the 96 OPS+), that is a bad sign.

Of course, if Dusty is still managing the North Siders in about 3 years, Grudz will be back.

He won't match Womack's 2004, but i think there's a decent shot that 2005 Grudz is better than 2005 womack.

and at half the price too.

If you can't get the Cubs...

I'd guess Todd Walker may have played a role in decision-making, both for Grudz and for the Cubs. Besides, with a name like Grudzielanek, you know he'll wilt under the hot Wrigley sun.

Nitpick police: You mean Cardinals, unless you mean that the loss of Grudz is a good deal for the Cubs, which is arguably true as well.

I'M GUESSING THAT TONY WILL PLATOON!!!

GRUDZ CRUSHES RIGHTIES, WHICH IS NICE IN THE NL CENTRAL!!!

ALOMAR OR SOMEONE ELSE WILL GET AB'S VS. LEFTIES!!!

WHY DUSTY GAVE GRUDZ 80 AB'S VS. LEFTIES LAST YEAR IS BEYOND ME!!!

Well, Grudz crushed righties last year, but over the last three years has a slightly better OPS against lefties.

Over the past three years Alomar's hit 208/264/308 against lefties. It's only 351 at-bats, but I wouldn't want to be part of the team that gave him his full statistical chance to prove he can't hit lefties.

This really isn't a bad signing for the price. It's not like the Cardinals need more offense, and someone has to hit 8th in the order.

If he hits .300, you'll be happy. If he hits .260, I'll be happy. If I were a betting man, I put him closer to .260. After all, Dusty's not around to help drag odd production out of pointless veterans in St. Louis.

I COULDN'T CARE LESS WHAT HE HITS, I ONLY CARE ABOUT HIS OBP- AND IF IT HOVERS NEAR .340, WHOPEEE!!!!!

Eckstein?

The Cards lineup is interesting. 4 guys well above league average (Walker, Edmonds, Rolen, Pujols), one guy probably (hopefully) near league average (Sanders), and then Molina, Grudz and Eckstein. Feast or famine. Eckstein is below average and Grudz is probably also. Molina could be average I guess -- he should be better than Matheny.

Now that I look at it, OBP-wise, it could be better than last year. That's pretty cool.

Considering the Cardinals had no middle infielders once Renteria and Womack left, it's very likely they'll still sign Alomar and get playing time for Eckstein, Alomar and Grudz all three at 2B/SS....
