Transaction Oracle — A Timely Look at Transactions as They Happen Tuesday, August 31, 2010Contract of…WIN?!Washington Nationals - Signed P Livan Hernandez to a 1-year, $1 million contract.
Last week, I asked my Twitter followers (I’m @DSzymborski, which I constantly forget to mention publicly) which team would sign Livan Hernandez to a terrible contract this offseason. But, as it turns out, Livan not only didn’t hit free agency, but actually signed a good contract, only a roughly $100K a year raise. Generally, you mix Livan Hernandez and a pitcher with a 3.49 ERA and a terrible K rate and you get something wacky. But this is a good signing at the price, hence the attempted interrobang. Incentives can take the deal higher, but if Livan pitches like he did in 2009. And 2008. And 2007. And 2006, then the Nats won’t have a problem letting him go next year.
Thankfully, those who like snark still have the possibility of Jeff Francoeur being on the free-agent market this offseason. Hopefully something to do with Kansas City - I have experience drawing Dayton Moore.

1. Johnny Sycophant-Laden Fora Posted: August 31, 2010 at 07:41 PM (#3631036)His HR/9 rate is a career best 0.6
In 2008 he allowed opponents to hit .342/.375/.520 against him with 53 doubles, 3 triples and 25 homers in 811 PAs
in 2009 he allowed opponents to hit .308/.363/.470 against him with 47 doubles, 6 triples and 19 homers in 806 APs
now in 2010, batters have hit .265/.320/.380 against him with with 34 doubles, 3 triples and 12 homers in 741 PAs
basically it looks like batters simply are not making good contact against him, but then again, since 6/1 he looks a lot like the 2007-2009 Livan...
So after a good year where he's quite obviously fortunate to have the record he has, he's getting the kind of contract that replacement level inning eaters get. Certainly speaks well of the smarts in the Nationals front office, and for the rest of baseball since he probably doesn't think he could get much more from another team.
