Cubs - Acquired Pierre
Chicago Cubs - Acquired CF Juan Pierre from the Florida Marlins for P Renyel Pinto, P Ricky Nolasco, and P Sergio Mitre.
Pierre is a good leadoff hitter, though his impact and his defense are both typically overrated. He’s not a very good defensive player and his arm is pretty bad, but he will give the Cubs the tablesetter they want. Lee might have ended up with the MVP Award if Pierre had been hitting in front of him instead of the actual goofs that did.
The Cubs aren’t giving up any grade-A prospects here, but when you give away 3 young arms with potential, especially Pinto and Nolasco, there’s a pretty good chance someone will come back to haunt you later. It’ll be quite fun to see the Marlins sort out their arms the next few years, even if they’re doing this rebuilding for ulterior motives.

1. Hendry's Wad of Cash (UCCF) Posted: December 08, 2005 at 03:54 PM (#1767425)I think that's about as optimistic for Pierre as I could be. He's also telling us in the paper today that he's underrated by traditional statistics and does a lot of things that don't show up in the box score. I assume that's a reference to his lousy arm.
The Cubs will work with him on that in ST, though. Lots of guys have lousy arms - to play in the Cub OF, you have to both have a lousy arm *and* forget everything you know about the concept of the cutoff man. If your throws aren't 10 feet over his head and 30 feet wide of the base you were (theoretically) trying to throw it to, then you're not doing your job.
The Marlins are just loaded on young arms now. Good trade for them...
Hendry... he's becoming worse by the day.
