Transaction Oracle— A Timely Look at Transactions as They Happen

Cardinals - Signed LaRue
St. Louis Cardinals - Signed C Jason LaRue to a 1-year, $850,000 contract.
Well, on the plus side, this is really just twice minimum wage. LaRue takes over Gary Bennett’s spot as “Backup catcher who can’t hit and is thought of as being good defensively mainly because he can’t hit.” When LaRue could hit, I don’t think I ever heard any Reds fans talking about his defense or his leadership as being awesome but now that he couldn’t hit the ground if he fell off his truck, teams now think he brings solid defense and leadership to their teams. Yady, if you look like you’re in the way of a collision at the plate, step out of the way for the good of the team. Unless it’s game 7 of the World Series, which I don’t think the Cards will see next year.

LaRue had a legitimately great throwing arm, which is still good, and the Cardinals seem to want their catchers to be a bit of a red ass. Not many teams would go out to acquire the backup catcher who instigated a fight with their franchise player like the Cardinals did.
LaRue throws well and he occasionally deposits a pitch deep in the stands. That's two more skills than Gary Bennett showed, so this counts as an upgrade.
